Back To Mine with Rennie Foster

When it comes to producer’s whose musical minds we’re interested in hearing more about, they don’t come much more qualified than Canadian DJ, artist and label owner extrordinaire, Rennie Foster. The RF music boss has been releasing high quality house and techno for some time now. An exporter of always interesting music, Foster is a producer who’s neither afraid to break with convention or take risks in his sound. This is apparent recently of his Crowdfunded LP, ‘Game of 100 Ghosts’, which has already won plaudits aplenty from vast sections of media thanks to its dedication to the unusual, its striking artwork and a staunch refusal to compromise that’s always a hallmark of Rennie’s work. We checked in with Rennie recently, as he talked us through some of his favourite after-party weapons. As we anticipated, they’re a diverse bunch…

OMD – Silent Running

One of my long time favourite bands is Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark. I’ve seen them live a couple times and even now they are making great stuff. I love the album Dazzle Ships especially for chilling. Silent Running is a beautiful song similar to Joy Division’s Atmosphere, but all the way OMD.

The Passenger – Flashed Through

I have released some heavy jams by Vancouver artist Jesse Creed aka The Passenger on my RF label, however this track is from his self released vinyl album titled \_|. The whole album is genius level work in my opinion and created at his studio full of salvaged vintage gear. This album is often on in the living room of our house on the record player.

Sun Electric – Entrance (Dave Angel Remix)

The master Dave Angel at work. I love this remix and the song. A piece of dance music that I have been listening to for years and come back to again and again. Really captures something unique here, a futuristic combo of timeless elements done perfectly. A masterpiece of hi-tech soul.

Rennie Foster – Floatilla

Yes, I play my own music at my house and why not? Haha. This track came out earlier this year on Jack White’s Third Man Pressing label as part of a collar with Transmat, a really beautiful clear vinyl 45. It’s also been released as an EP on the German label Ornaments, beautiful swirled vinyl, and appears on my new album Game of 100 Ghosts. So vinyl or on CD it’s bound to get heard on the home stereo.

Killah Priest – Quantum Spirit of Creation

I listen to a lot of Hip Hop at home and with my friends. This is a jam that has gotten a lot of play during hang out time. Get into the track, into the lyrics. I don’t have a lot of words to go with this, just listen. Respect and love going out to my man Degree One.

Keith Worthy – Jazz

This is a jam I often play out at clubs and parties, but it gets heavy rotation home listening too as it’s on Keith Worthy’s essential LP The Price Of Nonconformance. Keith is one of many dope artists coming from the real underground scene of Detroit.

Moka Only – Where We Should Be

I’ve been doing music with Moka Only since we both started and even though our paths veered in somewhat different directions, you would be surprised how they have remained our original visions as well. I am so proud of this cat and the way he does music and life. A legend in the Hip Hop worldwide underground and a true artist.

Rennie Foster feat. Moka Only – Do It Like Hip Hop (RF Future Touch)

The original version of this track is on the Game of 100 Ghosts CD and also a 45” vinyl from Vancouver label MSLX. Often gets some play on the living room record player. Moka Only and I have made a couple of serious Hip House jams. The Samuel L Session remix of our 2011 cut “Connect Like Four” did really well on Italian house label Rebirth Records. We are working on a new one now of course!

Julian Marley – Boom Draw

It’s no secret that I like weed and smoke it a lot. It’s what works for me and I am all about it. This jam is often bumped when I am smoking with homies, especially this past year at the studio. Shouts going out to the homies Ben Chibber at Monke, Orlando Voorn aka Fix, Desmond Hoostie, and Geoff Dermer at Kitsch Skateboards, Vancouver BC!

Rennie Foster – Bohemian Groove

Since the Game of 100 Ghosts album just dropped, of course the CD is getting played at my house if we are partying at my place. I’ll send you home with a copy too. Listen to it in the car on the way home but be careful, don’t get so caught up in it that you crash, and don’t drink and drive. You can crash on the couch if you want.
