Filterheadz

The legends get set for the 24 hour Trade Birthday extravaganza. Here we go

Interview : Nicky Trax

So…Trade’s 24th Birthday on October 25th at Egg London, you’ve been here before right?

“Ha yes, this will be our second gig for Trade as we headlined the Trade Room at Summer Rites in July. Playing there was an absolute blast so we are very much looking forward to the Trade 24 party at Egg.”

What can the Trade crowd expect from your set?

“We have several new tracks to showcase including our new ‘Alive EP’, a big techno roller out on Bitten plus there’s also a new 2014 version of our ‘Los Hijos Del Sol’ classic plus several other new tracks and remixes. The welcoming at the last Trade party was really great, and also the Egg crew have always been wonderful to us. I’m sure the crowd will be up for it so we are very much looking forward to seeing everyone again!”

How does playing in the UK compare to other countries?

“We’ve always loved playing in the UK, especially at Egg which has been like a second home for us in the UK. Every gig there has been just fantastic. A great crowd always enhances the performance, it inspires us to try out new things.”

How does it feel to have been working in music for 15 years and behind some of the biggest dance anthems of the last 10 years?

“We feel that we are blessed in being able to do this. It’s not the easiest job to always come up with new material but we wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world.”

What are your proudest moments to date?

“The first ever gig we did as Filterheadz was in Colombia. Being so far from home to make our stage debut in front of such a wild and crazy crowd was quite special. Our annual gig at Ageha, Tokyo is always a magical experience too.”

What’s coming up for you in the next few months release wise…?

“We are currently working on new releases for Toolroom, Bitten & MB Elektronics as well tracks as our own label Loopglow.”

When were you first infected by dance?

“Popular hit parade Eurodance was never our thing so it took us a while to discover the wonderful underground sounds of Daft Punk, Masters at Work, DJ Sneak, Armand Van Helden. Seeing Underworld in concert in the late 90’s also made a big impression on us.”

What was your first break in the industry?

“Our first big break was our ‘Struggle for Pleasure’ Remix for Minimalistix. The fact that Sasha played it even twice during his sets surely helped to get our name out.”

What is your earliest musical memory?

“The earliest memory is singing all day while playing with our toys. As we grew up in a musical family we were always surrounded by instruments. So we picked up guitar and drums at an early age.”

Who are some of the people you have enjoyed working with in the music business?

“In our early days we were fortunate to work with the great crew at Headroom Music: Housetrap, Zzino, TDR, Tomaz & Marco Bailey. Being part of such a strong local movement gave us a great start in the music business. These days we are very happy to work with the talented team at Blueprint Artists, our booking agency.”

What’s the driving force behind your music?

“The love for rhythm, melody and harmony. Great music has the magic ability to move people, lift moods and make you happy. That is exactly what we aim for in our own music and DJ sets. The Filterheadz style is a colourful mix of all the influences we have absorbed over the years combined with a solid foundation of big techno beats.”

Throughout your phenomenal music journey what has been your biggest challenge?

“The biggest challenge is that we have always loved and produced many different styles of dance: Sasha & Digweed early progressive, 90’s French house, tribal techno, indie dance like Justice & Boys Noize and loads more. These days we try to fuse all these elements instead of making tracks in different genres.”

Who is the most inspirational and influential person in your life and why?

“Being brothers we are probably most influential on each other. We love to share our musical discoveries and be influenced and motivated to push the boundaries of our sound.”

So after over 10 years, what does the future hold for you?

“Music is not only a form of art, it’s also a craft. Every day we work to build our craftsmanship. We feel that we are still learning and growing and that our best music is yet to come.”
