Fear Of Dawn

One Love getting set for a summer smash – with a huge Doorly remix to boot

Interview by Joel Sumerling

Fear of Dawn is the name two Australian musicians/DJs gave themselves after countless nights of partying and fearing the night was coming to an end! Mark Olsen and Kaiser Waldon don’t just produce music and DJ, these guys live and breathe electronic music. They run some of Sydney’s leading nightlife events including Saturdays at Hugos Lounge and Escape events – which has seen them play alongside international House legends such as Disclosure, Dusky, NiCe7, Nick Warren, Jody Weisternoff, Audiojack and Huxley. Their new single ‘Alright’ featuring Boswell hit # 2 on the Aria Chart in Australia and is now ready to hit the rest of the world with more music to come over the summer…

G’day gents. Welcome to DMCWORLD – where are you today, you cool?

Slightly hung over but otherwise really good!

‘Alright’ has been a massive success in Australia you must be looking forward to it being pushed out Worldwide?

Yes, we are!!! It’s really exciting to see how it will go..

The single features the vocals of Boswell. How did the collaboration come about?

Boswell is a good friend of ours, and based on the idea we had for the song we knew his vocal range would be perfect. His voice is amazing, and recently when we played at a festival he sung it live over the instrumental and it sounded like the recording.

Have you guys been working with more guest vocalists?

That’s a good question…yes we have lots of things in the pipe line, the next follow up single features Boswell again, and we have recently finished 3 singles featuring Defected’s Nat Conway also we have a track featuring Garry Nesta Pine, who was the voice behind Bon Sinclair’s summer anthem ‘Love Generation’ and ‘World Hold On’. I think that’s all we are allowed to reveal at this stage.

How would you describe your current sound?

It’s a tricky one as we have such a wide range of taste…the best way to describe our current sound is probably a mixture of soulful vocal house summery records mixed with syncopated and funky bassline driven club records.

How long have your been producing. Who has influenced your sound?

Mark – I have been producing for over 10yrs in various different projects and genres.  I have always been a big fan of funky basslines so that definitely comes out in our music, so James Brown and P-Funk etc. are definitely artists who have influenced me.

Kaiser – I’m new to the game in terms of the production, once we agree on an idea, traditionally mark would be in the driver seat when we are writing a track. I only really started getting serious into production side about a year ago…and now I’m hooked!

What Top 5 tunes are you currently smashing your dancefloors?

It’s hard to pick since we play 4-5 hour sets every week…but if someone held a gun to our head these are the ones that we would probably yell out in a frantic panic! just 5,

Sonny Fodera, Cervendos, Lauren Faith – High

Doorly – Its Got Me

Denney – Low Frequency

Format:B – Chunky

Gregory Porter – Liquid Spirit (Claptone Remix)

What track do wish you had made?

Kaiser : Faithless – We Come 1

Mark:  Hot Natured – Benediction.  Such a feel-good Summer classic!

We hear you guys have been busy remixing. Who you been twiddling the knobs for recently?

Our DJ S.K.T – Take Me Away remix just dropped and its currently sitting at no.3 in the Australian Aria Club Charts which we are stoked about! We also recently did 2 remixes for Dim Mak, one for Swanky Tunes and another for the artist Both called Straight Outta Line There’s a remix for Tom Budin which is about to drop and we are making the final touches to a remix we did for Husky which we are really vibing!

What’s in store for Fear of Dawn for the rest of 2015?

It could be quite an exciting year in terms of 2015…One Love have some big plans for us and they have been really supportive, We have some collabs in progress with some rather big International names which we really excited to see where it all goes…we have a record coming out in a couple of weeks on Sonny Fodera’s label Beatdown Music which is a collab with our home boy in Italy Da Lukas…As well as our Alright Follow up record with Boswell called If You Only Knew to come out towards the end of Summer around late August…

Finally, back to yours after a huge FoD night out, standard right?! What does your Back to Mine soundtrack sound like?

Kaiser – I do this every weekend after our sets so this is an easy one…it’s usually Ame – Howling and Lovebirds feat Stee Downes – Want You In My Soul I kinda get away with both until someone else takes charge….

Mark – I usually put on our latest mixtape in our Podomatic series…they are the current tunes we are vibing on at the moment, so its always a winner!
