Back To Mine with Race Banyon

Race Banyon and Dj Dahi at Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica CA, USA on 22 October, 2015.

New Zealand based producer Race Banyon’s (aka Eddie Johnston) new single ‘Move With Us’, is the first to lifted from an upcoming EP set for release in November. Driving dance-oriented electronic percussion is elegantly complimented by soft synth pads, sparse vocal samples and delicate string sections – leading to a cathartic crescendo of thudding electronics towards its finale.

1. Usher – What Happened To U

I got pretty heavy into R&B around 2012/13. I guess as the lines between pop/r&b/rap were blurring and it became accessible to me. This is produced by 40, Drake’s producer. If I could only listen to music that he produced for the rest of my life, I’d be OK.

2. Room 5 – Think About U

House music is too good, we don’t deserve it. In that We Are Your Friends movie, Zac Efron gives a big speech about the DJ locking into the audiences heart rate. It’s a terrible movie, but if I’m emotional enough I believe it.

3. Phoenix – Lovelife

I love Phoenix with all my heart. Their songs are always sweet but there is a melancholiness to them. There’s a sense of longing, maybe. It just feels so great and so fresh.

4. Siouxsie & the Banshees – Spellbound (Extended ’12 Version)

I’m a child and I can’t really get my head around why they made all these extended club versions of songs back then. Stick a few extra minutes of drums at the end. It’s a lot of fun, we should bring it back.

5. Crackazat – Somewhere Else

Seeing The Black Madonna was one of my highlights of the last few years I’ve spent overseas. This song blew my mind on the night.

6. Araabmuzik – Lost In A Maze

I’ll push this album onto anyone who’ll listen. It’s like nothing I’ve ever heard before. It’s not mixed properly and there are only low bitrate MP3s around.

7. U2 – Mofo

Completely insane.

8. Burial & Four Tet – Moth

This is the best song of all time as far as I’m concerned. It’s mysterious and haunting in a way that no other music has made me feel.

9. Bria Jhane – Over You

Some songs feel so huge they just paralyse you. This is one of those songs. Let me turn the lights off and close my eyes a little.

10. Jonsi & Alex – Indian Summer

Time to sleep.
