Ibiza 2012 Part 1 (A-C)

Starring superstars Alfredo, Brandon Block, Christian Smith, Crazibiza…

Alfredo

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle in 1976?

“That it was a magic place where freedom and love where all around.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“It was Glorys, that closed down a long time ago, and probably DJing was a French DJ called Jean Claude.”

How can you describe the atmosphere of Ku and Amnesia back then?

“Cosmopolitan, both but more laid back at Amnesia than Ku. Both full of happy people.”

What are the main differences from Ibiza in the 70s and Ibiza in 2012?

“It is another world and the differences are so big. Imagine an island with less people, no mobile phones, promoters, big massive sound systems, no video, no electricity in most of the houses, not many hotels, no Marina, no Space, no big roads, no massive parties, a place that everybody knew each other, and where famous people live as anonymously as us chaps. If you can imagine this and much more, you are going to have some idea.”

Do you miss those early days?

“Sometimes, but you have to live with the times, everything changes and some of the changes are good!!!”

Who are some of the biggest celebrities you have DJ’d to?

“Grace Jones, Prince Albert of Monaco, Freddy Mercury, The Clash, so many, but most of the time I only found out after when some of my colleges in the club told me. Most of the time these people just went to have a good time and never bothered to show up at the clubs.”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“I’m resident at We Love every Sunday at Space, twice a month at Pikes Hotel together with my son Jaime as part of our new project Heritagedjs (The Heritage Project: heritagedjs.com), the 123 Festival in San Antonio, a monthly Thursday at Grial (now called Santo Grial), a weekly residency at The Boutique Hostal Salinas and other places not yet confirmed…”

What one track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“Many that I have already and many more that I`m sure are going to come up during the summer. One that I currently like is Rootz 10, a white label with a Rolling Stones sample…that I love!”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“‘The Promised Land’ by Joe Smooth – one of many.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Obviously a expensive, don`t you think!”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Bars: Locura and Shardana. Beahces: Salinas and Punta Galera. Also there are so many little “calas” – wonderful places!!!”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“Both for so many people.”

What is the best club in Ibiza today?

“The three best clubs are Space, Pacha and DC10

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“No idea, probably some island in south east Asia or some beach on the south of Brazil.”

Your son caught the DJ bug early…how is he…?

“He has been DJing since 1997, he is a great professional with a fine taste in music. He is also producing, promoting some parties and as I mentioned before, we have a project together – The Heritage Project. I think its much more than a bug Dan!!!!!”

Acid Invaders

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“Each time we get off the plane in Ibiza it makes us think about the Cashmere aka Green Velvet song, ” La la land”. The island is all about music, big fun and of course sky and sand. Hope this year’s parties will be as huge as before…

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“I remember it like it was yesterday. As we went into Space, Timo Maas was on the decks and the party ended at noon and it was  40° C outside. Extremely amazing.”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“This Summer Acid Invaders will be touring around Europe with gigs in Germany, UK and The Netherlands, and who knows, hopefully, Ibiza.”

What one track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“There is that one track which is getting so big and is one of the new summer anthems – the Magician Remix of Sam Sparro’s ‘Happiness. It has a great sound and is very catchy.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“Definitely Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State of Consciousness’ which remains a pure energy moment. Another track is ‘Italian Fireflies’ by Blackstrobe.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Definitely yes. We believe it’s time to rethink door prices. You can’t charge that while half of the young spanish people are without a job.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“It might sound cliché, but Playa D’en Bossa is still our favourite one as the music is played 24/7, and you don’t have to drive there!”

What is the best club in Ibiza?

“They are all very different and it’s too difficult to say. Every club has its own day in the week where you have to go to and I’ve had great times at  Space, Privilege, Pacha and Amnesia.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“For us London is number one as it’s all year round.”

