Ang Low

Brooklyn based artist and producer Ang Low is one of a kind, creating pop and hip-hop fusion in a totally unique way. With even R&B influences thrown in too, his latest single ‘If I Slipped’ came out yesterday. We sat down with Ang so he could let us know a little more about him…

Hi Ang, great to meet you! Firstly, how have you been the last year with the pandemic, has it affected your musical plans at all?

Hi. What a weird time to exist and create art. I struggled and went through a little depression but I’m sure everyone did. I evolved in a weird way. I had just moved into a new studio. I was able to focus all my energy into practicing and writing. Created some beautiful pieces including “IF I Slipped”

Was music a large part of your life growing up?

It was.. mostly from church. I was from the hood and my mom, knowing I loved music, tried to involve me.. church, school plays, lessons. but we were poor so most things like training didn’t last.

What tracks most inspired you to follow your path in music?

I dont know if a particular track inspired me vs an artist career. I’m inspired by people that focus on the music and really let that shine in their career while leading positively. Tierra whack, jazmine Sullivan, leon bridges, erykah badu, Sam smith.. just to name a few.

How did ‘If I Slipped’ first come about?

I was at a place where I felt stuck, like I had no way out. lost my job due to covid, i was stressed. Literally just felt like the next bad word from someone, one wrong move would make me pop off.  I just sat down and wrote If I Slipped on the keyboard in one night. Brought it to my producer and made some magic. I had some fellow producer’s come lay stuff down and it just came. My producer Andrew came up with the title

Do you usually start with production or with melody?

No particular way.. im flexible

What is the message of ‘If I Slipped’?

That you’re never too far in life to fall back to where you first started. We are all one bad decision away from losing it. For me it was body issues, success (whatever that means) and anger.

There is, I feel, so much pressure to be … something, anything in this world. Sometimes we don’t know how to get there. I had to let my guard down, accept that good and bad happens. Accept defeat and win with grace. A back and forth struggle to know yourself better.

Are you planning any live shows now it’s safe to do so?

Also, I just had a show on the 23rd and I have a show on the 11th at wonderville.

What will the rest of 2021 bring for you, do you have any other upcoming releases planned?

I have a few more releases planned for this year, more shows. more personal creative projects where my friends can really get to know Ang.  I was recently signed to house of feelings label, and it feels really good to be a part of a community.
