After hours grooving at the cheekiest little lock in’s
“Small gatherings after a big night out are one of my favourite things. There’s a fair chance that on any given weekend you’ll find us at either James’ or my house after the gig with a small but committed crew. The musical discoveries you make at these sessions are often pretty great as these kind of gatherings usually play out like a friendly competition around who can pull out the sweetest tune that no one else has heard before. Here are some of our favourites that have gone down a treat in the past…”
Kenny Dope – Get On Down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6Yyb3N9IuA
Chad: One of many records that samples Minnie Riperton. First time I heard this was on the Nightmares On Wax DJ Kicks. The first time I heard it out was DJ Vadim playing to about 1000 people at the Metro and he dropped it right in the middle of his set. Haven’t heard anyone drop this record in a club in many years but it gets regular play between the hours of 5 and 7am at my place.
Bill Withers – Lovely Day

Chad: I’ve always had bits and pieces from Bill Withers kicking around at home but it’s only in the last couple years that I really got into his stuff. I watched that documentary Still Bill on a flight to New York earlier this year and yep, Bill Withers is the man. Lovely Day is just one of those tracks that leaves you feeling optimistic, always a good vibe when the day is starting and you haven’t slept yet.
Chris Rea – Josephine (Todd Terje edit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FU31Zps3fQ
Chad: There’s a couple versions of the original and a couple edits of this one floating around. My fav is definitely Terje’s, it’s perfect for an after hours session. We had a gig with Ame, Move D and Benji from Permanent Vacation a couple of years ago and we all ended up back at my house after the show taking turns playing tunes. About a year later Move D emailed me out of the blue asking me for a track ID on this one, needless to say that kick-on was a fun one.
Pastor TL Barrett & The Youth For Christ Choir – Like A Ship
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lypO8pt_8NQ
Chad: First heard this on one of the Numero Group compilations, I love pretty much everything those guys do. They’ve since put out a reissue just of Pastor TL Barrett & The Youth For Christ Choir and it’s all great, but this is the one. It’s one of those tracks that people always ‘get’ the first time they hear it. I showed it to a friend once and he said it pretty well… “If you don’t feel this one, you just don’t feel.”
Gene Dunlap Band – There’s Talk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT-aFL9p_0o
Chad: Sometimes it’s just too hard and everyone is just too tired to actually make selections. If we’re at my house I often put on Sean P’s Originals comp on Claremont 56 and this is easily my favourite track from it.
The Sabres Of Paradise – Smokebelch II (Beatless mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGQ3iZZXaJM
James: To me this is pretty much the sound of the sun rising. I first found this on a Cafe del Mar CD when I was in high school and I’ve only just rediscovered it this year. I’ve always wanted to play this on a beach.. one day, one day..
The Streets “Weak Become Heroes”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z1kRhiPE0E
James: Mike Skinner captures what clubbing’s all about. Haha and the dark morning after. I’ve tried pasting in all my favourite lines but I think you’re going to have to read the lyrics and watch that video! Also we’ve all met European Bob.
Isley Brothers – Between The Sheets
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glhdcJ7K3XM
James: When you first put it on most people go ‘Ohhh Biggie!’ which is always a fun tease. Probably one of the most erotic songs you can have up your sleeve really, in particular the ‘enough of the singing, lets make love’ bit at 3:23.
Fleetwood Mac – Dreams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNavPWHmfI0&feature=related
James: One of my favourite songs EVER. Perfect track to get everyone super loved up and singing.
Roy Ayers – Everybody Loves The Sunshine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQtmkoakjOc
James: Everybody loves the sunshine! This song is particularly amazing in the morning, like 8am-Sunday-most-people-waking-up-for-breakfast morning. I’m normally the first one to fall asleep and rarely make the 8am call but I have done this once and it was nice.
