Back to Mine with Whitesquare

After hours grooving…

01. Dean Blunt – ‘The Narcissist ft. Inga Copeland
This is one of my favourite of the last few years, love that piano sample in it. Loved it so much I actually did a remix version to play in clubs.

02. The Gaslamp Killer – Nissim
Love this vibes on this record, and how it starts building up slowly with this (Turkish?) melody.

03. Ahmad Jamal – I Love Music
This is the original track where NAS sampled, “The World Is Yours” one of my all time favourite Hip Hop song ever.

04. Visioneers – Runnin
The Visioneer’s on the Pharcyde’s amazing track “Running” one of my favourite Pharcyde songs all play in a jazz key.

05. Pete Rock – A Little Soul
Pete Rock… Pete rocks.

06. Tokimonsta – Sweet Day
So much chill beats from Tokimonsta, gotta love this one.

07. Balam Acab – See Birds
This is the kind of stuff I like to chill to. Discovered this track a few years ago at a club here in Rome – played by some brat DJ from LA that came here for a vacation.

08. Rhythm & Sound & Cornel Campbell – King In My Empire
Hypnotic.

09. Ricardo Villalobos – Dexter (Two Lone Swordsmen Mix)
The Two Lone Swordsmen remixing villalobos. With so much class and style.

10. A Tale Of Two Sisters – Soundtrack – 15. ‘Epilogue’
This piano riff gets me every time. While watching the movie for the first time and listen to this I right away searched for the soundtrack. Amazing work.

Whitesquare ‘Unfaithful EP’ (Toy Tonics)
Toy Tonics comes Whitesquare with a stunning second EP on Toy Tonics, an up and coming talent with a few releases on Skint, Noir and Ministry Of Sound to his name, Whitesquare’s last EP, Lost, was championed by the likes of Tim Sweeney, Four Tet, DJ Sneak and many others. Opening track ‘Unfaithful’ is a down low, always simmering but never boiling, deep house track that has sandy, muffled drums and percussion shuffling along beneath a fat and somber bassline. It’s no frills, knowingly crafted stuff that slowly but surely casts you under its spell then keeps you there. Next cut ‘Anyway’ is a much busier affair, the drums are more forceful and barreling, with hits and snare rolls peeling off in all directions and withering alien synths getting lost in the middle of it all. The vibe switches to a melancholic, romantic one, though, when some lightly dangled ivories come into the track and everything else fades away to allow them to do their thing. When the drums land once more, muffled but emotive vocal acrobatics also join the fray and the cumulative effect is one of heartfelt house loveliness. Lastly, ‘Shades’ is another great offering that combines physical drums with emotive keys and a real sense of sadness. You’ll want to dance, but your thoughts will also turn inwards to sadder times. Rich and colourful, inventive and authentic, it’s a great way to close what is another accomplished EP.