The debut Acid Invaders album featuring “Change” and “Rave On Kids” is out now on Introduce Records. For more info check out  http://www.acidinvaders.co.uk

Amber D

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“I thought to myself….I’m going to LOVE it here.  That was 8 years ago, and I have played here every single year since.  I love it so much.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“The first club I went to was Es Paradis, as I was playing along with the Tidy Boys, Anne Savage and a few others.  A great way to start your Ibizan DJ career I must say!”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“In Ibiza I shall be appearing at a few different places.  You can catch me playing under my Amber D guise (Hard Dance) at the Ibiza Boot Camp from 9 – 12 June headlining events at V Vodka Bar, West End and Zoo.  Under my Amber D’Amour guise, playing everything from Tech and Deep House to Electro House, you can catch me in back room of Eden as part of Record Label / DJ Threesome DirtybyDesign, as well as Viva, and also Play 2 for Ultra Violet and also headlining a Catamaran party for Driftwood on 11th June.  I am also lucky enough to be touring with DirtybyDesign over to Croatia for Eddie Halliwell’s “Fire It Up” tour, for which we are residents for this year.  And I’m sure I shall be popping up at other destinations over the summer!”

What one track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“That would be impossible to say as I play so many different genres.  I will be looking forward to playing so many good new tunes this year.  The crap english weather has obviously kept us producers in making music instead of being out in the sunshine!  Loads of amazing tracks out right now.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“Stonebridge – ‘Put Em High Feat Therese.’

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Just a bit!  We’re in a recession… do people really want the dance scene to implode?  Partly the faults of big agencies asking ridiculous fee’s for artists, but that’s a whole other rant!”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Bora Bora.”

What is the best club in Ibiza?

“I do love Amnesia, but possibly Es Paradis or Eden just purely for the memories.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“Miami!  Oh my god…I loved it this year.  I am already booked up to DJ for the next one. I can’t wait.”

Anonymous story you would like to tell?

“Last year in Ibiza, some guy upset me pretty badly…So I walked half a mile to a shop, bought a jar of bolognese sauce, brought it back, and threw it all over him.”

Amy Thomson

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?
“It just felt like it kept secrets. The scene was so hidden then. You would drive past families on a beach and then walk onto Space terrace…it was sheer magic…”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“Wierdly the first time I ever went was an event I was putting on…it was Ministry of Sound on Fridays, Strictly Rhythm with Louis Vega / Ultra Nate and Barbara Tucker in the main room and Bentley Rhythm Ace in the back room.”

Why is Ibiza so magical?

“Well you can track hedonism back to the Roman ages….many believe it has a magnetic force which draws you in and when you land..its just how you switch off. The Spanish way of life is so calm….you relax by association.”

How has Ibiza changed since you first went?

“Well of course now it’s a huge business.  It scares me actually. Granted I work on a lot of big projects but the amount of inexperienced big business men throwing money at it will only mean one thing…..they will lose money….and then slag off the scene. I remember this boom the last time around!!”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“Stardust ‘Music Sounds Better With You’.  It was an epidemic…it was infectious…it was genuine…. long live Daft Punk…I hope they come back and save us all!”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Yes because I don’t think any of the venues actually back that up with killer service / drinks / treatment.  People will pay for sure…but the age of paying based on the name on the flyer should be long gone.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“El Chiringuito. The best clams in Ibiza.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“Both!  An honour to watch Danny and Tong and co. help people voice their opinions. I won an award there last year and it meant the world to me that someone noticed what I’d been working on…I think it’s a wonderful event…sadly now being copied. People need to learn the more you open this the more you’ll kill it…but so many people are just running to the top now…and you know the only place to go from there right?”

What is the best club and club night in Ibiza right now?

“Mmm…well I love Cadenza. I love the simplicity. And Lio….dinner and dancing…I’m getting old ! “
What are your thoughts on the pop live artists invasion of Ibiza?

“I think its bollocks.  We did Kylie and Dizzee unannounced at Pacha.  It was about scene’s fusing and electricity just filled the room.  That’s acid house. Booking Diddy or rent-a-hollywood star is another example of why we’re all killing what we started.  These are clubs…not concerts. Lets stop filming and start dancing.  Let’s dance facing each other and not the stage.  Lets groove again. Let’s listen again…”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“Vegas.  You could argue that’s number 1 now to be honest and you need to give credit to Jason and Noah at Marquee how they changed the game there.”

What one track are you looking forward to hearing there this Summer?

“Miike Snow…the whole album for before the club, after the club…and all the remixes in between on the dancefloor. Long live the album!!”

”

Pacha. Missing Space Terrazza though. Ushuaia is cool with those Vagabundos fiestas too.

Haven’t been there yet but heard good things about Brazil and South America. LA and Vegas are tons of fun too.

