Back to Mine with X Gets the Crest

Back to Mine with X Gets the Crest

After hours grooving…

Gil Scott-Heron – Lady Day And John Coltrane
My favourite track, off my favourite album, by one of my favourite artists. I got the chance to see him perform before he passed away in 2011 and he was amazing.

Nohelani Cypriano – Lihue
Such a dreamy and soulful track. It feels so unique and there’s not a lot of Hawaiian, Disco, Soul out there. I also love the video, with the cheesy soap opera style filter and flamingos!

Fatima w/ Floating Points – Mind
The whole EP is great but this one stands out for me. It has a great old school feel to it and Fatima is so underrated.

Jadakiss – By your side
I was about 11 when I first really getting into music and I wouldn’t listen to anything that wasn’t rap. I had this on repeat when I first started making music and loved how the sample is flipped.

Mos Def – Umi Says
I remember listening to ‘Miss Fat Booty Part 2’ (the first single on ‘Black on Both Sides’) and rushing out to grab the album. When I heard ‘Umi Says’ I was blown away. The production is beautiful the the lyrics are so powerful.

Marta Acuna – Dance, Dance, Dance?
One of my favourite rare disco songs (wish I had it on vinyl). It’s produced by disco legend Patrick Adams and Marta Acuna’s hazy vocals are the perfect complement.??

Ahmed Fakroun – Nisyan?
I had a gig where they wanted North African music and this was one of the gems I managed to unearth. It has a really nice slowed disco sound to it and Ahmed has one hell of a mullet.

Chromatics – Running Up The Hill
Off the album ‘Night Drive’. It’s a great concept album, basically the ‘Drive Soundtrack’ before the ‘Drive Soundtrack’ was ever a thing. This particular track is a brilliant cover of Kate Bush.

Eddie Kendricks – Girl You Need a Change of Mind
I used to work in a clothing store on Regent Street and had a friend there who lived through the golden age of Disco and Soul. We used to make mixtapes for each other and this was one of the tracks he introduced me to. It’s an absolute banger and has one of the best breakdowns ever!

Innerzone Orchestra – People Make The World Go ‘Round (J88 Remix)
I grew up in a small town called Marlow. When I was 15/16 I would pop into my local record store and spend hours listening to new music. One day the owner recommended buying a compilation called ‘Detroit Soul’. It was the first time I heard artists like Dilla, Platinum Pied Pipers and Dwele. The album was so influential to me and if I had to pick one track off it, it would be this one. Tip: just wait for the beat to come in.

X Gets the Crest – Osita/Never You Change (Delve Deeper Recordings)
Sheffield label and party Delver Deeper proves 13 needn’t be unlucky with a standout new EP from fast rising star X Gets The Crest. The tidy two track package follows on from jams by artists like Jay Tripwire, Brett Johnson and Groove Assassin and continues to mark the Northern label as an essential modern outlet.
X Gets The Crest is George Hilton, a producer from London who has impressed with releases on Audaz and remixes of Phasen that picked up support from the likes of Bondax. He has a wide remit that touches on genuinely different styles of dance, and this new EP is evidence of that. The brilliant ‘Osita’ has an infectious swagger to it that is naughty and nasty. Bumping drums and Afro rhythms percolate under big bass notes and ad libbed vocals. It’s a party starting house tune for dancefloor destruction. The other fresh original here is ‘You Never Change,’ a completely different type of track, but one that is just as impactful. This one is a smoochy and romantic deep house roller with vibing mid tempo drums that make you want to loosen your limbs. Colourful perc, steamy vox and woody xylophone all add charm and authentic funk to the beat and round out a devastating package that excels in two very different ways.
