Adana Twins

Straight outta Hamburg house city, the boys return with the beautiful ‘Drive’

Interview : Dan Prince

Take it Easy, Friso welcome to DMCWORLD for the first time…where in the world are you today?

“Hi! Dan – I’m Take it Easy and I’m currently in Los Angeles, Friso is in Tokyo. Traditionally March is our vacation month.”

You have the Buzz Chart crew jumping through hoops again, this time via ‘Drive’, a beautiful slab of dreamy house coming out on Exploited and already massive support from Tong, Tensnake and Sasha amongst others. Talk us through the track…

“What can we say? We’re really happy about the great feedback we got in the past weeks. The beats were originally produced for an accapella sample that Friso found. We also cleared the rights to use the sample. But in the end we felt the instrumental with it’s strong piano chords was to thick for the voice. So we decide to look for a vocalist. With a few examples we asked our management and Shir Khan from Exploited to help us find a singer. Suddenly Shir Khan introduced us to Khan and we really loved the idea. We are still huge fans of the track he produced with DJ T. When we listened to the vocals for the first time we knew: YES! They were perfect for the beat.”

Did you know on completion that you had created a very large tune?

“It seemed we had created a strong EP. All our friends were instantly in love with the tracks and the feedback from the dancefloor was fantastic too.”

“There is only one reason relationships fail. Boredom.” Is that a personal experience?

“Haha, the director Christian Straub added the text to the video. I believe he should answer this question. However, I think he is right. If there is too much boredom in a relationship it eventually fails. The positive aspects should always overweight the negative ones.”

When you have a tune just out and the world’s producers start supporting you, who are some of the names that are important to you, to give you the big thumbs up?

Take it Easy: “Of course! Solomun, Soul Clap, Miguel Campbell, Maya Jane Coles and many more supported our tracks. This really means a lot to us. They all played a role in making House music what it is today. We’re truly inspired by them.”

Friso: “I always feel honored when some of my old heroes like what we do. For example the “house-gangster” Sneak!”

What is coming out next from the Exploited label – in an interview last year you said that maybe 2014 is the time “for some bigger stuff”…?

“Maybe we will release our first album. When and where is still a little blurry, but we are working on it!”

Tell us about your studio set up – who excels where?

“At the moment we’re mostly working with Logic and VST Plugins. But we’re in the process of buying more and more analog gear, because we really like the warm sound of it. Not only does it sound better, it’s also a lot more fun to play with real buttons than with a computer.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

02. Hodgson  – Babylon System | JEUDI Records

03. Maxi Mill – Speed Balance Weight (Original Mix)

True or false? Take it Easy once stripped at the Baalsaal club in Hamburg?

“Yeah yeah, that’s correct. It was the Keinemusik night. It’s always fun to hang out with David, Rampa, Adam and Andre and at this night we have had too much vodka and it all ended with me in the DJ booth –  almost naked.”

Do you ever argue about music?

“Of course! There are songs I play in our sets that friso hates and there are songs in Frisos playlist that I hate. It’s the same when we’re in the studio together. We both have our own opinion and we’re straight with each other if there’s anything we don’t like. I believe that’s what our sound is about. That’s the magic formula! Both, Friso and myself have a different taste. And these differences make the Adana Sound what it is.”

It may not be good for image, but the Adana Twins really love…

Take it Easy: “Private time with my friends while we are not touring and of course Hamburg House City.”

Love this quote from you…” It’s like being a pop star, but you’re just doing the same thing you’ve always done, the same as way back when in little bars in Hamburg years ago. Just playing cool tunes and partying like a motherfucker!”

“And it still is like this! We just play and make music we love.”

So you have a drinking competition. Take it Easy is on the Baileys, Friso you are on the red wine. Who is the last man standing?

“It goes like this: Easy with pimps, Friso with vodka soda and Shir Khan with vodka RedBull. Shir Khan is always the last man standing!”

Okay guys, you work together, travel together, party together. Let’s get up close and personal…If you could…

Change 1 thing about each other it would be?

Take it Easy: “I would love to see the day that Friso gives another answer then “Asian food” when a promoter is asking us what kind of food we want before the gig.”

Friso: “I would love to give him my passion for Asian food.”

Throw away 1 record from each other’s collection it would be?

“I would never allow that. I love every record in my collection and every record is a part of my musical journey.”

Congratulate each other on 1 specific skill it would be?

Take it Easy: “I really love Friso’s talent to improve things. He’s very good in instructing people and helping them to bring something to perfection. He was (and still is) one of the best designers I’ve ever met. And I am really happy and thankful to work with him.”

Friso: “I’m very fond of TiE’s unconventional views. He comes up with new ideas that become very strong. Thinking differently can create really big ideas!”

What is the best and worst thing about living in Hamburg?

“The best thing is the summer and the worst thing is the winter.”

And finally, where are some of the big gigs you are looking forward to after you return from your holidays…?

“Definitey Ibiza, DGTL Festival, WMC, Sonar, Loveland, Watergate Berlin, Social Club Paris, ADE in Amsterdam, and our own Adana Night at Ego of course!”
