Florian Kruse

A legend on the electronic music scene taking us to the sky

Interview by Dan Prince

Hi Florian, welcome to DMCWORLD – where on planet earth are you today?

Hey there DMC! I am in Berlin.

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed?

I was listening to the arrangement I worked on the day before in the studio. I was curious if it still sounded good to me – luckily it does.

You have had The Buzz Chart office jumping through loops these past couple of weeks thanks to another one of your storming productions, this time round it’s all down to ‘Skylines’ that is doing the damage…please talk us through the history and sound of the track that features Hendrik Burkhard…

Oh thank you for your kind words. I want to touch people with my music, glad I did. I saw the chart and was very happy to be part of it with Skylines. The history of the sound of the track is actually quite long. I wanted to make everything right and changed the arrangement and the elements over and over again. I can’t even count the versions of this track I have on my hard drives. The intention was to create a track with different levels to reach a certain depth and which (hopefully) last a bit longer than just another bouncy club track. Skylines features Hendrik who is an old friend of mine, he is an amazing musician, not only a great singer and his vocals take the track to another level.

You are one of the few DJs that takes some time out in the summer to recharge your batteries. You disappear to Sweden and fuck around up trees. Why is this annual jaunt so important to you?

Sweden is like my second home. I have travelled to the same house every single year for 29 years (I was 3 years old when my parents took me on vacation for the very first time there). I think this little annual break in Sweden brings back my energy, I can breathe clear air, I stop thinking about bullshit immidiately and I just relax.

Another special trip you had this summer albeit for completely different reasons, was your DJ gig at Canvas in Amman, Jordan. You got upgraded, met some new friends…but what was the city and DJ experience/crowd like?

That was a special experience for me. Jordan is probably not the safest place on earth right now with all the neighbour countries like Syria or Iraq for example. That’s why I was slightly frightened to be honest, but I was also curious as to what was going to happen at the party. As soon as I landed all my fears were gone when Hasan (the promoter of the night) welcomed me and it felt like I had known this guy for ages. The crowd (no tourists) were very nice young people, knowing the music pretty well and I totally enjoyed playing. Amman is a nice city with warm-hearted people.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend?

Martin Eyerer – Run! (Rejected)

Massive melodic tune with a lot of drive.

Smash TV – Todesstern (HIVE Audio)

Bold production, killing modular synth line!

Andre Hommen – Bottom Line (Objektvity)

Guess thats my favorite track atm even if its not the newest.

Breach – Anna Love (Aus Music)

Epic anthem

Matthias Tanzmann – No Sleep (Saved)

It’s about groove and funk!

What is the last GREAT studio toy you bought yourself?

My last great studio toy is the Roland TR-8 which I am really enjoying.

When was the last time your wife told you that you spend too much time on your couch?

That NEVER happens! She is more like I should spend more time on the couch and relax!

An up and coming producer we should look out for in 2016?

Raphael Hofman is a very talented young producer from Berlin. Check out his No Word No Sound release on Save Room Recordings and you’ll know what I mean.

Your favourite festival experience of the summer?

I enjoyed Sonar in Barcelona this year a lot. Jackmaster and Gerd Janson back2back at El Monastereo was just epic.

Over the years you have produced with some incredible producers and brought us so many amazing tunes. Who do you always enjoy bumping into at festivals from this list, who does it always get a little crazy with?

One of those guys I always meet on festivals / open airs all over the world (we never collaborated so far but this is something on my list) is RAXON. He is trouble in a good way when it comes to partying…

Your biggest tune of the summer?

Freakme – Cornelius (NiCe7 Remix)

How difficult/easy is it to say “no, I am not going out tonight” in Berlin? The temptation is always there…

The first thing Chopstick from Suol told me when I moved to Berlin was: you need to learn to say NO!’ There are just way too many opportunities but I am not the crazy party animal and I can easily go and listen to a set without being smashed the day after.

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

Next on the list is a release on Hamburgs JEUDI records. It’s the follow up feature with Hendrik Burkhard called Broken Mirror’.
