Andrea Oliva

2016 has been another year to remember for Swiss producer Andrea Oliva. With releases on labels like Desolat and Knee Deep In Sound, a Radio 1 Ibiza Essential Mix and worldwide club nights for ANTS on going throughout the year, the upward trajectory seems set to continue for this ever-evolving artist and here we see him joining the roster of the ever impressive Cuttin’ Headz imprint. Dan Prince gets stuck in…

Andrea a huge welcome back to DMCWORLD, where in the world are you right now?

I´m still in Ibiza making the most of the last bits of summer here!

Let’s kick off with the tune on everyone’s lips at the moment, your Vermona beast on The Martinez Brothers’ Cuttin’ Headz imprint. Please talk us through your original mix…

I bought a new drum machine called Vermona and I was jamming around. Next thing we had what I felt was a big track, which I then sent to Martinez Brothers and they loved it straight away.

Coming up with two interpretations is Steve Rachmad aka Sterac – talk us through his reworks and why you chose him for mix up duties…

I chose to work with Steve as I spoke about the possibility of doing a B-Side first but I thought a remix would be cooler and the first person we thought of was Steve for it. The drums and the baseline of the original are quite funky and so to do a remix with a techno producer like Steve also was perfect for me. Was super lucky to get two finally!

You were responsible for one of  THE BIGGEST moments of the summer in Ibiza this year with your Radio 1 Essential Mix live from Ushuaïa…tell us about the experience…

Yeah what a crazy experience. It was always something I wanted to achieve of course. It was kind of tricky for me as it was recorded live in such a huge event so I wanted to play to the crowd, but also satisfy someone who was listening to an Essential mix. The feedback has been insane though and am super happy.

Space Ibiza closed it’s doors for the last time last week, what are some of your favourite memories from this seminal club?

First time I ever played there in 2005 was my first ever gig on the island for a brand called In Bed with Space. I´ve gone on to play Carl Cox, Kehakuma and an Elrow residency this summer – all great parties and I just have great memories of the place.

Are you looking forward to Ushuaïa’s transformation of the venue next summer, what are you hoping will happen to preserve this dancefloor dynasty?

It’s professionals taking over with new visions and it´ll be a new era. Of course, you don´t forget, but things change and you just put positivity into the next thing.

5 big tunes in your box this weekend, please give us a few words on each…

1. Pearson Sound – XLB [Pearson Sound]

So hypnotic and strong on the dancefloor. Proper 808 / 909 techno groove!

2. AD/D – Motorcity Sunrise (Art Department Remix) [No 19 Music]
Reminds me a bit of the 90 techno sounds, the way the synth is played takes you back in time. I love it.

3. Redshape – Tel Aviv [Running Back]

This could be a Mr. G track with that dominant organ lead sound. The break of the track and how the synths build up is just great!

4. Mighty Dub Katz – Let The Drums Speak (Butch Remix) [Southern Fried]

Its all about the drum groove here, This track turns every floor upside down.

5. D.Y.A – Do It [Solide]

This track is all about the general vibe. Balearic drums with a dope melody and a fantastic groove. This is my best daytime party track . So classy!

Looking back on Ibiza’s summer, do you think we had a good one on the white isle? What / who impressed you the most?

The usual suspects killed it once again – ANTS, Paradise, Elrow, Circo Loco, Music On and Cocoon were all next level.

An up and coming DJ/producer we should be looking out for in 2017?

Bas Ibellini

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

Well apart from Vermona I have a collaboration with Livio & Roby on Desolat, I also have a solo release on the Desolat Sampler. I´m working on a remix for Groove Armada, and some new solo releases I can´t talk about yet – keep listening!
