‘Changes’ – one of the biggest records of the year and being played absolutely everywhere

Interview : Dan Prince

Maxime, Camille welcome to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you right now?

“Hey Dan, we’re actually in Geneva for the promotion of the new C-class Mercedes – and by the way it’s another world for us.”

Well guys who would have though it? One night there you are lazing around in Maxime’s basement watching videos when you hear a snippet of music that caught your attention, the next you have a record that is hitting the top of the charts everywhere and is being hailed as THE record of Miami 214. Crazy huh?

“Yes that’s so sick! We didn’t expect that much success, we’re very proud of it and very surprised also. It’s really incredible how the internet makes things happening so fast and especially for music sharing! This is a special adventure that we will remember for the rest of our lives.”

For those not knowing the background of ‘Changes’, the snippet we are talking about is the children’s choir singing on the Pnau hit ‘Baby’…all the way from Sydney in Australia. What was it about those melodies that made you think of turning it into a dancefloor throbber?

“We just heard Pnau ‘Baby’ on the internet and as we just wanted to put in our music production didn’t already think about making it as a dancefloor throbber. This vocal was perfect because it was fitted exactly with the piano chords that we did at first, then the saxophone came all by itself in a very natural way. ‘Changes’ is a mix between deep-house and pop music that what makes the track special we think!”

When I told the Buzz Chart office I was interviewing you today they shouted “we love that record, it’s instant happiness and perfect for THAT magic moment in a club”…you must have had so much fun playing this out in your sets…

“Yeah it’s true, people go crazy when we play ‘Changes’ in the clubs, even if we are in some techno/house clubs that usually don’t play that kind of song, we have so many good reactions from the crowd and it’s a real pleasure. We feel like people can gather on this song, it’s kind of a happiness anthem.”

What is the story behind the record, what was Pnau’s reaction to you contacting them and who did the vocals on this beauty?

“Things came really easily in a natural way, we just produced ‘Changes’ and we tried our luck by sending it to Pnau and they liked it a lot. From this moment everything went crazy.
But to be honest, we don’t know the name of each children haha…but they made a really cool job!”

Okay let’s kick back for a moment. You met at school and started to make music in your study time. Who were the artists you were both into back then?

“Actually we were into this French Touch vibe that was on top these days like the Ed Banger records with Dj Medhi, Justice, Busy P, Mr Oizo – but we were really open-minded so we listened all kind of music.”

Was this just a hobby back then or was the idea of a career in music already formulating in your heads?

“Of course we began producing as a hobby, you can never be sure that you will have a career with it! We were studying, making music besides, and kept our dreams in mind.”

What did your families think of your choice of career?

“Actually they are so surprised from the quick success of ‘Changes’ and they support us 100%, they are very proud and now love deep house and keep stealing our playlists haha!”

We loved the video for ‘Changes’, looked a whole lot of fun. Who was behind it and did you manage to get any of the toilet roll guns?

“The video clip was made by our label Four Music and the company Easy Does It. We had to make something really quickly because of the release, so they submitted this scenario with the toilet paper guns and the game between the boys and girls, we thought it was pretty cool so we told them we were ok with it! They did an amazing job, much love to those guys! And sometimes in a club some of the nice promoters out there have built their owns TP Guns haha and shoot the crowd with it. Toilet paper is our confetti!!”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning…

Theophilus London – Wine and Chocolate (Andhim rmx)

The xx – Cristalized (Edu Imbernon rmx)

Joachim Pastor – Wayfaring (aka aka rmx)

     Tube & Berger – Lovebreak

     Rodriguez Jr. – Satellites

     Naxxos – New Orleans

Nora en pure – Come With Me

Claptone feat. Jaw – No Eyes

     Joris Delacroix – Maeva

Klangkarussel – Keep It Coming

You have an obvious love of deep and tech house, who are some of the producers you are giving high fives to right now?

“We loooove some of the big German artists like Tube & Berger, Andhim, Super Flu and Pleasurekraft. But also Rodriguez JR, Joris Delacroix, Robin Schulz, Klangtheraputhen and many others…”

Camile…you versus Killa Kela in a beatboxing championship. Who would win?

“I would definitly win! Haha no I’m kidding, he would kick my ass very hard I guess.”

I was reading in an interview you guys did last year and you said that the success of ‘Changes’ hasn’t changed you, you still pay the same price for your baguettes! You must have bought one piece of new studio equipment as a gift to yourselves though?

“Yeah, we bought some stuff like audio devices and a lot of plugins and VST, this is enough for us at the moment.”

Away from dance music, who are some of the artists you are listening to right now?

“We really like Lord – Royal, also Kendrick Lamar, Grammatik, C2C, Birdy Nam Nam and lot of hip hop artists from Grand Master Flash to ASAP Rocky!”

Camile – what is your preferred weapon. A Spiny or a Koopa Shell?

“Man, Spiny is just so unfair, I will say Koopa Shell!”

Couple of big gigs you’ve been on recently. How was Russia on Valentines Day, very romantic…

Faul: “Haha yeah it was really awesome to be there for Valentine’s Day, my girlfriend was a bit jealous of Camile because we spend so much time together, she say that he’s my second wife!”

And Dublin – the friendliest city in the world! Did you participate in a few pints of the dark stuff?

“Yeah we tried but we thought that it looks like petrol and tasted like kikoman soy sauce haha! Nevertheless it remains effective for good parties.”

Tell us about your studio set up…

“We can say that we started with a very minimal set up, we are part of this new generation of ‘bedroom producer’ with only a computer and headphones and also a keyboard, but now we have few more things that help us like monitoring speakers, audio card and very good plugins.”

Who excels in the studio, who is good at what…?

“We can say that Camile is good for making strong coffee to stay awake all night long and I’m good for powernaps! Haha just kiddin! To be honest we don’t really have particular tasks but maybe he’s better for percussions and I’m more into the melodic stuff.”

If you could throw away one record from each other’s collection, what would it be?

“For me, I would definitely throw away his Redman CDs because I’m so sick of it, every time we go in his car it’s always the same CD which is running over and over. And for me (Wad Ad) it would be, not a Music CD but a videogame : FIFA !!! He’s addicted to that game and I just hate it!”

And finally, what is coming out next from you guys studio wise?

“So we are working on several projects, another featuring both of us and one solo song from each of us but we can’t say more about it we want to keep the surprise.”

Thank you! Appreciate your time guys…

“Thank you very much for this interview and we have to say that it’s good to have an unusual interview like this one sometimes. Very original ! Take care Princey, Camile & Maxime.”
