Anabel Sigel – Burn Residency Winner 2018

BURN Residency announced their 8th winner, Anabel Sigel earlier this month during Loco Dice’s set aboard The Ark music festival cruise. We catch up with the Barcelona based DJ and producer about her journey and what the future holds…

How does it feel to be crowned the winner of BURN Residency 2018?

I can’t put down in words how grateful I feel. I was there dancing and feeling Loco Dice’s set, my mates start to touch me and I felt a lot of hands touching me, “Anabel look at the screen!” I saw my face playing at Kappa Futur Festival and then my name. Now, it’s my opportunity to bring my soul and my power to the people. Finally I can bring my energy to the dance floor, make my kind of sound and receive opinions about my work with some of the best DJs and producers internationally. Now is time to grow and keep working harder and harder, day by day, step by step.

You will now be part of the BURN family! What are you looking forward to about this?

Just enjoying working my life’s work, I can’t be more grateful for that. Finally I can do what I want, BURN gives me this opportunity. BURN made my dream true.

What is the most important lesson you have learned on your BURN Residency journey?

I think…everything! I learned new types of productions for example after Luciano’s production challenge, my creativity and confidence grew a lot. The feedback from all of the amazing masters and mentors brings me the power to continue doing what my heart feels. Continuing playing with my soul, trying to make smiles to the crowd.

What was the best moment of this year’s programme?

For me, it was an amazing dream to play at Kappa Futur Festival, and really just every moment of this programme was completely amazing! So much better than what I can do at my home in front of the computer alone every days for hours, months… And obviously when I won… I was absolutely in shock at that moment, it was like a dream for me, I couldnt stop smiling, couldnt stop crying!

What advice would you give to those trying to break into the world of DJing and producing?

Act with the heart and the soul, be yourself and that dont get carried away by external opinions that are not from a safe and reliable environment. Release your emotions without fear and stand up for being yourself; dont try to imitate or destroy others. Life is magic and if you are an artist who plays clean, the universe will give you all that power to fulfill your dreams.

What is your stand out track of this Summer?

My track, “ElTema” for CLAPS Records was in the top 20 electronic charts on Traxsource, a really special track using my nephew’s vocals.

Who is your favourite new DJ?

I think Amelie Lens is doing amazing work around the world! She seems like an amazing woman who knows about soul and music! She does heartfelt techno and all of her sets bring power to the people. This so important for me. I don’t care how much you feel tired, it is your moment, your hours, your energy and you need to present and give this to the people that go to see you around the world.

And – outside of the BURN mentors – your favourite DJ legend?

Nicole Moudaber, Nina Kraviz, Jamie Jones, Carl Cox and Seth Troxler.

If you had to pick one genre of music to play for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Anyone… I hate when you can’t express all of yourself …maybe start an another kind of music like blues or jazz. My roots are from this and hip hop. I’m from the Canary Islands and when I was young, my uncle gave me the opportunity to listen to all the best music the world has to offer where you can hear in the tracks the soul of every single letter.

Who is your dream DJ to play a back to back set with and why?

Nicole Moudaber, I always close my eyes when she is playing. Loco Dice because he has the flow and I love the groove, his style is so similar to mine. Carl Cox would be an awesome b2b for sure, it’s all about the feelings and playing with soul, dancing, smiling, bringing your heart…

What film or TV series do you think has the best soundtrack?

I saw The Get Down on Netflix. I felt this series a lot with all of the history and DJ roots from Brooklyn.
