After a highly productive year in 2020, due in part to his breakout single ‘Dance’, AIR APPARENT returns with his first single of 2021, ‘Bad For Me’. Featuring vocals from GESS, ‘Bad For Me’ is an effervescent future-pop affair imbued with modern indie sensibilities, written in mind for everyone who has been told they’d be better off without someone they hold close.
You just released your new single “Bad For Me” with some very evocative lyricism. What inspired the theme of the single?
This song was about a relationship that a lot of people I know have experienced, and me and my songwriter tapped into the emotions of being in a relationship with someone or something that can consume you (and you willingly let it). For me, it was less about a person and more about my relationship with music, which can be complicated sometimes.
What about GESS drew you to collaborating with him?
I was drawn to GESS because of his amazing taste, vocal performance, vibe, and overall how honest his songs always feel!
What was the creative process like with GESS?
GESS and I basically just went back and forth on the topline virtually. It was super smooth and collaborative!
What has the last year of lockdown taught you (about your music or about yourself)?
Music was a stabilizing force for me in the lockdown, but I also realized that being away from people makes it hard to feel as inspired. As lockdown ramps down, I’m excited to spend more time writing with people in person again!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received in regards to your music career?
I feel like a handful of other writers, musicians, friends, and family have told me this and it always remains true – make music that is uniquely you rather than trying to chase any sort of trend or inspiration.
Which of your releases are you the most proud of?
I think “Bad For Me (ft. GESS)” and “Dance” are both songs I’m really proud of because of how much writing I got to do on both the topline and production pieces. They also groove in a way I’m super happy with, and is something I want to continue to integrate into my music.
Your music clearly draws from a variety of genres and styles, are there any artists you’re particularly inspired by?
Lately, I’ve been really inspired by demotapes, Remi Wolf, Moore Kismet, and Arlo Parks! All different genres, all good stuff.
Outside of music, where do you find inspiration?
I look for inspiration in small moments throughout the day: a sliver of sunlight falling into my room a certain way, the first bite of an incredibly fresh and flaky croissant, a conversation with a friend, the feeling of dread on a Sunday night. I think inspiration is everywhere, but the difference in what is easy to create from depends on how easily I can tap into the way those small moments make me feel!
When did you first decide to make music professionally? Was there a particular moment or instance when you knew you could make it?
I started making music seriously in 2016. I don’t know if there was a particular moment, but I remember listening to my music and thinking “wow, I actually really like this track” and thought it would be worthwhile to share!
This marks your first release of 2021, what else do you have in store this year?
I’m hoping to release my first album this year!
