A master at work, DJ Mak 10 perfected his craft from a young age, going on to play some of the UK’s most renowned venues, events and radio stations. Making his debut as part of Nasty Crew alongside his brother DJ Marcus Nasty, Mak 10 went on to help develop some of the biggest names in grime including Dizzee Rascal, Ghetts, D Double E and Kano. This month sees the legend return with new single ‘The Best’, putting his spin on Lil’ Mo’s R&B classic ‘4Ever’ where he calls on Joe Fire to bring the lyrical heat on this ‘rhythm & grime’ fuelled, pirate radio-esque single. DMCWORLD caught up with the main man for a world exclusive insight into all the gear any budding DJs out there will need to start a career…
Hey DMCWORLD!
So, for a basic DJ starter pack, I would suggest the following…
Pioneer X DJ RX2
It’s an all in one DJ controller that has most features of the more expensive pioneers nexus range which would require you to purchase 2 pioneer CDJ 2000 and a pioneer DJ M Nexus. With this it has a display screen, a variety of effects within the mixer to get you started in with an introduction into using effects on tour DJ set. Though it’s not as robust as having the separates it’s definitely good value for money and a good place to start.
Advanced Starter pack using vinyl….
Technics SL1210’s
This is the industry standard brand of turntables in my opinion. Accompany these alongside a pioneer DJM 450 or above. The DJM450 is the baby of the mixers basic features as in 2 channels and effects but if you’re starting out this is all you need, if you feel like being a bit more adventurous you call look at the advance models.
KRK RP5 and RP6
These speakers are good value for money, the difference between the RP5 and RP6 is the volume so would take into account the size of your room when buying as if you have a larger room the RP5’s might not be sufficient. If your front room is under your bedroom you may want to use the RP5’s as the RP6 is very bass heavy hahaha!
Sennheiser HD-25
These are the most durable headphones, best sound quality in the market for DJ’s. There’s obviously other brands available but in my opinion, they are the best, I have always used them and it’s very important to have a good quality pair of headphones.
Shure SM58
You should always have a microphone in case you need to record anything such as streaming, radio sets, podcasts. You may also have MC’s, rappers or host. You get what you pay for on this one which is a durable, good microphone with a lead and very high quality. www.instagram.com/djmakten/
