Back To Mine with Bufi from Discotexas

After hours grooving…

The Chemical Brothers – Let Forever Be

The Chemical Brothers are one of my biggest influences. Maybe this song is not the most representative of their sound, but it has something hypnotically fascinating on it that caused almost a trauma when I first heard it when I was a teenager.

Apparat – Granular Bastard
First time I heard Apparat some years ago I was like “wow”. His first albums impressed me with all that fx storming and glitching fury coexisting in harmony with sweet melodies and tender chords. That was completely new to me.

This Mortal Coil – Song to the Siren

This is one of the greatest heart-broken songs ever written and This Mortal Coil definetely did the most wrenching recording of it. It is part of “Lost Highway” also, which is one of my favorite movies ever.

Caribou – Hannibal
Dan Snaith is a genius, and this is one of my favorite songs from the last album, “Swim”. I’m so eager to listen to a new album, he is one of those artists that keeps pushing the boundaries of electronic music.

Procol Harum – A Whiter Shade Of Pale
I heard this song on a movie a few years ago (can’t remember which one), and I felt like I knew this song from all my life. I still think it is one of the greatest pieces of music ever done.

The Beatles – A Day In The Life
This is one of the longest and weirdest Beatles songs, and it is not the most popular, but I just love how it reflects the very different characters of Lennon and McCartney as song-writers. It is also very intense.

Manu Chao – Bongo Bong
Clandestino is the best Manu Chao album. It contains a lot of south-american musical culture into a 60 minutes record, made with many weird samples taken from the radio and TV, minimalistic arrangements and repetitive riff´s. This one is my pick.

J.S. Bach – Air on a G string
I cannot leave classical music out of this. Bach is one of my greatest inspirations ever, and this song is one of the greatest he ever did. It also recalls in some way to ‘A Whiter Pale of Shade’ by Procol Harum.

Blur – 1992
I heard the 13 record from Blur like 100 times when I was in middle school. I had a weird idea that some kind of secret message was hidden in the record or in the artwork of the album, and I needed to discover it. This song represents that mystery I’m talking about.

Phillip Glass – Rubric
I heard this one on the radio for the first time, and I just got the word “Glass” when the radio speaker announced the name of the song. It was back in the 2K’s, when internet wasn’t what it is today, so it took me some time to discover who was Philip Glass, and what was the name of that intense and repetitive song with saxophones and keyboards that sounds like synthesizers.

Hot on the heels of the latest Moullinex and Jesse Oliver EP, Discotexas is ready to unleash its new EP, this time from Bufi, AKA Mateo González Bufi, a producer from Mexico leading a whole new wave of music makers from South America. Bufi has previously released on labels like Kitsune, Electrique Music and Tigers on a Leash and this EP is inspired by old school producers like Adonis, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins as well as contemporaries such as Daphni and Jimmy Edgar. Up first is ‘Salvaje’, a jittery and playful track that bounces rich drums, squelchy percussion and thin pads off each other as diva vocal yelps jump out from behind. A Mexican voice speaks over the top of the tune and it eventually explodes into a nicely driven jam that is deep and delicious. Next track ’I Call You’ is “an ironic remark about the terrible cell phone service we have in Mexico” says Bufi himself. This one is a classy bit of colourful disco house that builds in layers to a considered and uplifting peak with crisp chords, sheet metal percussion and vibes aplenty. Finally, “Papers” is a more progressive jam that kicks off with dark bass and then drives the listener into a heady harmonic climax. It’s wild and unpredictable and is made from only the freshest components as it thumps its way into the dead of night. This is fresh and arresting house music as ever from Discotexas, and as a result it is sure to propel Bufi to the next level of his career.
