ANNA – Brazil’s first lady of techno

Interview by Nicky Trax

Driving forward from a momentous 2015, ANNA has characteristically kept her foot firmly on the pedal keeping her musical output to the highest of standards. With this coming year looking more successful than the last, 2016 has already seen her dropping a number of releases including the eclectic tech-house production ‘Odd Concept’ (Diynamic) and her intricately crafted remix of DJ Tonio’s ‘Queen’ (Suara). On top of a hectic touring schedule, ANNA’s new EP “Redemption” is out on Terminal M with something new on Knee Deep In Sound coming soon. DMC catches up with ANNA ahead of her headline set at Egg LDN: The Birthday on Saturday May 7th

ANNA a massive welcome back to DMCWORLD. Where on planet earth are you today?

I am in São Paulo in Brazil as I’ve come to play at the Tomorrowland Festival.

What piece of music has made you smile today?

Prince’s beautiful ‘When Doves Cry’

A huge date coming up for London town on May 7th when one of Europe’s finest clubs gets set to celebrate their birthday with a fabulous line up. You enjoy coming back to London right?

Yes, I love London, but I’ve never played there before! It’s crazy as I will be doubling up on May 7th with an early set at Sankeys and then on to Egg London and I’m super excited!

Birthdays at clubs are always that little bit different, DJs usually pull out a classic or two. When was the last time you pulled out an anthem from yesteryear?

Yesterday at Terraza in Brasil when I closed my set with Laurent Garnier’s ‘Flashback’ . This track creates such a magic atmosphere and it really took the crowd to another level.

What can you tell us about your studio work at the moment?

I just finished two remixes, one for Wehbba and one for Matador. Also I’ve just completed some original tracks, but they are not signed yet. My studio is at home so it is easier for me to always get things going and I never spend too much time without going back to the studio.

An up and coming producer to watch out for this summer?

TERR – she just signed her first EP to Hotflush, and it’s really good stuff.

Your best and worst festival experience?

My worst experience was some years ago at Circuito in Brazil. There was a van to go to the party, but coming back there was nothing and we had to walk through mud and rain for about 2 kilometres until we reached the car and it was horrible.
My best experience was playing for Carl Cox & Friends at the Ultra Festival, which was actually a dream come true!

A festival you are looking forward to this summer?

The Sea You Festival where I am playing alongside Tale Of Us, Nina Kraviz, Recondite, Jamie Jones, Sven Vath and Chris Liebing…such a great line up.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend

‘Turning Point’ – Wehbba  – an emotional and strong track and always a highlight of my recent sets.
‘Redemption’ – ANNA –  I’m so happy with my latest release as it reached No 2 in the Techno charts and it’s getting great reactions on the dancefloor
‘Turn The Lights’ Nick Curly Remix – Christian Smith –  great tool track with a strong groove and a powerful break, the way I like it.
‘Acid Bath’ – Pig & Dan – It’s from their new album “Modular Baptism” and I love the hook on this track. It’s is simple but so very powerful.
Rodriguez Jr. – Love the melody on this, it makes the crowd fly.

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in your life and how did you overcome it?

I really can’t remember anything which I’ve had to overcome 🙂 Every big decision I’ve made until now has brought me good things, thank God!

Which famous person would you most like to see play you in a film?

Penelope Cruz

What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

Moving to Europe for the first time.  I had no agency, no agent and I had a career in Brasil so it wasn’t a good idea to stay away at that moment, but I took the risk because I wanted to expand my career, and get to know and see other artists, other cultures, and it was worth it.

A club date you cannot wait form this year…

Playing with Solomun at his Solomun + 1 parties at Pacha, Ibiza this summer.

And finally gotta ask, how do you like your eggs in the morning?

Boileg eggs, with salt, pepper and truffle oil…
