‘Turn It Around’ – causing mayhem on the dancefloors around the world

Interview by Dan Prince

Steve, Victor welcome to DMCWORLD…where on planet earth are you today?

“Home. In our bed – having a break for two weeks to make music in the studio after the summer madness!”

A really exciting week for you with the release of your brand new single ‘Turn It Around’ – please talk us through the sound and history of the track…

Originally we made the track in October 2013 after our track ‘Redux’ was released on Spinnin’. We were quite happy with the result at the time but it was not the moment to release it back then. As we saw the music-style changing this summer from the hard EDM sound back to the more melodic progressive sound we re-produced ‘Turn it Around’ to the sound of today. We are very happy with what it is now!”

When was the last time you had a big fall out over music?

“Pretty much after Swedish House Mafia quit. The sound became more harder and about hard drops and simple melodies. When that period was at it’s peak last year it was hard for us to come around. Luckily people want more in a track again and melodies are important again. So that is a big relief.”

Ah – glad you touched on this subject. We love your outspoken comments on the state of the EDM scene. “Passion, emotion and sexiness was missing last year. It’s all down to the big DJs to experiment again and bring the balance back.” So where is the music heading over the next 12 months?

Back to more melodies, back to more groove. Back to more content and tune that you can play years from now and people remember. Most songs released this year are maybe nice to listen to a couple of times, but next year no one will know those tunes any more. Music is gonna be more timeless. We hope.”

Steve – how did you conquer your stage fright fear?

I have a few very good friends that always believed in me and supported me. Whenever I was nervous and thought I was gonna fuck up they would say that I have nothing to worry about and that I’ve got this…”

That’s cool! We are hooked on your radio show, who has been your favourite guest on your Visionary?

“They are all special to be honest Dan, but to support our Duchies: Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano, Firebeatz and Sander van Doorn.”

You have 24 hours in a studio and you can either invite Zedd or Axwell. Who’d ya pick?

Tough one. I think Steve would pick Axwell. He is our all time favorite.”

True or false : You have pet pigeons who sleep on a bed of cigarettes?

Haha! A pigeon built a nest in our Mexican grill which we’ve been using as an ashtray these past 4 months! So true!”

It was the annual DJ Top100 Poll this month, and boy has it come in for some criticism yet again:  “It is not a DJ contest it is a producer contest”, “it is all about buying votes”,  “it is all about how big your PR machine is these days”, “there are too many genres of DJs nowadays and unfair on the real DJs” etc. etc. – just some of the comments flying around. What is your take on what was once a real important part of our club culture?

All that has been said is true. It’s about investing in promotion and at the same time also having the right track(s) at the right moment. And it’s about a certain small period taken in a DJ/producer’s career. In our opinion the list is irrelevant of who is a good producer/DJ. Some guys made it to a certain level because they are really good because they deliver quality music written by their own hand. They deserve to be there. Unfortunately also a lot of people make it to a certain level because of their ghost producers and lots of invested money for promotion. They shouldn’t be there. So you the list is irrelevant of who is better. Who is the most popular, yess. To be honest, we would like to be in it for the sake of that a lot of promoters look at this list. For us its all about making music, and playing it out in front of a live audience. If that brings us, with or without promotion into the DJ mag TOP100, then we would be very happy

What are the big 3 records in your box this weekend?

Alesso – ‘Heroes’

DubVision – ‘Turn It Around’

Martin Garrix & Moti – ‘Virus’

Not many people know this, but the Leicher brothers are really good at…

“Being humble.”

Where will you be on New Years Eve this year…and any idea what you’ll be spinning at midnight?

Taiwan, Taipei. Probably one of our own tracks.”

Loved the video for your collab with Feenixpawl, how much of an input did you have on the ‘Destination’ shoot and where was it filmed?

To be honest not much. We had four different scripts which were all pretty good. We chose this one because of the most emotions. Glad you liked it Dan!”

You guys hosted a fan based Google/Twitter session last week…what were some of the questions you just daren’t answer?!?

We answered all of the questions we think, to be honest nothing was too weird. A lot technical stuff so it was fun!”

What is the record that…

…reminds you of your childhood?

Micheal Jackson – ‘Bad’

…always gets you dancing?

Daft Punk – ‘Around The World’

…reminds you of having your heart broken?

Simply Red – ‘Sunrise’

…reminds you of Ibiza?

Julien Jabre – ‘Swimming Places’

…you wish you would have made?

Alesso – ‘If I Lose Myself’

ADE must seem like a distant memory now. What were some of your take home memories from the week?

“We had two amazing gigs at the Doorn Records label party and the Sexy By Nature party of Sundry and Ryan. Seeing everybody in our own town was really special.”

As an industry led event, is ADE now the most important of the year?

“If it comes down to technical stuff then definitely the best. If you want to learn as a producer, sign a track to a label or anything about the industry then this is the most important one. For the best parties we would recommend WMC in Miami though.”

Tune of the summer?

“DubVision – ‘Backlash’ (Martin Garrix Edit).”

Proudest career moment to date?

“Playing at Tomorrowland. A really amazing experience!”

Steve – you used to have your own architect company. What is your favourite building in the whole world?

“Everything designed by the Spanish architect Calatrava.”

Your worst ever job…

“Pizza delivery.”

Best DJ gig of 2014?

“Tomorrowland and Halloween in Vancouver.”

What is the last track that made you close your eyes and get goosebumps all over

“Our new track, coming out beginning of next year on Spinnin Records…”

And what else is coming out studio wise in the near future?

A couple of new originals, some very exciting collabs and a remix of a huge Swedish artist. Stay tuned DMCWORLD!”
