Dyro

‘WOLV’…the mighty new tune from one of the hottest producers on the planet today

Interview : Dan Prince

Emerging as one of the industry’s hottest new talents, Dutch breakout Dyro has dominated the electronic music scene’s limelight over the past twelve months. Swooping into DJ Mag’s Top 100 at the entry position of #30, he also claimed the feat of the youngest, highest new entry across the history of the poll. Now Dyro prepares to step out of the shadows of his peers and into the driving seat, launching his new eponymous label, the mighty ‘WOLV’…

Jordy welcome back to DMCWORLD, where on the planet are you today?

“I am currently In Ibiza, I played at the ‘I Am Hardwell’ party at Ushuaïa last night, which was rad.”

Wow. What a busy summer you are enjoying young man, let’s kick off with the biggest news of all, the launch of your new label WOLV. The track that kicks things off is of course one of your own, please talk us through the sound of ‘WOLV’ which is out this week…

“Sure, it’s not going to shock anyone, I’m not trying to reinvent my style so my fans have nothing to worry about. I just wanted an outlet of my own to release music on. I am still going to release via Revealed Recordings and would never turn my back on that, as we are one big family. Still its nice to have a side project I have creative control over, I like being involved in all aspects of the creative process, from creating the music through to the design work.”

What are the next plans for the label…have you an eye on some producers you want to sign?

“There is a pool of talent that I really want to bring though who are doing some incredible things at the moment. I don’t want to give too much away right now, but we have some exciting things in the pipeline!”

It’s that time again, the DJ Mag Top100 !! Last year you claimed the feat of the youngest, highest new entry across the history of the poll zooming in at No. 30. In this magazine last week we interviewed legendary NY producer Arthur Baker who claimed that…”there are too many DJs and genres for a realistic competition, it should be split”. What are your thoughts on that idea?

“Yeah I don’t know really, As its voted for entirely by the fans then I feel that it gives them an opportunity to support the artists that have been really feeling that year. It is not a vote for their favorite genre but their favorite DJs overall, and for the scene is a good indicator as to what has been particularly popular scene that year.”

I have been writing about music for over 2 decades and I can honestly say I have never, ever, ever seen fans greet a DJ at an airport with homemade banners. You must have felt like you were The Beatles when you landed in Budapest??

“Yeah that was so crazy. It’s never happened to me before…I don’t imagine it will happen again any time soon. But it is something that I enjoyed; it was a really nice touch by those guys and appreciated!

What are the big 5 records in your box right now?

Dyro – Wolv

Dyro & Dannic – Radical

Dyro – Sounds Like

Kill The Noise , Skrillex – Recess (Milo & Otis Remix)

Revolvr – Quantum

How important for you as an artist is it to not overload us with too much music?

“It is not so much about the quantity, more the quality control aspect. I would never release anything, which I am not 100% on. As such I may not have a similar level output as other artists, but what I have released I would revisit in a year, 5 years or even 10 years time and still be proud of and that is really important to me.”

We were on the dancefloor at Ibiza Calling @ Space in Ibiza last week, sick show man. How you enjoying Ibiza this summer?

“Yeah it’s been brilliant to get to play out here regularly is awesome. It’s the spiritual home of dance music, so every show I have played out there has had a different kind of energy, especially playing Ushuaïa which takes place during the day.”

Last week some superstar DJs including Paul Oakenfold, Afrojack and Steve Angello announced that “Ibiza is too expensive” and that the “mystique of Ibiza isn’t there anymore”. Do you agree?

“I don’t think so, but then I have been coming here for the last two years. So maybe it is but I don’t have a long enough history with the place to be in a position to make a comparison.”

We are LOVING your Dyro’s Diaries…we are a little worried about the amount of McDonalds you eat though!!!

“Haha, well you and my mum have something in common, she worries about what I eat when on the road as well!”

These fly on the wall documentaries give your fans a real insight into a superstar’s life. It’s not as easy as just spinning records and making music huh?

“There is a lot more than just playing shows and hanging out with Hardwell and Dannic, that’s for sure. It’s a great series and I love being able to give my fans that amount of in-site into what’s going on behind the scenes. I think it’s important to let fans know your personality a bit more rather than just watching me play behind the decks.”

Your dad looks a cool dude; does he come to your gigs?

“Haha, yeah I took him, my mum and sister to Tomorrowland this year, they were so impressed, it was nice to show them that side of my work after them spending so many years hearing me making beats in my bedroom.”

Best festival moment of 2014?

“Tomorrowland was amazing, really its unreal, it’s the biggest festival in the world and then energy there is a different level.”

Not many people know this, but Dyro is REALLY good at?

“Well asides from music, I studied design for a number of years before music took over, so that I guess?!”

And finally…what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“Well I just released my latest single Wolv, up next I’m working on the follow up for my label Wolv, I’m working on some remixes as well and a new original track for Revealed Recordings. I’m testing them out right now on festivals and club gigs.”
