Back To Mine with Andrea Frisina

Ten of the best from the Gate Null main man

Oliver Koletzki – Iyewaye
I consider this track a climax. It’s recently out, but it has immediately entered into my top tracks of all time: it’s the perfect example of what I mean by dark/melodic techno.

Kalden Bess – Under her
Got it as promo, I can place it exactly between what I produce / spin around the world and what I listen to at home. It’s a relatively recent release, but I’ve played this masterpiece a lot in clubs and during my free time.

Tube & Berger – Imprint Of Pleasure
Maybe I played it only once in a club in 2013 (I closed a set with this), since it’s not so close to my style, but it’s a masterpiece and always a “pleasure” listening to it. That amazing melody makes it one of the best tracks for me of the latest years.

Oliver Koletzki – Der Mückenschwarm
I bought the vinyl with that funny cover the first day it arrived at the shop in Rome (unfortunately that historical shop is not there anymore). Then it became a hit, but I dug it for a long time when I was so young and people didn’t know the track. Now it’s preserved at home, and it remembers my teens when I re-listen to it.
Ps: I’ve linked the symphonic live in Frankfurt, brilliant project.

Abysm – Future Love
I’ve played this track an infinite number of time in clubs when I was so young, today is in my home’s library helping me remember those times once again.

DJ Koze – Blume der Nacht
Never played this track in a club, since it’s far away from what I spin, but I love the combination of the piano and the minimalistic groove, this is why it’s in my library.

DJ Koze – Burn with Me
A fine example of what I mean about “eclecticism” in electronic music, it’s a brilliant arrangement, amazing is the whole concept behind this masterpiece that I can stop to dig !

Jocelyn Pook – Masked Ball
Pretty dark, it’s the sound track of “Eyes Wide Shut” and it comes from the album “Flood”, the words are a reversed Romanian prayer. Well, I don’t care what it says and why it’s reversed, but I like so much the artistic’s idea of this one.

Sacred Spirit – Ly-O-Lay Ale Loya (The Counterclockwise Circle Dance)
It’s the first track of the album “Chants and Dances of Native Americans”), the main vocal is a sampled Sami’s joik. For my tastes, the mixture of this new age beat and the original vocal is another climax.

Röyksopp – What Else Is There ?
It’s a fine and classic example of dark electronic-rock. This piece has influenced me a lot.

System Of A Down – Toxicity
Maybe it is a bit obvious, but I can’t cut this off from a top10 list. Although it’s another genre, different from what I work, it has influenced a lot my arrangements as well.

Andrea Frisina – Kepler System / Europa Moon EP
(Gate Null Recordings)
The Italian label Gate Null has long been established as a key player in the global techno scene, and their 65th EP is another fine outing from the boss himself, Andrea Frisina.
Frisina has a fine reputation that he has been nurturing for a few years now, and has already had plenty of underground club hits, gigs everywhere from WMC to ADE to clubs and festivals around the globe, and was nominated for the awards from Beatport in 2012. A sound designer, audio engineer and fine MIDI programmer, Andrea’s music regularly gets picked up by the global press and played on Radio 1, Ibiza Global Radio, Rinse FM, on UMEK’s own show and more besides.
The first track here is ‘Kepler System,’ a seriously heavyweight techno cut that has chunky drums and a growing sense of tension in the rising synths. It builds to a dramatic peak before exploding and kicking once again, and is a sure fire main room anthem that will get everyone stuck to the groove.
‘Europa Moon’ is then a steely, white knuckle ride through large scale techno. It has sweeping synths, pads and white noise swooshes that carry you up to a dramatic breakdown. Then drums rattle and distant, alien vocal stabs add a sense of spaced-out paranoia and when it rolls again, the roof will be raised.
This is another firing release from Gate Null and Andrea Frisina that is sure to blow all competition aside.
