Massive new epic trance smash from Toronto’s finest

Welcome to DMCWORLD Arnej, where in the world are you right now?

“Presently in my studio at home in Toronto Dan.”

You were born in a small village near Sarajevo in Bosnia but now live in Toronto what¹s the story there?

“My family emigrated to Canada some 20 years ago due to the Balkan conflict back in the early 90s. My uncle has lived in Canada since the mid 80s, so it made sense to move here during the conflict.”

You have just crashed into the world famous DMC Buzz Chart with your new EP ‘ŒThe Second Coming¹, tell us about the history of this classy releaseŠ…

“I wanted to capture some of the feeling that was what put me ‘on the map’ several years back. The music has changed as the years have gone by, with many new production techniques and tricks available at the producers disposal. ‘The Second Coming’ represents a return to what I felt is the essential for Trance music, which is a big captivating melody.”

You once told people ³to bring crackers to the club and I’ll provide the cheese. So without your tongue stuck firmly in your cheek, what is the current top 10 you are spinning?

“In no particular order…

01. Orjan Nilsen – Endymion
02. KhoMha – The Dark Knight
03. Beat Service – Fortuna
04. Markus Schulz & Ferry Corsten – Loops & Tings
05. Arnej – The Second Coming
06. Markus Schulz & Elevation – Finish Line
07. W&W – Shotgun (Arnej Re-Acidification)
08. Arnej – Pariah
09. KhoMha – Vapour
10. Ellie Goulding – Lights (Elevation vs. Grube & Hovsepian Mix)

Your songs and their titles are reflective of the mood you are in and what has been happening in your life. So,looking back at 2012 what sort of a feeling are the songs you are currently working on going to have?

“It probably won’t be as cheery and happy as people would hope. Unfortunately, I was stricken with bad news just recently that my dad has Stage 4 Lung Cancer. Being a person that is in tune with his emotions, these feelings will eventually make it’s way across into my work, as it has in the past.”

What is the best piece of advice your father has taught you?

“To always give it my all, no matter what.”

What is the record that changed your life?

“The record that introduced me to Dutch Trance was Rank 1 – Airwave.”

Did you get used to get funny looks from people when they asked you what you did as a day job and you replied “I make whooshes and swooshes”?

“Ha ha!! Apparently it is still a mystery to quite a few that prior to my music career launching off, I worked in the video game industry for a better part of a decade.  You can only imagine how many whooshes were made in that time period!”

What is the best club you have rocked in 2012?

“The one club that totally threw me by surprise was Webster Hall in New York. I always knew it was a legendary venue but I was completely unprepared for the madness that ensued.”

Why do you think Canada is more club orientated whilst America is all about the big event?

“Canada has always been on the forefront of Dance Music, but unfortunately the laws aren’t friendly when it comes to throwing big outdoor events. Things have somewhat changed this year, with many new festivals on the horizon, so the future does look bright in this department.”

What is the best and worst thing about living in Toronto?

“My immediate family and friends all live here, that is definitely the best thing about Toronto.  Probably the worst would be the ever-so-declining nightclub scene, rude people and the chilly winters.”

Who are the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to at the moment?

“Some that are rocking the scene currently would be Beat Service, Orjan Nilsen and Leon Bolier & KhoMha.”

In an interview in 2008 the interviewer asked you where you would like to be in 5 years. You replied “lying on a sunny beach in the Caribbean running my
world empire”. So, with three months to go, how is it looking?

“One can dream can he not? So, where we stand presently, well the dream is still ongoing Dan.”

What is coming next from you studio wise?

“I’ve been quite experimental with sounds, but except more of my future stuff to be going back to my roots, and what people know me for.*

What is your favourite festival/outdoor event story of 2012?

“It would probably be during Sunrise Festival in Poland where I ended up playing…3 times! I played my main set on the Saturday, then played another set at the closing party on the Sunday then on my way back to the hotel my ear was drawn to music which seemed to come from downstairs. I ventured down to find out that there was a club in the basement! I ended up playing another set in this tiny club, which was totally unexpected for myself and surely for the attendees”

And finally, how is the blindfolded juggling and stone carving coming along?

“‘The Second Coming’ was the direct end result of such craftsmanship, so you tell me?”
