Alex Adair

The biggest remixer on the planet right now…and the feel good tune of 2015

Interview by Dan Prince

Alex a massive welcome back to DMCWORLD…West Chiltington’s most famous resident! Where are you today young man?

“Hey Dan, I’m actually up in London doing a few studio sessions at the moment. Which is going well.”

Cool. Well the last time we spoke last year we were raving about ‘Make Me Feel Better’…you were quite chilled about it, reserved even! DMCWORLD are so proud of you dude, the record has already been called the “feel good track of the year”, it’s all over daytime and night time Radio 1, everyone spinning it…Marvin and Tammi must be looking down with big grins. Seriously dude, did you expect all this?

Yeah it’s been pretty crazy recently. Having the track playlisted on Radio 1 and all the support that’s been shown for it, it’s definitely something I didn’t expect.”

You are without doubt the go to remixer of the moment. Ella Eyre, Jessie Ware, Ella Henderson, Imagine Dragons and the unbelievable success of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ which has had over 2 million plays in under 3 months. Did you see that one coming, bet your bank manager is banging his head against the wall?!?!

It’s been great to be able to remix artists and songs of such a high quality, and it’s been a fun thing to do. The Ed Sheeran song was obviously something I was super pleased about when I got asked to do it, the original is such an incredible track. I definitely wasn’t expecting the reaction my remix received, and I’m just happy people enjoy the track.”

So tell us about these past 6 months. What have been some of the highlights for you – what does your family think of all this success?

My remix of Jessie Ware went to number 1 on Hype Machine, so that was a great thing for me. Obviously the popularity of the Ed Sheeran remix is incredible. And ‘Make Me Feel Better’ hitting the radio is just something I wouldn’t have imagined a year ago. So there’s been lots of things that have happened that I’m very grateful for. And as for my family, they are great. Very supportive, and they’re excited for me.”

You have been remixing some major artists…has there been a load of people offered to you that was a straight ‘thanks, but no thanks!’?

I definitely put a lot of thought into which remixes I take on. I want everything I put out there to be of the same quality, if not higher than the rest of my tracks. So I don’t take on the majority of remixes that I get offered.”

What is your approach to each remix you undertake. Is there an Alex Adair formula…?

Before I agree to do a remix, I actually play around with the stems first. And if it’s a remix that I’ll end up taking on, I’ll get a rough draft of the track done within a couple days. But apart from that, there’s no formula or anything. I just sort of make it really.”

Any new studio toys you bought yourself for Christmas or you still happy with your Macbook and midi keyboard?

“Pretty much still the same set up really. I mean I’ve made everything more comfortable, bigger screens and desks and things like that. But yeah, still just the Macbook and midi keyboard at the heart of the music making of me.”

Have you any desire AT ALL to start DJing?!?!

I’ve had some gigs that have been under the radar, just to get into it. And now I’m starting to book in some shows for the rest of year. My first one will be at The Electric in Brixton, supporting Kilngande. So I’m looking forward to that.”

And finally… what can you tell us about future studio work coming up…the world sits with baited breath…

I think the second single is very close Dan…”
