Audien

Huge new Audacity Tour in conjunction with Insomniac exploding all across the States

Interview by Dan Prince

Nate welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

“Just woke up in Orlando after a show last night at Firestone.  Off to Kansas City shortly, so an Epcot run will have to wait.”

Huge excitement in the Audien household right now as our favourite superstar of electronic music gears up for your first major tour in conjunction with insomniac entitles Audacity. 6 dates hitting all the big boys with San Fran already sold out. You looking forward to it?

“I can’t wait to get out there.  I’ve got lots of new things planned for this tour.  New music.  First time bringing Audien merch on the road.  I’ll be debuting a dope new headphone, the Performer, that I designed with the team at 808 Audio.  Also happy to have my buddy Jenaux along for the ride.”

One of the really interesting things about you sir is that you were born and raised in Mystic in Conneticut – where you still live! You have to travel to Rhode Island every time you fly…what is the biggest headfuck of a trip you have done this year?

“INDIA.  Both in terms of length of trip and culture shock.  The crowds there were fantastic.  It was a special run and I was psyched to partner with Submerge … great team.”

What a year you have had with your remix of ‘Pompeii’…statistically speaking, the track was the most played at EDC and Coachella and in the top 5 at Tommorowland. What really set the tune off was other DJs playing it constantly…who were the first guys to pick it up?

“There were some transformative moments.  Tiesto playing the track at Ultra was perhaps the biggest moment.  Proximity supporting the track on YouTube was key.  Early support from Zedd was great as well.”

Where is the strangest place you have heard it played?

“This is a tough question because my life is pretty much hotel, club, plane, repeat.  But I’ve enjoyed watching some of the further edits, like Slander & Party Thieves extend the track across various types of stages at the festival level.”

I hear Bastille’s Dan Smith couldn’t believe the tune’s reaction at the festivals?

“Dan said that he really felt the impact at Coachella specifically.  He was hanging at the artist catering area and heard the track a couple times within the hour.  In that moment I think he realized we got it right.”

Tell us about your Van Halen ‘Jump’ bootleg, if ever a tune was waiting to be bootlegged, this was it!!!

“Aside from the obvious lyric, it was the power synth chords that attracted me to give it a shot.  My tracks often have that signature uplifting power chord thing (Wayfarer, Iris, Hindsight etc.)…it seemed like a natural fit.” 9

A massive New Years Eve coming up for you, headlining the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino alongside Showtek, Laidback Luke, Porter Robinson, DJ Snake and Bingo Players. A massive fuck off line up dude and you’re sitting pretty at the top! Will you be  doing the midnight slot, and if so, what are you going to spin?

“As far as I know, the midnight slot belongs to my friend Porter.  This show will be insane … you know Insomniac doesn’t hold back.  Great and diverse line up.”

What has been your biggest tune of 2014?

“I’d say that the Pompeii remix really took the cake.  Hindsight and Serotonin were fun releases as well.”

Dude you love your trainers man. How many have you got stacked up and what is your favourite pair today?

“Thanks!  Haven’t taken the time to count…I’m not exactly Kanye but yeah its safe to say I keep a few dozen pairs around. Can’t pick a single favorite pair but as an overall rule I’m in a pretty intimate relationship with Nike.”

Your best gig of 2014?

“Beyond Wonderland and Paradiso come to mind.  Also ASOT Utrecht was a fun moment.”

When we last spoke you admitted one of your most endearing qualities was that you are always buying things and selling them a month later! What is the last thing you flogged real quick?

“Luggage.  Not the sexy answer you were looking for?”

Your best moment of Ibiza this summer?

“I really enjoyed hanging with Arty & Armin at Ushuaia.  I also love playing with Ferry – that guy is the best.  Worst moment, by the way was watching two consecutive flights get cancelled at the Ibiza airport while trying to get to Tomorrowland.”

If you could spend 24 hours in the studio – who would it be with?

“Roger Waters and David Gilmour.  Shouldn’t be a problem, right?”

Who is the best DJ you have played alongside this year?

“Don Diablo.”

What is coming out next from you studio wise?

“I’m hunkered down working on a deluge of original material for ’15.  I promise it will be worth the wait.”

And finally gotta ask…the Pompeii slot machine you noticed in Las Vegas…did you play it and win???

“Haha – I’m more of a tables guy than a slots guy so I didn’t play in the end.”
