Grinding out the late night grooves…
Classic early 80’s disco/soul. Shep Pettibone is such a tight producer, gets a seriously polished sound. I love his Level 42 “World Machine remix” too. He took me on a fishing trip round Malibu on his 6 berther, had a really nice time.
Eurythmics “See No Evil”
This on the flip side to “King and Queen of America”. Brilliant song, quite smacky. Dave Stewart is wicked. I think he might’ve done this around the time he was wearing those mad headphones with aerials on. He looks a bit like Ringo Starr now.
Savage “Don’t Cry Tonight”
Everything about this is kinky. So simple – childlike plinky plonky keys, Simmonds Drums, Jupiter 8, Emulator, Poly-61. Occasionally Italian’s can do it better, boom boom.
Mr Fingers “Dead End Alley”
Got to have Larry Heard on a Back To Mine compilation. Didn’t he used to be a postman? He’s retired from making music about about 5 times too. This is off the Introduction LP with a great Robert Owens vocal. Deep for late night clubbing.
Carl Craig “At Les”
Goose bumps, hairs on end Detroit business from one of the masters. There’s so many sub genres now, this could be future science fiction jazz. Taken from the “More Songs About Food And Revolutionary Art” LP.
Laid Back “Bakerman”
The video to this is so cool with them all jumping out of the plane. Wacky flippin Danes! This and White Horse are proper classics.
Steely Dan “Glamour Profession”
There’s nothing I love more after a hard day’s work than slipping on my deck shoes, pouring a drink and vibing out to some yacht rock. This is on Gaucho and the production on it is incredible. Apparently they were mad perfectionists in the studio and this is slick as.
The Meditations “We Gonna Make It”
I Love reggae and the album this is on, “I Love Jah” is wicked, nuff said.
Glenn Underground “There Is A Time”
Super deep, Chicago house from Glenn. The production sound he gets is so good. This is really throbbing bible business. Takes me back to when I was at college and we used to cane this. My version is worn to fuck. If you like house music, but you don’t love this, you should give up.
Tullio De Piscopo “Primavera (Stop Bajon)”
Balearic Classic! No idea what they’re going on about, but this tune’s amazing. The whole arrangement is brilliant – the horns especially do it for me.
youngTEE – Grindr (inc. Joe Goddard & South Soul Project remixes) (Southern Fried Records)
Cheeky edit man, sample freak and sure fire party starter youngTEE is back with another playful and powerful missive on Southern Fried, and once again he gets some amazing remix treatment, this time from Joe Goddard of Hot Chip fame. South Soul Project also turns in a remix on this superb four track package.
youngTEE – Grindr (inc. Joe Goddard & South Soul Project remixes) on Southern Fried Records is out 7th Feb 2014…
First up is the tongue in cheek ‘Grindr’, which features deep house beats, jazzy chords and some spritely electronics, but the main hook is the breathy vocal line that muses on the track’s title (an app for finding gay and bi curious people near you). New London collective South Soul Project flip the track into a much more writhing and urban sounding affair with solid kicks, face melting synth screws and hiccupping, funky drums. The other original is ‘The Way You Kiss’, an ebullient bit of rave influenced house music with nervy synth stabs, chopped and sliced female vocals and plenty of dirty guitar riffs all muddled together into one perpetually tense bit of main room action. It’s dynamic and colourful and is always on the move. Joe Goddard steps up to remix ‘The Way You Kiss’, creating what will surely be one of the year’s early club smashes as a result. His flailing house rework features plenty of bendy and colourful tones, neon chords and skipping garage percussion. It’s clean and crisp, anthemic and propulsive in equal measure and really sets this package alight.
youngTEE never misses, so when paired with remixes of the quality of Joe Goddard you know you have another essential release on your hands…
