Curbi & Bougenvilla

World exclusive interview with the superstars of the Spinnin’ sound

Interview by Dan Prince

Guys a big welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

Bougenvilla: Straight Outta Rotterdam!

Curbi: Straight Outta, my bedroom…

What was the last piece of music you were listening to before this interview?

Jeremy: Thomas Bergersen – ‘That’s A Wrap’, I absolutely love it. I’ve listened to this a million times already and it doesn’t get boring.

Shefida: Playing FIFA at the moment, listening Kygo – ‘Here For You’, amazing track filled with so much emotion.

Curbi: Noisia, Mefjus & Hybris – ‘Reptilians’.. this one is super phat! Love the syntheses so much.

Amazing new tune from you guys hitting the No. 1 spot on the world famous Buzz Chart – please talk us through the sound and history of ‘Butterfly Effect’…

‘Butterfly Effect’ was born during the Spinnin’ & MusicAllStars’ Writing Camp in February. We produced this track in all silence so we could get the buzz as big and surprising as possible. We just wanted to make a track outside our comfort zone…and this is it. We are happy with the results.

Teaser :

Did you all know immediately you were sitting on something huge?

Actually Shefida is the reason we kept working on this track (thank you Shefida). We all loved it, but Jeremy & Toby just thought it was too out of the box, you know? It was just meant to be like this.

The track has been played and supported by the likes of Calvin Harris, Tiesto and Axwell…who are the names you two always look for on release to see if they like your new tune?

Tiësto & Afrojack – our childhood heroes…no words needed.

What are your thoughts on the whole butterfly effect theories…for instance a flutter of a butterfly’s wings can cause a hurricane on the other side of the world, right vs left, noon vs midnight etc.?

The track is actually named after those movies with Ashton Kutcher. We called this track ‘Butterfly Effect’ because apparently something so small can turn things upside down. For instance: it all started with just the drop, which was a bit dull and dry, but the idea was there. We didn’t expect this track to come out as different from anything else as it is now.

Curbi – this is your third Buzz No. 1 – in only 6 months! What the fuck have you been taking dude, you are on fire!!!!!

Things are escalating way quicker than I could have ever imagined haha. I’m just so grateful of all the support I’ve been getting recently…thank youuuu!

Curbi, I live in Ibiza and was down the front for Martin Solveig’s night at Pacha last week…you looked to be enjoying yourself up there? A big night…

It’s such a good vibe, and with everyone one there supporting eachother, it really shows what dance music is about, pure magic. It’s super cool to play the techy/housier stuff too, enjoyed that a lot. Really thankful to Martin for inviting me!

Your anthem of the summer?

Honestly, there’s been too many good to tracks this summer.. cannot choose!

Shefida and Jeremy…ADE is just around the corner, where can we catch Bougenvilla at this year’s event?

Among others, we play at OH1OH, the Slam FM Mix Marathon and the ‘Strictly Own’ sound party by Vato Gonzalez.

Guys, as natives of Rotterdam you of course know, but for the thousands of people reading this who haven’t ever been to ADE, can you try and explain just why these few days in Amsterdam are so important for the dance music world…

It’s one big chemistry from A to Z within the dance scene. People you usually probably only speak online, will be there in real life to meet. It’s the global dance family gathering, packed within five days of meetings and just as many nights of partying.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend, please give us a few words on each…

1. Chocolate Puma & Tommie Sunshine feat. DJ Funk – ‘Scrub The Ground’.

Oh Lord have mercy, we played this one during our Bougenvilla b2b Curbi set last weekend and it was FAT, still speechless…

2. Marc Benjamin x Lady Bee – ‘Bodyrocks (Instrumental)’.

Club-ready rework of the original, totally in love with this one.

3. Joe Stone & Daser – ‘Freak (And You Know It) [Original Mix]’

The break is so on, followed by an outstandingly groovy drop.

4. Watermät & TAI – ‘All My Love (Frequencies) [Mike Mago Remix]’

Tthe drop is soooo smooth.

5. ID – ID

This is probably the biggest.

So how does it work in the studio with you three – who takes care of what musically?

Usually, Toby (Curbi) and Jeremy (Bougenvilla) are the ones who focus on the musical part and Shefida (Bougenvilla) is the one who comes up with the crazy ideas. But in the case of ‘Butterfly Effect’, we all came up with a big idea each which made it super easy to combine together. It just fit so well! With blood, sweat and tears, during this six month proces Jeremy and Toby worked for nights and days via Skype, just to make this track as it is now. The weirdest ideas came out of this. But luckily Shefida was there in the end to finetune the mixdown and filter all the craziness to something credible.

Any big arguments behind closed doors about music?

Too bad, the doors are closed.

An up and coming producer/DJ to watch out for in 2016?

Curbi: Hmmm, there’s a few people I’ve been keeping an eye on recently.. But I think ‘Niko the Kid’ is someone to watch out for. His productions are tight!

Bougenvilla: Novka, be prepared, these guys are dangerous!

And finally, what is coming out next from you all studio wise?

Bougenvilla: We’re slaying and fine tuning lots of tracks at the moment.

Curbi: +1 to what Bougz said.

Thanks guys, appreciate your time.

You’re welcome, it was a pleasure!
