Chuckie

The showman of the Dutch dancefloor gets ready for his brand new London residency

Interview : Rob Chadwick

Chuckie welcome back to DMCWORLD, where in the world are you today?

Hey, I’m in Europe at the moment, on a three week European tour with upcoming gigs in France, UK, Portugal, Spain and The Netherlands. I should be home resting because I just got back from my Australia and South America tour and also the crazy hectic Miami Music Week.”

True…what a week you’ve just had in Miami – your best yet in our opinion. Five great parties with some monster guests, what were some of your highlights?

“It was an amazing week for sure! One of my highlights was definitely when Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike visited me on my “Chuckie and Friends” show at the Shelborne pool party. I know these guys for ages and I’m so happy to see them being successful right now. Also a big honour for me to share the stage with Deorro. In my opinion, he’s the next big thing!”

What was your opinion on the deadmau5/Martin Garrix ‘Animals’ stunt at Ultra? Pretty cool right?

“I thought it was awesome! You got to love Deadmau5 for not caring at all. I don’t know if he does it on purpose but he definitely knows how to have all social media channels talking about him. What I really think is cool is the fact that he shows that we shouldn’t take it all too serious and that it’s ok to crack a joke every now and then.”

Record of the week?

”I think the Miami Music Week was all about taking selfies so obviously it was “The Chainsmokers – Selfie”. Not my personal favourite record…but definitely the best gimmick in a while!”

Massive news for the UK has been revealed with your brand new residency at Fire which launches on April 12th with Danny Howard, Audio Society and Skyhigh. What are your plans for this exciting new Dirty Dutch residency?

“The plan is to just some of the artists I musically admire the most. In the past I had guys like Sub Focus, Zane Lowe and KnifeParty as special guests. I will continue to invite some of the best artists around. I’m looking forward to work with Danny Howard, he’s a beast behind the turntables.

What are some of the big tunes you are hammering out right now?

“I’m working on two tracks with the amazing producer Steve Mac, such a talented guy…he has sold over 80 million records and produced albums for people like Susan Boyle and Westlife. For one of the records we’re thinking about a collaboration with Jason Derulo. Next to those vocal records i’m working on some really cool club tracks. I’m trying to sample my own voice for most of these records. It’s kind of my new thing.”

How is it going over in Las Vegas at Marquee, is the scene in sin city showing any signs of slowing down?

“Las Vegas is wild as always, I really don’t think it will ever slow down because it was already wild even before electronic music DJs got their residencies there. I mean people will always go to Las Vegas to spend money so I don’t see any signs of it slowing down!”

We cannot have an interview with you without mentioning the tragic loss of Frankie Knuckles this week. What are your memories of this giant of dance music…?

“Well, Frankie Knuckles was one of the guys that inspired me and I think millions others. He’s the reason why we call it “House Music”. Records like “Cold world”, “Whistle Song” are classics. It’s sad that we lost such a legend but through house music his legacy will always be there.”

It must have been quite an emotional trip for you returning to the country of your birth earlier this month…Suriname in South America looked mental?

“It was a emotional trip for real. When I played on the Independence Square in Paramaribo (capital city of Suriname) in front of 20.000 people I got a little emotional because I was proud that I was able to do a two and half hour electronic music set in a country where that music wasn’t even popular 5 years ago.”

What are your plans for Ibiza this summer?

“I have got a lot of offers to play at different clubs but I’m still not sure what I want to do…”

Loving the Nike football shirts they sent you last week…what is the best freebie you have ever received?

“The best freebie I ever got is that TW Steel watch with 750 real diamonds in it. Not because it got diamonds but because I got it from the CEO of the company Jordy Koblenz, an entrepreneur I admire a lot.”

Who are some of the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to right now?

“Deorro, Knife Party, DeadMau5, Gregori Klosman and Hardwell.”

A question from your Facebook I am going to ask you…’When was the last time you got so drunk you promised you would never drink again?’

“I was 21 and I drank like 9 Bacardi/coke long glasses in less than an hour. You can obviously understand that it all went wrong that night, hahaha!”

And finally what is coming out next from you studio wise…?

“Probably some club records, I have like 5 records ready to go but I can’t decide which one to release first, so I will play these records out first and see which record gets the best crowd reaction…to be continued…”
