The Italian trio spinning our dancefloors with dizzying effect
Interview : Dan Prince
Guys welcome back to DMCWORLD. A great start to 2013 with some rocking tunes and great gigs around the world. Let’s kick off with Miami – you played at some fabulous parties, she were the highlights…?
“Yes it’s true, we played at some fabulous parties in Miami. The best one was FMIF at Story, but we had a lot of fun at Nikki Beach too where we played at the Spinnin party and at the No Sugar Added party, really cool!”
What were some of the new big tunes that were massive in Miami?
“The biggest ones were (of course) our new track just released on Jack Back records called ‘Vertigo’ and also the brand new track by Nicky Romero ‘Symphonica’.”
Funniest thing that happened during conference week?
“Maybe Steve Aoki’s show where he jumped (as usual) into the crowd from his stage.”
Your new tune ‘Vertigo’ is flying. A wonderful slice of pounding drums and electrifying synths. Tell us the history of the tune…
“When we produce tracks like ‘Vertigo’ we used to spend a few days to search for new powerful sounds in our libraries, then we start to experiment different ways till we are totally satisfied and we start to “test” the track in our DJ set.
We have heard on the grapevine you have some five or six tunes of your own about to drop?
“Yes you have good informers Dan, we are going to release about 4 / 5 tracks up to the end of the year. More surprises to come!”
And we hear there are some exciting collabs coming out with David Guetta, Benny Benassi and Nicky Romero…what are the plans?
“Yes we are preparing a new track with David – and we have already made a track with Benny which will be released after the summer. And maybe we’ll do something together with Nicky soon as well.”
You coined the name Daddy’s Groove in homage to some of your DJ idols such as Todd Terry. Who from that era have you still to DJ with?
“It was a great era. We were just kids and we used to love those kind of artists, the one that we’d love to play with is for sure Danny Tenaglia, his talent is unique!”
What is the current top 10 you are spinning?
Here we go:
1) Daddy’s Groove – Stellar
2) Calvin Harris ft. Elle Goulding -Need Your Love (Nicky Romero Remix)
3) Daddy’s Groove & Cryogenix – Vertigo
4) Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike & Moguai – Mammoth
5) Sander Van Doorn & Mark Knight V Underworld – Ten
6) Daddy’s Groove & Dino – Walking On Air
7) Alesso & One Republic – If I Loose Myself
8) Tommy Trash – Monkey See Monkey Do (Tom Staar Remix)
9) Daddy’s Groove & Cryogenix – Tilt
10) Pryda – Powerdrive
You once admitted that it is really helpful being a trio in the studio. Why?
“To be 3 of us in the studio is really helpful because we have the chance to mix 3 different backgrounds and 3 different talents having the best score!’
Who brings what to the studio, who excels in what department?
“Peppe is the most technical of us because he is an engineer, Carlo comes from the techno scene and he knows how to make the tracks work and Gianni discovers new sounds to use very often. There is a very good balance between us!”
Being devoted Daft Punk fans, what are your thoughts on the whole ‘new album ‘ stories…?
“We think that the new album from Daft Punk will change the music scene again and we really can’t wait!”
You also admitted recently that it is frustrating that your home country Italy has a very dry club scene and few producers doing anything interesting. How are things looking in 2013?
“Something is changing right now in our country, there are lots of new guys that are producing good stuff and finally promoters are discovering the “festival” reality, so we hope to have a great 2013.”
Another season in Ibiza is looming, how much of a difference was the new DJ booth at Pacha last year?
“Last year’s booth was closer to the crowd, it was nice to feel the vibe on the dancefloor, but the old place where the booth was(it seems it will be there again next summer) was better for our guests that could be around the DJ booth.”
What is it about Ibiza that makes it so special?
“Two different things make it so special, the first is that it’s a wonderful island with some fantastic places and the second is that there are a lot of party people around and the vibe is really amazing, the best place in the world for sure!”
And finally, who is the most famous person on the dance floor you have entertained at F**m Me I’m Famous?
“Ironically it was other really famous DJs dancing to our music, like Tiesto Martin Solveig and Afrojack…!”
