Back To Mine with Kerbcrawler

Sexopolis

Growing up the son a preacher and a travelling motown singer I was surrounded by music from as far as I can remember. The house was constantly filled with all the classics from The Four Tops, Marvin gaye, The Supremes et al. This is a space I always go back to for the obvious sake of nostalgia but also from a music production aesthetic the purity of desire that pours out from this era of music is one that sadly I never see being repeated. When I do dig back into the crates I am drawn to the experimental B sides where the artists could really let themselves freak out – Take sexopolis for example it just oozes naughtiness and just build and builds towards an almighty climax!
Tittilating!

Gwen Guthrie – It Should Have Been You

House before house. Techno before techno. Sometimes to go forward you have to go backwards. There is a multitude of contemporary artists that I would urge to put this track on repeat and just take inspiration from the opulence you can achieve by doing very little. Simple loop, simple lyrics, simple vibe. Seminal track.
Holla!

Cameo – Single Life

Admittedly – a guilty pleasure of mine but what can I say, I’m a child of the 80s. If this track doesn’t make you want to discard your clothes and drive through a McDonalds drive thru with the roof down wearing nothing but a pair of black leather gloves I don’t know what will!
No? OK just me then…
Wreck yourself.

Sex – O – Sonique

The track that led me down into the sweat filled basements of Northern England for over twenty years and counting. House music in its purest unadulterated form. It just wants to glide you from ice queen to dirty skank in the shortest time possible. And in my experience works every time!
Positively hostile!

Sex-O-Sonique - I Thought It Was You (12 Inch Mix)

Utah Saints – Lost Vagueness

Like all self respecting clubbers who lived through the noughties I had a lengthy stint reaching for the lasers in the North of England’s dark and dusty warehouses. Most of it is a hazy blur but there is always one track that I slap on the old 1210s to take me straight back to those halcyon days.
Pwoper Nawty.

Rubber Johnny – Aphex Twin / Chris Cunningham

I mean come on. What self respecting playlist would be complete without Aphex Twin.
Mind bending.

Well I could sit and discuss music with you fine folk all day but Ive got pimps to check and hoes to holla. Go wreck yourself. One more tune you say? Ok, go on then…

Dream Koala – Odyssey

Not even gonna say anything. Just watch. And listen.

Kerbcrawler – No Exit EP (ReBoot Black)

The ReBoot Prague label is a new arrival on the underground scene in Czech Repubulic. It operates two outlets, White and Black, with the former focused on minimal and melodic material and the latter heading down a much more stern techno path. Here comes the first such offering from ReBoot Black, and it is by Kerbcrawler with a remix by Sy Chan.
Kerbcrawler is a fledgling artist who impresses on this, his debut. First up is ‘Exit’, a rock solid, rib rattling track with well programmed drums that have real force in them. Elastic synths flip about to bring some dynamics to the visceral drive and spooky synths unravel later on for some head spinning moments.
The equally brillaint and muscular ‘Berlin’ is again cut from rock, but has frazzled, electrified dub chords rattling out from the centre and adding real breadth and depth to the kicks. Percussive patterns cut up the groove and are sharp and crisp, overall making for a real headline making track.
Remixing is Sy Chan, a Manchester artist who hosts the Sankeys Radio Show and has gained early support from artists such as Marco Carola & Luciano. His unique take on the track is turbocharged and raved up, with lively stabs, scurrying effects and rolling snares all adding up to one hell of a techno offering.
The last standout original is ‘Rage,’ an atmospheric and heady affair that keeps you on your toes as far off industrial sounds, clever filter usage and woody hits all demand you dance.
