Acid Mondays

Big Cosmix, sets at DC10 and BPM, huge new EP…they have hit the ground running in 2016

Interview by Dan Prince

Guys a huge welcome to DMCWORLDI saw you leaving Ibiza yesterdayI take it you were heading to BPM in Mexico? Where are you playing this week

Yeah weve just arrived in Mexico to play at The BPM Festival. Were playing at the Bag Of Tricks party on Friday night and then at Guy Gerber’s Rumors party on Saturday.

So the festive period well and truly over. How was Christmas for you?

Christmas was good thanks. We both went to the UK to visit some family, its the first time weve done that in quite a while. Got to catch up with lots of friends as well so it was nice. Definitely prefer Christmas in the sunshine though!!

New Years Day in Ibiza is so much more important than NYE, how was DC10 this yeargive us some highlights

Well playing at DC10 at anytime is always really special for us, but NYD was amazing this year! Theres definitely a different vibe on NYD, more people from the island come out that dont come as often in the summer and everyones got their coats on. Heard some great sets but the stand out one for us was definitely DJulz on the terrace, he always brings the heat!!

So we are checking in with the Mondays thanks to your splendid outer space and mind mix for cosmicpineapple and their Cosmix series, the monthly podcast where DJs are invited to make a mix of music that inspires with no boundaries. How did you approach this mix, did you look at it differently than other mixes you have providedthe music was different for sure

We are both into all types of music and everything cosmic, so to be asked to put together this mix was a great honor. Kim Booth is a really good friend and we are totally on the same vibe as her so we knew we could express ourselves in a personal and experimental way. We got together quotes, soundscapes, tracks and built the mix like a painting, feeling the different textures, energy and creating a flow that would capture the imagination, taking the listener to a higher state of being.

Great to see the Dub of your track ‘Chi Ka Pasagetting loads of props and loved the recent Tacos Per MinuteEP on Rumors, what is coming next from you studio wise?

Thanks! Glad youre feeing them. The next release from us is an EP on Terrence Terry’s label La Vie En Rosewhich were really happy with. It’s called Garaldo and is a tribute to two of our good friends, Mike from the Cuban brothers & Mo Funk. After that were also getting ready to launch our own label and have a few other things up our sleeve that we cant mention at the moment but are pretty special.

What are the big 5 tunes in your box this weekend

– Chk Chk Chk – Say It Aint So – Seth Troxler & Phill Moffas Lost Souls Of Saturn Remix (Warp Recordings)

Loving this remix from Seth & Phil, has great energy and lots of musicality in there.

– Juxta Position Vol2 – Peacemaker (Mistress)

The Latest one from Marquis Hawkes under his Juxtaposition alias. It’s awesome, sleazy techno with a great groove.

– Acid Mondays Elevate (Acid Mondays)

One of our own thats been in our sets for a while now and always turns the dance floor upside down.

– Thomas Melchior – Right Of Passage, The Induction (Lick My Deck Records).

Next level deep sleaze from one of our favourite never fails producers.

– Cab Drivers – Mind Trip Seventh City records

Bouncy acid hooked bass-line beast! Love these guys, played before their live set at fabric in December…proper quality!

A sad day for the world of music this week with the passing of David Bowie. Without Bowie many of us wouldnt be doing what we are doing today. Where you a fan of the man and his music?

We are a fan of anyone who is creative and thinks outside the box and he was a pioneer of music is so many ways! We are obviously sad for the family and friends who will miss him but we would like to celebrate his life. He will live forever through his music being reborn over and over through new listeners discovering his timeless collection.

Lets take you back to December now and that wonderful night down at Fabric in London. Everything you hoped for?

To be able to play in Room1 at Fabric, on that sound system, alongside that lineup and surrounded by so many of our friends was something really special! So grateful to Judy, Andy and everyone else who was involved. Can’t wait to do it all over again!!

So tell us about your studio relationshipwho excels in what department?

We both work on all aspects when were making music.

When was the last time you had a big fuck off argument about music?

Dont think weve ever had a big argument about anything, especially not music. There are obviously times when we dont agree on things or have a different perspective but were both very chilled and dont see the point in arguments. Compromise and understanding is the key to any relationship, whether its business, friendship, family or whatever.

So you are chilling on the beachwhat 1 album are you both listening to, to mellow the vibe

Nonkeens new album The Gamblethats forthcoming on R&S Records. It’s great and perfect for chilling on the beach or in any environment.

Okay lets rewind for a moment. You joined forces in Leeds back in the day, after meeting in Playmusic where Alex was working. What were your first impressions of each other?

We both loved Vinyl, we were into a lot of the same music and we loved partying so we couldnt go wrong from there!

What were the clubs and DJs you were into back then?

Circus, Back to Basics, DC10, Derrick Carter, Moodymann, Doc Martin…

What prompted the move to Ibiza. Has living on a small island all year round been all easy sailing??

Wed both been visiting Ibiza for a while and gradually the desire to stay got stronger over time. This desire was matched by opportunities to help us stay longer until we decided to stop leaving altogether and just live there full time. Spending any amount of time in Ibiza is always likely to provide you with a curveball, as anyone whos been there will agree with, so we wouldnt say it’s been plain sailing but it still excites us more than any other place weve visited and is one of the best places on earth to learn about yourself and have an amazing time while doing so!

What are some of the gigs you are looking forward to this year

Well obviously BPM is what were most excited about at the moment, had such a great time last year so it feels really good to be back. Also really looking forward to playing at Foundation in Rio De Janeiro next month. It’s run by and features some really good friends of ours and its on the day before Rio carnival starts so the after party should be pretty good as well!!
