Back To Mine with Afterlife

1. Herbie Hancock – Butterfly

I grew up listening to mostly jazz, dub and psychedelia and this is a masterpiece of all three. Herbie was one of the first jazz artists to embrace synths and of course the Fender Rhodes which he loved so much he made a little floppy vinyl demo record of the Rhodes sound which I still treasure.

2. Mama Oliver – Eastwest (stoned together) (Kruder & Dorfmeister Mix)

The lyrics eloquently affirm my attitude to life and the groove is sublime. Any track from the K&D sessions album would work here but this is pure gold.

3. The Doors – Riders On The Storm (Ibizarre Revival Remix)

I was working with Lenny at his studio in Ibiza years ago when he played me this which was work in progress at the time. He had been given the entire recording session to work with and listening to the outtakes and Jim Morrison fooling around in the studio was spine tingling. Lenny sprinkled some balearic fairy dust and lovingly enhanced the original.

4. Napoleon – Moogie Wonderland

Simon Mills aka Napoleon is one half of Bent and I love the attention to detail in the bass programming, forever changing. Best record of 2015 for me for sure and prompted me to buy a moog and get to work.

5. Sonic Jesus – Lost Reprise

So… I’m listening to Moogie Wonderland on the you tube link above whilst writing about it for this article. The track finishes and then this starts and I’m lost for words by just how beautiful it is. This is what they say: Sonic Jesus is a neo-psychedelic band from Doganella di Ninfa,Italy. It’s Velvet Underground, raped by Spacemen 3, dressed in neo-psychedelia, folk imprinted and shoegaze nuances. Yes it is and the video is amazing too. I just bought the album on CD.

6. Tennyson – Fault Line

Tennyson, a super talented brother and sister duo from Canada I discovered last year that blow me away with their playful yet musically very mature compositions. Genre destruction at its finest.

7. Jakatta – Strung Out

Recorded at Air Lyndhurst this is a 10 minute reprise of the whole Visions album. The string arrangement is exquisite, full of emotion. A modern classic .

8. Frank Zappa – Peaches en Regalia

Recorded on a 16 track tape machine somewhere in Los Angeles around 1969.

9. DF Tram – Nightcrawler

This is a project I loved working on and released on my Subatomic UK label last year as part of the DF Tram album Illegal Lingo. He’s also a brilliantly gifted DJ.

10. Coppe – Swan Song

I met Coppe working on the DF Tram album, she’s an electronic performance artist from Mars who releases on her own label Mango + Sweetrice records and grew up in Japan and Hawaii. Always innovating, eternally fresh.

AfterLife-cover-art-1000x1000Afterlife – Ten Thousand Things (Subatomic UK)

The Subatomic UK label releases a brand new album from acclaimed chillout DJ and producer Afterlife aka Steve Miller. The 11 track affair comes on CD as well as digital and is another absorbing full length trip into Balearic chillout. This is Miller’s ninth album as Afterlife in a career that has spanned over 20 years and seen the producer releasing on imprints such as Defected, Hed Kandi & Urban Torque. His drive for a continuing evolution of the chillout genre has seen him experiment with an eclectic mix of styles and collaborate with artists such as Jose Padilla, Roger Sanchez & K-Klass. A real champion of romantic moods and laid back grooves, Miller’s latest album is already picking up plenty of Radio and DJ support from the likes of Rob Da Bank and Chris Coco, John Sa Trinxa, Pete Gooding and Kiss FM. Often called upon to compile classy chill out albums, Miller also runs his own acclaimed label, and this latest album finds him right on the money once more. The title track sets a cinematic mood with delicate glass tinkles and supple grooves lapping at your feet. Cuts like the exquisite ‘Tonto’ marry shimmering and Balearic guitars with loose, live drums and have you dreaming of the sun. The majestic ‘Monkey Butter’ is a more upbeat number, with squelchy synth sounds and radiant chords bringing the party, ‘La Torre’ drops back into a horizontal haze with lush keys and organic percussion lulling you into a day dream, and ‘Tuvan’ is a super slo mo broken beat affair with echoing vocal sounds and intricate little melodic hooks making for stoner vibes extraordinaire. Whispered vocals on ‘Sunburn’ are joined by soft edged drums that sway as gently as a warm breeze, and the album then continues to undulate through long legged and beachy disco, churning electronic trip hop and blissed out grooves that have no edges. This is a masterfully musical collection of moods and grooves designed to slow busy minds and sooth bothered souls, and is a another triumphant project from both Miller and Subatomic UK.
