Lucas Alexander

Today we are pleased to welcome our next guest, Lucas Alexander, a fast-rising artist out of the UK who’s currently on the verge of a milestone year. Having just dropped his second outing on Darius Syrossian’s Moxy Muzik in time for the summer, we thought it would be the perfect moment to have a chat with Lucas. Enjoy!

Lucas, nice to meet you… How are things with you and whereabouts are you chatting to us from right now?

Always good thank you. I’m on my way to London, hoping to sign a few records to one of my favourite labels. The perfect time to get stuck into some questions.

A UK based artist, can you tell us a bit about where you grew up and what the music scene is like there?

I grew up in Cardiff, Wales, the greatest country on earth… just ask any Welsh person.

Wales isn’t the biggest of countries so the electronic music scene isn’t huge but what we lack in numbers we make up for in passion.

You’ve been picking up some real traction with releases on the likes of HE.SHE.THEY., META and most recently, on Darius Syrossian’s Moxy Muzik; can you tell us a bit about that one?

Yes, my La Di Da EP. It’s had such a good response and I’m loving seeing some of my favourite artists play it at amazing parties all over the world! I also don’t think hearing my music on Radio 1 and Kiss FM will ever not blow my mind.

That’s great to hear. It’s a super strong release, congrats! What was it like working with Pablo:Rita on La Di Da?

Thank you, I really appreciate it. I can’t believe how quickly it all came together. I’d had the beat for a while and tried a few vocalists but nothing really clicked. I heard Liz’s vocal on ‘Less Ordinary’ by Jansons and as soon as I heard her voice I knew that was exactly what ‘La Di Da’ needed. I dropped her a message and it wasn’t long before she hit me back with a few different takes, a few chops and fx later… We had the finished product you hear today. Some things are just meant to be and Pablo:Rita’s vocals on this track is one of them, thank you both.

La Di Da marks your second outing on Moxy Muzik, the label seems to have taken a liking to your productions early on. Can you tell us about how you and the label first linked up and the impact it’s had on you so far?

I met Darius Syrossian many moons ago when he came to Cardiff to play b2b with Hector Couto at one of the cities best ever underground clubs Aura (RIP). He’s always been one of my favourite artists from ‘My Side Project’ back then through to ‘Soul Fire’ now, straight up House Music! We became friends through our love and passion for music, showing each other various tracks at Ibiza after parties and it just makes sense for Moxy Muzik to be the first label to push my sound out to the world.

Looking ahead, we hear you have another EP on the way soon that features a special remix from a UK artist. What can you tell us about that one?…

Yes I’m so excited about this! My ‘FM Dial EP’ drops on Richy Ahmed’s Four Thirty Two imprint May 20th. The lead track FM Dial pays homage to pirate radio, so I had to get Seb Zito on remix duties. ‘Itchy Feet’ features a few catchy bars from one of Wales’ best MCs, Fernquest. An’ last but not least, ‘Move It’, I made this one with Joey Rich & Harrie Summers, the perfect track for summer.

With clubbing finding some level of normality again, how has it been returning to gigs? Are there any that have stood out for you recently?

So so sooo good! DJing was my first love and something I’ve always done. Not being able to play for so long made me really concentrate on producing, which worked out well. BUT, the feeling when playing those productions to big crowds can’t be replaced. Playing Trick at Cardiff Castle will forever be the highlight of my career. A castle in the centre of the Welsh capital, with all my family and friends in the crowd will never be beaten. I’d dreamt of playing in the castle from before they allowed music events, it’s the most iconic place in the country.

Where can our readers expect to see you over the coming months?

We have some exciting things lined up all around the UK, boat parties in Ibiza, I’ll also be making my Barcelona and Croatia debut! Checkout my Instagram for all dates and info.

Thanks a lot Lucas! Great to chat with you today and wishing you all the best. To round things off, is there anything else upcoming from yourself that you can let us in on?

I don’t want to give too much away until the quill has been dipped and it’s official but I may have remixed a UKG God! I’m just getting warmed up, so much more to come. Thanks a lot, I really enjoyed this.
