Back To Mine with Hardsoul

Moloko – Never Enough

Although house music is my life, I rarely play this music in my house or car. Every best-of list I will ever make has to have at least one song by the genius that is Roisin Murphy. She somehow always seems to hit my emotional button. The melody, those lyrics, and the strings to top it off. This is pure bliss to me.

Sohn – The Wheel

When I first heard this song it totally blew me away. I am always searching for that song that has the right balance between songwriting and innovative production. This song has it all, a haunting melody line, great lyrics and an insane production.

James Blake – Retrograde

Without a doubt my favourite song of the last couple of years. Had this on repeat a million times and still gives me chills when that big synth comes in.

Sam Sparro – Black & Gold

Another big song that is on my iPod (yes kids, I have an old skool iPod, I am so retro I want to OWN my songs, ha!). As someone who is filling his days with making music you can only hope to someday write a big chorus like that!

Basement Jaxx – Red Alert

OK, it’s time for a bit of dance music now. Basement Jaxx have been very inspirational to me for their ability to make songs that work on a dancefloor. Producing wise it’s one of the hardest things to do, finding the right formula for all the elements that make up the track. The kick, the bass, the vocals, they all need their own little space.

Kot – Finally

I always refer to this track when people criticise house music for being fluffy and lacking substance. The lyrics of this song are so profound and deep, and that melody so haunting… it really doesn’t get much better than this.

Octave One – Blackwater (Full Strings Mix)

Talking about a classic track, I love this one. The live strings give it that timeless quality.

Everything But The Girl – Missing (Todd Terry remix)

What can I say about this man? He almost single-handedly invented the sound that would define my life for the last 25 years. The amount of classic house this guy made in the early 90s is insane, and they still hold up today, being rediscovered and appreciated by a whole new generation of DJs and clubbers. For me to get to work with him regularly and release music with him is something I can barely comprehend.

Prince – Erotic City

I cannot deliver a top 10 without this man. The most complete musician, singer, songwriter and producer to ever grace the face of this earth. I could have named 50 titles that I think are equally good as this one. But today I opt for this little gem that nearly bankrupted me back in 1984 when I had to buy the vinyl as an American Import.

M11TH – CONNECTED

A sneaky side project we did with Holland’s most talented singer-songwriter, Alain Clark. We have an album full of material, such a shame it never got released!
