Back To Mine with Martin Lewis (Monoklo/Holic Trax)

After hours grooving…

Mobb Deep – Shook Ones Part 2
Classic song from 1995. Maybe the best year in Hiphop. Still love it, it´s just timeless and dope. Puts me in a good mood. Always great to listen to some nice hip hop beats because making House Music but listening to only House Music is like committing incest.

Rhythm & Sound feat. Willi Williams – See Mi Yah
I just love Rhythm & Sound, especially all the Burial Mixes, so good and laid-back. I have the LPs at home and often put them on to relax and reflect.

Cornell Campell – Hard Time
This track was introduced to me by my good friend “Tek Taim” many years ago. It´s so full of energy and spreads good vibes. I listen to that often at home. The song starts so simple but how it grows with the bassline, the drums, the modulated synthesizer, just incredible.

Thievery Corporation – Shaolin Satellite
That track I first listened to on the Kruder & Dorfmeister DJ Kicks LP in 1996. Still great and energetic. Just love the simple “one two” sample, the breakbeat and the wonderful chords. After 20 years I still get goosebumps.

Johnny Nash – I Can See Clearly Now
This 70s funk track makes me feel confident. I have everything I need and and I know there is no reason to be unhappy. I just love the 70s, from that decade I still sample a lot of records.

Bruce Springsteen – Dancing in the Dark
Still getting a goose flesh on that track. Throws me back into my teenager years, when I played in a rock band, every time I hear it. Just makes me feel good.

Four Tet – Plastic People
Deep and huge track by one of my favourite producers out there. Always listen to it when I sit on the computer and doing stuff.

The Bias Project – The Valley (Original Chicago Mix)
I love this Chicago House track from the early 90s because of the marvelous “underground in the valley” vocals and the simple bells melody. I just can identify 100% with it.

Azad – Kopf hoch (Bazzazian Mix)
Some deep German Rap. This track has one of the most powerful and deepest lyrics I know, still getting goosebumps.

High Contrast – Return of Forever
Sometimes I love to listen to drum´n´bass at home. This track with its powerful brass and amazing bassline, so fresh and superb. Still gives me goosebumps and an energy flash.

Martin Lewis – Monoklo 2 (Holic Trax)

Monoklo is a new sub label of Holic Trax that focuses on darker, deeper techno and house sounds, away from the more groovy and soulful offerings of the well established main label. After the success of the first release by Ivan Iacobucci, which saw support from the likes of Arpiar, Vidionquest & Laurent, the label now enlists Martin Lewis for three hot tracks featuring a remix from label boss man and Japanese don Tomoki Tamura. Lewis is a Berlin based DJ and live set specialist who has been collecting vinyl all his life. He blends together his life’s worth of influences into off kilter dance music that has impressed those who matter. It comes on labels like Exploited and Hollic Trax as well as Freebase Records and this newest release is the latest in a long line of success for the man. No nonsense opener ‘The Wax’ is a supple, rubbery roller with sparse stabs accompanying the infectious groove. Bubbly and restless and littered with odd voices and scurrying little bacterial sounds, it is a fun yet functional way to kick off the EP. The brilliantly dream like ‘Poetry’ then sinks down into a more warming and human groove, with smeared synths bringing colour and heat to a loose house groove. The final excellent original is ‘Drumcatch,’ which is a choppy techno track with stormy solar winds and reflective hi hats glistening above a jumbled drum line. There are some old school, rave signifiers along the way that help make it all the more charming, and this is the track that Tomoki Tamura also remixes. His version is stripped right back to a suggestive, infectious final groove with feather light percussion, skewed chords and involving sub bass that laps at the heels of the track. This new sub label is as fresh as exciting as Holic Trax itself yet offers something slightly different for DJs and dancers everywhere.
