Danny Gould – Clockwork Orange

Interview by Dan Prince

Well big man, the 4 week countdown has begun to Ibiza! How is Essex this morning, it’s in the mid 80s here on the white isle…

Let’s see Dan. There has been thunderous storms much like those of Ibiza last August, the roads and hills are flooded, my office and train lines were flooded…it’s a soggy Brittania!

The schools are good in Ibiza, there are hundreds of beautiful million euro houses who need stunning gardens. What is stopping you moving to Ibiza? Do you not trust yourself?!?

I trust myself 1,000000%. But there is nothing outside of Clockwork that interests me in Ibiza…except the real Ibiza. This I feel comes with age. Maybe the wonderful Spanish coffee and Marlboro Golds are my only temptation…

Right then. Clockwork Orange – The Ibiza Weekend 2016 taking place July 22nd – 25th with some amazing DJs set in venues all across the island. Let’s kick off with the music. A big move for you leaving your spiritual home Es Paradis and taking the carnival to Sankeys. What were the reasons behind this and how did Pepe take the news?

Everything has it’s time limit and most certainly a new place ensures one not rest on the laurels of old. New pastures fresh and not green are the certainty for ever increasing desire, is it not? If we remain staunch to the missionary position then we never introduce the German Table downward move and what would life be truly like then? Pepe is Paradis, we are Clockwork. It’s our baby that we always have to protect.

How many people are making the pill-grimage this time from the UK?

Around 2000 this year. The run up to Clockwork week is a glorious time, the planes are filled with orange all arriving and smiling, the veterans of Ibiza and Clockwork Old.

For the first time you are taking over Nassau as a pre-party venue, warming things up nicely for Sankeys. What is going to be on the musical menu at Nassau?

Funky not chunky, old never bold, cooler than cats, those tunes that make you go oooooooooh. Never for the headstrong but undoubtedly for those that have served their Ibiza time and house music from it’s very first days.

Es Vive in my opinion is the best afters venue in Ibiza. It’s like a padded cell with no security and a great sound system. This is going to be messy right?

It’s gonna be like a scene out of Cuckoos Nest, we even have our very own 7ft Indian.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house at Café Mambo last year when you dropped your sunset session Mr Gould. Rumour has it Café Del Mar were trying to sign you up for a multi album deal?

Ha ha ha ha very funny Daniel. There is an art and an honour in sunset mixes, it has to have a beginning and a middle and an end. You have to create something truly special and poignant for the crowd, even more so when they are your age as they get what you are trying to portray.

Seriously though, how long have you been working on your sunset tracklisting for this year’s Mambo set?

One year, poor Mrs Gould – she has heard the same old tunes for a whole year since we got back from Ibiza. The very same day we landed I started working on it. Tunes I hear, tunes I love and tunes that are perfect for the occasion. One of the tunes was from last October in Ibiza, I was driving along near Salinas, the sun was beaming, roof was down Marlboro Gold alight, buzzing being in Ibiza and this tune came on, Shazammed it and it’s in the set. Donato Dozzy. Tin Man.

What 1 DJ’s set can’t you wait to witness this summer at Clockwork?

Paul Trouble Anderson is the one we are all waiting with baited breath for, yet the title is there for the taking.

Who are the DJs that just ‘get’ a Clockwork Orange crowd?

Andy Manston, Seb Fontaine and Blocko.

When you think back at the last few years at Clockwork in Ibiza, what are the 2 tunes that always spring to mind…

‘Can You Feel It’ and ‘Promised Land’.

What are some of the things you have learnt about putting on parties in Ibiza these past few years. What are some of the main changes, hurdles you have had to overcome…?

No changes. Be on the ball, love what you do, keep on the case and don’t leave nothing to chance. We work with many old friends and even new ones, the guys at Nassau are cool as cats.

Away from the music, where are some of the restaurants and beaches you always love returning to?

Can Pujol – love it love it love it. And all of the beaches except the fab butt beaches of San Antonio.

And finally, what can you tell us regarding UK future news re Clockers?

Ministry in September goes on sale July 15th – all tables are sold out already, it’s gonna go off…truly off. The Birthday March 18th 2017 is something we have been working on for a good while and is gonna be truly special – in a truly special place.
