Arno Cost

The man from Paris continues his Strong journey to the top…

Interview : Dan Prince

Arno Cost returns with a monster! Alongside Norman Doray, their previous onslaught ‘Apocalypse 2014’ frequently featurer in the sets of many house legends, the pair now return to strength with ‘Strong’ featuring a sparkling combo of funked-out bass guitar, drums and synths creating a modern and unique track. With muscular hooks, combined with an anthemic vocal, the two Frenchmen have yet again created the ultimate dancefloor filler. Recently joining Nicky Romero’s management company Protocol, Arno has gone from strength to strength touring the globe and releasing material on some of the world’s most prestigious dance music labels with tracks on Spinnin, Size and Big Beat including ‘Head Up’, ‘Nightventure’, and ‘Lifetime’ – and with massive remixes for artists such as Laidback Luke and David Guetta, Arno Cost is quickly gaining speed. DMCWORLD checks in with da main man…

Hey Arno, welcome back to DMCWORLD…where on the planet can we find you today?

Hey Dan, I’m just back from NYC and at home in Paris right now!”

Congratulations on another tune that is sending shockwaves around the world, this time it’s your collab with Norman Doray that is causing the damage…please talk us through the sound and history of the record…

“Thanks ! We really enjoyed making this track. Norman came in my studio in Paris last year and we started working on a loop. Then this synth loop came out. We were like « wow this is really catchy » so we finished the record within a week. We had to find a good vocal and I had this one which was supposed to be on another record. We tried with Strong, and it fit perfectly!!”

Hilarious video – who is behind it?

“Norman and I had the exact idea of what we wanted: a competition between two guys who are friends but completely different. One is healthy and trains hard and the other one is doping himself, has girls around him all the time etc…Then the bowling idea and the 80s concept came naturally. The director is a talented guy from LA, Andrew Sandler. We had so much fun doing this video!”

“I wanna be strong, I wanna keep breathing, No matter what’s wrong, No matter what baby”. When was the last time you told yourself that in a tricky situation?

“The last 14 hours I had in economy to Bali!!!”

Pete Tong playing it on BBC Radio 1, Steve Angello spinning it at Size in the Park, Nicky Romero at Ultra, hitting The Buzz Chart – what gave the most pleasure?

“Every support we’ve had was a great pleasure, I couldn’t tell which one brought us the most satisfaction. Thanks to these guys who have supported the track since the beginning!”

A big week coming up for you with a very special guest slot at David Guetta’s FMIF at Pacha in Ibiza. Even though a lot of nights are cancelling themselves out with similar line ups, David’s parties are on fire in Ibiza this year! Looking forward to this little soiree?

“Yeah of course, every FMIF night with David is special, always busy and a great atmosphere. What is more, I’m in love with Ibiza. This island is so beautiful…I love going there.”

Give me 3 reasons you love Ibiza…

“The weather, the parties, the beaches…”

The biggest 5 tunes in Arno Cost’s box right now is…?

The Magician – Sunlight

Bastille – Pompei (Audien Remix)

Arno Cost & Norman Doray – Strong

Nicky Romero & Vicetone – Let Me Feel

Don Diablo – Anytime

Best gig of the summer so far and why…?

“Light in Las Vegas with Nicky Romero. It was EDC weekend and bloody packed! The people were jumping everywhere, sending me love. I had such a great time!!”

Tune of the summer…?

“The Magician – ‘Sunlight’.”

Hottest young producer you have seen in 2014…

“Arston.”

A quote from Faithless’s Sister Bliss this week…”I think people will become bored with the stock crude generic sounds of EDM and the artists themselves may be somewhat musically bankrupt (David Guetta even admitted as such in a recent interview) as there is only so much touring you can do before it impacts on studio time and having space to think creatively.” Thoughts on that?

“I agree. People will get tired of all this boring EDM stuff. We need melodies, we need groove and goosebumps. I truly think some “artists” should fire their ghost producers and start learning how to make music themselves instead of touring and making $$$. It would definitely bring more creativity to the scene.”

What is the record that…

…reminds you of your childhood?

Daft Punk – Around The World

…always get you dancing?

David Bowie – Let’s Dance

…reminds you of being broken hearted?

Whitney Houston – Will Always Love You

…you wish you would have made?

Kavinsky – Nightcall

In your opinion, is it possible for someone to make it as a DJ in 2014, without any production behind them?

“Of course not. Or you have to hire a ghost producer like a lot of acts do today unfortunately. But with no music from you (or your ghost), I really don’t think you can pretend to be a “DJ” and tour properly. People need to associate your name with productions, tracks they hear on the radio or see in the playlists of their favorite DJ…”

Best ever festival experience?

“Tomorrowland Mainstage 3 years ago. It was incredible.”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“A new remix for Protocol and 2 new original tracks. I’m so excited!!”
