David Morales

WORLD EXCLUSIVE interview with the Def Mix legend as he returns with an anthem

Def Mix’s David Morales is considered by many to be one of the first true superstar DJ’s. Thanks to his remix/production work Morales was among the first DJs to actively tour the world. David is also known as one of the most versatile DJs currently on the scene, whether it is playing a pool party in Miami as one of the “Legends of House”, DJing in an edgy European club or an event geared to a predominately gay crowd, Morales is always at home behind the decks. David launched his Red Zone guise in the 90’s as an outlet for his more techier and electronic sounds. Regular vocal cohort Keith Anthony Fluitt takes his turn at front of stage and delivers a mighty vocal force on new single “Everybody Get Up!”, this is underpinned by Red Zone’s profound musical energy, laced with eerie snyth washes and moody acid tinged bass, ripe for the peak hours. Mr Morales also delivers a feel-good piano drenched Club Mix, along with a slab of percussive magic on his Momo Tek Dub, transporting the track into a different stratosphere. Dan Prince checks in…

David a huge welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

Hey Dan, on tour somewhere in Europe.

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after jumping out of bed?

It was “So Good” by Landr featuring Melissa Morgan.

It was great seeing you in Ibiza last week rocking the Amante Closing Party, you have fun?

Yes I had a lot of fun. This is my second year in a row where I played at the closing of Amante. To me it’s thee best closing party of Ibiza.

How was the rest of the summer for you on the white islehouse music is back on the island thank the lord!

I’ve only been on the island 3 times this past summer. Thanks to Defected for Glitterbox @ Space. It was all about House music.

So big news for you right now with a brand new red zone single coming our way on Def Mix next week, please talk us through the sound and history of ‘Everybody Get Up’…

Well it’s really funny how “Everybody Get Up” came about. I was in the studio in NY recording backgrounds for my last record with Janice Robinson. I did my own re-edit of “We Are Family” and decided to take it a step further and have the singers re-sing the topline for me. Then we added the top line “Everybody Get Up” and realized that I had a new song. Then I changed the music and had Keith Anthony Fluitt sing lead vocal. I couldn’t release the original concept because of sample clearance but the Red Zone mix came out so good that I just with that mix as the original.

The track comes with some serious mixes – why did you choose these guys in particular?

Well between myself and Hector we chose who should mix it. I’m really not into in having 10 remixes of a record. But I was very happy with what the other boys have done.

We loved the video for ‘Everybody Get Up’ filmed at the Ministry of Sound and Phonica. You closed the video by saying ‘the hills have eyes’…what were you referring to?

The Hills Have Eyes is an old cult horror film. It was just a moment, lol. Check the video here…

We had the pleasure of interviewing your close friend Judy Weinstein a couple of months ago. She was reminiscing about Friday nights back in the day at the office when all of New York’s DJs would come down to the Record Pool to pick up their new records and chat. What are your memories of those early days…

They were great times. We had a community of DJs, we talked and shared music all the time. It was just like going to a record store except that it was a store for promos.

You have a day off from making and spinning music. What would be the perfect morning, noon and night…?

Breakfast, a movie, then the gym for an hour then back home to watch a movie.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend…

– “Grown Man Cry” Aphrohead.

This is my fav track of the moment. Carl Craig totally wrecked this track for points. It’s a crazy relentless groove.

– “Everybody Get Up”

Well it’s my record and it’s hott hahaha…

– “You Are Everything” Louie Vega starring Jocelyn Brown.

What can I say about these 2 legends? Put them together and it’s pure magic. The song says it all.

– “By Faith” Ce Ce Rogers.

This is a great spiritual house track. Deep vibe with an explosive chorus to take you over the top.

– “Macarthur Park” Tracy Hamlin.

I’m an old Disco head and this was always one of my Donna Summer classics.  DJ Spen & Tommy Davis totally brought this into the now. If Disco House is your flavor then you need to get on this.

Some of the memorable parties of 2015 that you rocked?

My birthday at Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos is always top. Cariocas Beach Club in Athens, Bolivar Beach Club in Athens, The Amante Closing, the Kings Of House NYC at the Future Festival in Torino, the Def Mix party at Ministry Of Sound…

What is coming out next from you studio wise…?

I have many things in the pipeline. I’m in the studio zone these days. The next remix of mine is Louie Vega’s “You Are Everything” starring Jocelyn Brown.

And finally, as your home country continues to rock to the dance music sound with clubbers now exploring new genres ever weekend…what is your opinion of America and the dancefloor as we head into 2016…?

America is always late lol….all I can say is that it’s great to see NY happening again.
