Cobra Effect

The chimp loving, west coast/Swedish ‘duo’ ripping it up with ‘Don’t Pass Go’

Interview : Dan Prince

Mystery producers, welcome to DMCWORLD. Always a challenge doing an interview with an artist who wishes to remain anonymous for whatever reason. We had it with Friend Within because the Liverpool producer started to create a different style of music he was associated with…so what is your excuse…on the run from the police?

”The sound we were shooting for didn’t really fit our other names…plus this gave us a chance to try something different. Change is good...sometimes…”

So what we do know is one of you live in Sweden and the other Los Angeles, how did you hook up in the first place?

We put Sweden because of the SHM bootleg and LA because that’s where our studio is….truth be told, one of us is from Antarctica and the other from Micronesia. We met when we were both on vacation in Peru, summer of 66…we some how ended up on the same Ayahuasca tent sitting next to each other on the same log. When someone has wings and fuzz tentacles, it’s hard to take them serious, but at the same time hard not to want to work with them.”

Well whatever the reason, hats off for an incredible piece of dance music, ‘Don’t Pass Go’. The Buzz Chart crew absolutely love this song, “full of nrg and reminds us of the classic ‘Let Me Show You’ by Camisra. So, talk us the sound and history of the track…

‘Let me show you’ is such a tune! Cue fog hooooorn…!!! Don’t Pass Go’ was actually started before we met. When the group was formed, the dude from Micronesia showed it to the doood from Antarctica, he got really excited …worked on it till the next day….and then showed it the other dude, and then he was like yes! The WAH WAH WAH WAH sound has always been a favorite sound going back to the Azzido da Bass days..and then into the deadmau5 cthtulu days and so on and so on. We just wanted to make something that would work in the club but also be cooool with loads of “what the f were you thinking?” type sounds.”

Time for some dictionary consultancy…”The cobra effect occurs when an attempted solution to a problem actually makes the problem worse.” Thoughts in that?

“I don’t know if any problem is ever really solved,  at least not in our world. Both of our lives are riddled with bad decisions, so why assume that would stop when it comes to our productions?”

One of your biggest fans on the internet at the moment is Hot Mouth, another Los Angeles producer who is on fire at the moment with his new collab with Lazy Rich ‘Flash’. You digging that guy’s stuff?

“I wouldn’t say he is our biggest fan…more of a friend doing a favor. He’s in the same circle as us so natural – we love what he does, sometimes. Plus we’d like to think our biggest fan is Edward Furlong from Terminator 2. We send him our demos, he hasn’t responded yet…but we are pretty sure he was feeling the bootleg.”

He posted your record on his Facebook site this week, one of his fans said “there’s way too many notes in the drop”. Would you agree?

“I think the notes are… F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F so maybe too many of the same note? F F F F F F F F F F F it just keeps going. Maybe they meant the acid trip break down which is a combination of random samples reversed…I dunno.”

What’s with the chimp obsession on Facebook guys, some of that shit is disturbing…!?!

“They are just like us…they throw their own shit. They have big gums. They are really really cuddly. They have been known to rip peoples faces off. All around awesome.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning…

“We actually just did a top ten for beatport. Copy…paste…

Who are some of the big producers from around the world you are giving high fives to right now?

“We’ll of course the Rising crew has been a tremendous help, Chris Lake, Peo De Pitte, TJR, Hot Mouth & Nom De Strip…we high five them all day long…I’d rather not list all of our high fives, because if I leave someone out, they might read this and then never want to high five us again. High fives are very important to us and wouldn’t want to see an exercise in name dropping prohibit us from future phalanges festivities.”

Will we be seeing you DJing anywhere anytime soon together?

“Soon! We have a lot of music we are trying to finish, as well as our own separate careers we still have to attend to. So hmm…hopefully the summer we will be out and about making really, really bad decisions…DJ’n…Lets just say SUMMER.”

And finally what is coming out next from Cobra Effect?

“Wooooo it’s a goodie…I can’t say…BUT SOOOON! More than a month….less than two?”
