Dosem

A huge year under way for the incredible Spanish tech house superstar

Interview by Dan Prince

Marc a massive welcome back to DMCWORLD. Where in the world are you today?

“It’s a pleasure! I’m in Girona, my hometown.”

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning when you clambered out of bed?

“Today I went straight to the studio to mix a new track I’m finishing. Morning is a great time to do mixing stuff, as you have the ears rested.”

Well what a year you have in front of you dude! A great way to kick off proceedings with a month at the top of the Deep House chart with your remix of ‘All I Want’…please talk us through your rework…

“The first time I heard the original song I knew exactly what to do with the main elements. So the remix came out very quickly. Then it took a couple of weeks for me to finish the details and looking for a perfect sounding mix. My intention was to mix my kind of techno sound with something more deep and elegant.”

Another mix causing serious dancefloor damage right now comes in the form of your mix of Mark Fanciulli’s ‘Seal of Approval’. How did you approach this piece of production?

“I was listening to the promos of that EP with Coyu and we spoke about the possibility of doing a remix with a very different style from the original. At first I started focusing on the beats and the bassline, to give it a different character, then I added some elements of the original and started playing with everything in my studio.”

You hail from Girona, a fascinating city steeped in techno history. How old were you when you started to love and understand these sounds…?

“I discovered Techno a bit “late”. I was already about 20 years old. But I got into electronic music much earlier, so I was already half way there. I have always been a big fan of movie soundtracks that contain synth elements like “Vangelis – Blade Runner” and stuff like that. Afterwards I started to listen to a lot of Soul, R&B, Big Beat…and finally Techno and House. But I don’t have a big vinyl collection…I was more into album-CDs, computer software and hardware to make music. It wasn’t my plan to make music to dance to at the beginning; it was just something to experiment with for fun.”

What were your first steps into the music industry?

“I started doing events with friends where I would DJ. A few of those events were very successful, so I was offered a residency at an important club in my city and from there I began to get in touch with other DJs and promoters of the local scene. I was also doing warm-ups for international artists, so I met Technasia, who offered me a contract to release an album in SINO.”

What did your family think of your choice of career?

“That was a long time ago… they knew music was one of my biggest passions in life so of course they understood and respected my choice.”

How important to you as an artist not to be pigeonholed to one scene?

“That’s essential for me. I like to challenge myself constantly. Experiment, fail, learn, evolve, etc. We’re not robots… we have feelings, we commit mistakes and learn from them… sometimes we feel something is good and the day after we realize it’s not. I like all kinds of music: Techno, House, Breaks, Ambient and Dub stuff, Hip Hop, R&B, Funky, Soul music, etc. Why should I limit myself to just one direction? No way, it is not in my character. We only have one life and I want to take the most out of it, be creative and push myself to go out of the comfort zone all the time.”

Spain is obviously going through many changes now with the huge financial crash the country is experiencing. How has this affected the clubs and festivals?

“Yes definitely it’s a really hard time. Some important clubs and festivals have had to reinvent themselves and we’ve got many promoters that had to stop for a while and reopen with a new concept. We have many new young promoters with a fresh vision doing very cool parties at the moment, so its good to see the scene beginning to regenerate itself from within.”

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend…please give us a few words on each…

Feel Good Now – Mark Knight…pure party track, absolutely massive groove.

Daze Shade – Stefano Noferini, Leonardo Gonnelli…funky tech house by two great artists.

Intervention – Dale Howard…fantastic track, love the lead melody and the bassline.

I’ll Be Working – BDJ, Hurle…really cool grooves and vocals.

Photon – Deetron…one of the best producers out there, a beautiful track full of soulful substance.

BPM in Mexico was yet again incredible. What were some of the highlights for you?

I only attended two parties: Stereo Productions, where I played, and Ants. I didn’t have time for more because I had to leave for Europe. I want to be back next year and spend more time in Playa del Carmen. What a beautiful place, the people are very charming. I loved it.”

Some producers you are into at the moment?

“I have many friends from my country that are rocking it at the moment, I’m very proud of our scene. We have great producers like Uner, Coyu, Edu Imbernon, Ramiro López, Henry Saiz, Marc Marzenit… and many more!”

A celebrity you would not want to get stuck in a lift with?

Honestly I don’t have anything against anyone in particular. I take people as they come!”

Nice! When was the last time you pressed rewind and listened to a track over again because it was so damned good?

“Check out this track: “To Heal” by Underworld…”

Tell us 3 bucket list adventures you wanna do in your lifetime?

“See the aurora borealis in person; visit New Zealand, the Mayan pyramids, Tibet, South Africa, Easter Island…sorry I can’t mention only 3!”

A tune nestling in your set that just won’t go away from last year?

“Coyu “Balls”… that groove!”

What is the 1 date in your DJ diary you cannot wait for!

“In the coming months I have my debut at Miami Music Week and We Are FSTVL, I’m really looking forward to it.”

An up and coming producer we should watch out for in 2015…

“Adrian Hour, Ramiro López, Manu Sánchez and One D.”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise…

I’m releasing a new Suara “Ready EP” that contains two tracks I’ve been playing a lot in my sets. Also remixes for Uto Karem and Robert Babicz.”
