The album everyone is raving about explodes again with ‘Fair Game’…goosebumps guaranteed

As their forthcoming album lands a Beatport #1 straight out of the gate, ‘Start To Feel’ is busily lining up for its second TKO. To describe new anthem ‘Fair Game’ as ‘talked-about’ would be like calling the World Cup ‘not a bad tournament’! The track has been keeping the forum wires the whitest type of hot since it got its ID track debut during the ASOT650 event run. ‘Fair Game’ finds Nic & Bossi in a first time team-up with Ørjan Nilsen – one of the foremost authorities on the art of production smashing dance floors. Looking for sweetly sung songs, soulful grooves and soothing tempos? Better look somewhere else entirely! After the uplifting vocal anthemia of the Eric Lumiere-vocalled ‘Falling Back’, Nic & Bossi switch frequencies to reap full & thunderous instrumental havoc through ‘Fair Game’s complexly programmed fire and brimstone synthesis. From its stridently echoing, bleepy intro, the trio waste zero time in packing warping sweeps and cutting-edge tech FX around heavily set drums. Sonically punch packing, its dazzlingly filtered, phased whoops, shouts and razor-wire synths will be shredding dancefloors from here to Ibiza close. The boys are back in town.

Interview : Dan Prince

Nic, Bossi welcome to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

“Thank you guys! We just returned home to LA and Vegas after some shows in South America, so home fortunately for a few days and next upcoming gigs in Asia.”

Well you have smashed it yet again with your music, this time you have the world and our very own Buzz Chart posse going mental to the big room trancer ‘Fair Game’ produced alongside Orjan Nilsen and taken from the new album. Please talk us through the sound and history of third particular track…

“What can we say, ‘Fair Game’ seems to be one of these few tracks that trance and EDM DJs both seem to be playing, it seems to bring both worlds together, catchy melody, nice break…”

When I told Guy Garret at Buzz HQ I was interviewing you today he exclaimed…”the record is sort of an old skool/nu school battle of the producers…ask the guys who’s the boss though?” – so guys, who was the boss in this track?!?!!

“Ha ha – we think the track is the boss itself! Rocking every dancefloor from day one, as said getting support both from EDM and trance DJs…seems Orjan and ourselves bossed us till we reached our best.”

What we would like to get across through our new album ‘Start To Feel’ is that electronic music doesn’t need to always start and stop at the drop. It doesn’t have to be all about that 60 seconds.” Please discuss…

“First of all, talking about music is actually senseless. People’s feeling about the same piece of music often are completely different…but lets try. What we wanted to put out is that we were a bit tired of all these tracks that really just focus on these few seconds, the so called drop to let people go wild a bit, and then that’s it. We want our music to tell a more complete story, be a bit more meaningful, transport more emotions, more positive vibes than most of these in our eyes, short term thinking 2014 Beatport tracks do…music that say in 2020 will be all but forgotten. On the other side, we hope that our music has a bit of a longer life span, is a bit more meaningful and still will be requested or simply still be listened to from our fans, bring good memories, as our early stuff still does get requested now too.”

You kick start the ‘Start To Feel’ North America Tour on July 4th in Calgary at the excellent Flames Central. Are there any new clubs you’ll be hitting in the States or are they all tried and tested hotspots?

“It’s a good mixture of both. There is big clubs and arenas like for example Flames Central or the Palladium In LA we have played several times, other ones are new on the agenda and we are looking forward to give our debut there. In general we are very excited as the August stretch of the tour will be our first big bus tour, a new experience for us, some real rock n roll touring style, lol…”

Come on lads be brave…what is your favourite track from the album and why?

“’Like a mother, we won’t put one of her kids over the others…it’s the same with our music. Every song is basically our baby, but if we can put one track out that is our song of the hearts, maybe a track that might not get a lot of recognition as it’s not working on dancefloors and will not be a single but that we still love a lot, we would recommend listen to ‘No One Can Touch You Now’ feat. Mike Schmidt. Give it a listen…”

Your fan base is immense. When you announced you would be appearing on the mighty A State Of Trance show this week and asked for questions from your fans from around the world, people in Hawaii, Guatemala, Sofia, Beirut and Liverpool were amongst the many, many places where your followers sent in questions from. In our opinion trance is the REAL global sound of dance music, it touches everyone’s hearts right?

“You put it exactly right Dan. Trance sure is not for everyone, BUT if you understand Trance you are not simply a music consumer…you LOVE your Trance and everything around it. The scene know about the DJs, you are simply closer to it as the music in our opinion gets closer to the listener. It’s a more intimate kind of feel than most other genres of music, at least this it how it is for us…”

Where is the strangest place anywhere in the world you have heard your music being played. Most producers have heard their stuff in weird places like barbers, shopping malls or in bumpy taxis…

“Exactly. When you are in a cab somewhere 5000 miles from home and having problems communicating with the driver due to language barriers and suddenly he is blasting out one of your songs without knowing who you are…def! A funny but also a very touching moment…showing again how much music brings us all together as a universal language.”

In the studio we want to create tracks with real life expectancy. We want to make ‘years-from-now’ music, where every time you come back to a track, you hear something new, something different, something more than you caught the last time.” When was the last time a tune from another producer falls into that category?

“We have this pretty often with tracks from Andrew Bayer to be hones He for us with nearly every production manages to bring something cool to the table, hitting baselines but always a touching breakdown on top. Having his signature sound without ever getting boring, is really spectacular.”

Loads of excited comments on your Facebook page this last week concerning Germany and their excellent start to the World Cup. Toni Kroos looks on form huh? You think you’re going to lift the trophy?

“Brazil playing at home and with the climate advantage is main favorite for us, but of course we wish Germany somehow gets through. But no matter what, good to see our team playing a good kind of football and finally getting credits for not just getting through…but playing good attractive football too.”

What is the 1 festival you cannot wait for this summer?

“We will play Creamfields in the UK for the first time! Definitely one we are looking forward to! Let’s hope we won’t need any rubber boots if the UK summer lets us down…”

Best ever festival moment?

“Still 2002 Trance Energy. A magical moment, the biggest crowd ever for us by then, unforgettable!”

What is the record that…

…always reminds you of your childhood?

“’Everything’ by the Police.”

…reminds you of having your heart broken?

“George Michael…’Careless Whisper’.”

…will ALWAYS gets you dancing?

“Hmmm, maybe ‘Groove Jet’ from Spiller. A perfect track that works in clubs, weddings, birthday parties, or at home cooking, lol.”

…you wish you had made yourself?

“Oh, there are so many perfect pieces of musical art out there, it is so hard to say. Maybe ‘Homework’ – the first Daft Punk album…a simply groundbreaking record in our eyes.”

What is next on the agenda for Wake Your Mind Records?

“We have signed some very exciting record from Steve Brian that we cannot wait to share, simply a great song we enjoy playing out for a while already, stay tuned…”

Gotta ask guys, is this album your finest piece of production to date?

“To be honest, we are always very critical with ourselves. But yes, we do think ‘Start To Feel’ is our best album to date indeed. We are very pleased with it and hope our fans and new fans hopefully in the making will agree…”

And finally, Mixmag described the album as “fearless, panoramic and astonishing”. What are the 3 words you would use to describe it…?

“We are not as eloquent as these fine colleagues of yours! As previously mentioned, we are simply happy with the final result and we would struggle a bit to put it into three words. How is this for an idea…what if your readers give their own 3 words and tweet us to @cosmicgate. The best ones will get a retweet or maybe a little reward…”