Andi Durrant

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“I was 18 and more excited than you could possibly imagine. Growing up the 90s I’d spent my youth reading Mixmag, Muzik and DJ and hearing all about Ibiza so finally getting to go and experience it myself was incredible. It’s a horrible cliché but I really did fall in love the island from day one.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“I was working as a radio producer and we were out doing a week of broadcasts from Ibiza. My first job was to go to Amnesia and record the main room for the night. I remember Dave Seaman was on last and as it got to 7am and the light started flooding through the roof of the club he finished his set with “Chase The Sun” by Planet Funk. I remember thinking wow.. I’d love to be that side of the DJ booth in a few years time…”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“I’m going to be the resident and host for the new Ibiza Live parties at Eden every Tuesday.  We think it’s going to be something pretty different and exciting for the island – some of the biggest A List music stars performing live alongside DJs with an eclectic genre-bending music policy and a proper party atmosphere. We’ve got everyone from Example, Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah, to Rizzle Kicks, DJ Fresh, Rev Run, Professor Green, Wretch 32 and Labrinth.. and last week we announced Jessie J will be stopping be in July to play her only summer club date.”

What one track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“There’s way too much amazing music around at the moment to pick one out – and the biggest track will probably be something I’ve not even heard.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“Hard to choose, but I could narrow it down to a handful. In 2008 and 2009 we spent a couple of years warming up for Tiesto at Privilege every week and he always used to play the Axwell & Dirty South remix of Temper Trap “Sweet Disposition” after we’d finished and it still brings a smile to my face.  The other would be Y Traxx “Mystery Land” – a track I grew up with when I was starting to DJ as a spotty teenager and that we had the pleasure of finishing the night with at Cream at Amnesia a few years ago. Proper hairs on the neck stuff. Chillout has always been a big part of Ibiza for me too.. Chicane’s “No Ordinary Morning” is always something myself and Nick play if we’re doing a sunset session and “Josephine” by Chris Rea is a Balearic classic that always makes my mind wander back to Café Mambo.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Yes. Absolutely. When a single drink can add 15 Euros on top of a door price that’s already more expensive than most arena-sized concerts it’s gone too far.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“There’s plenty of hip places to drink and be seen at in Ibiza, but for me there’s nothing better than heading up to a little bed & breakfast place called La Torre – perched up on the cliffs in Cap Negret with a group of mates. It’s really quite, family run and has one of the best sunset views on the island – best enjoyed with a cold beer and some bread and olives. As for beaches the nearby “secret cove” at Cala Gracionetta is pretty awesome.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“I’ve not had chance to go yet so I couldn’t say. By the looks of it though, it does seem pretty good for business.”

What is the best club in Ibiza?

“They’re all brilliant for different reasons. When Privilege is full there’s no other spectacle like it.. as a DJ playing in the main room at Amnesia with those megatron ice cannons and that massive rack of amps behind you is very special, and Eden always has one of the best atmospheres.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“All eyes seem to be on America at the moment with Las Vegas and Los Angeles being the new clubbing capitals, but the scene is stronger than ever around the world. We’ve had some really good gigs in Finland over the last 6 months – they party hard and seem to really know their music.”

Anonymous story you would like to tell?

“No need for anonymity – if you’re looking for debauchery my partner in crime Nick Riley managed to get thrown out of Privilege on our opening night for Tiesto and Electrik Playground in 2008. He had one Jaegerbomb too many and managed to fall into the club owner of the club spilling champagne all over his table of distinguished guests and generally destroying the VIP area. The next morning he was being sick on the plane into the little clear plastic bags you have to keep your toiletries in. Nice.”

Andy Carroll

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“This will be year 21 for me and I still get a buzz looking out at the Island as the plane comes in to land. The best way to describe my first impression is to say I was like a kid at Christmas time.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“Kaos with K-Klass live and me on the decks with el residents.”

Why is Ibiza so magical?

“It’s a compact bubble where you can never know what’s around the corner, when spontaneity kicks in properly it’s the best place to be in the world.”

How has Ibiza changed since you first went?

“Some for better other changes for worse, nowhere is the same as it was 20 years ago. You either adapt or you can simply stop going.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“This is a very difficult question to answer as after all these years there are so many great tunes.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Prices rise all the time and if you want to listen to the big names in the best clubs you can choose if you want to pay for it or not. There’s always a party to be found where you’ll find a few lesser or not
known DJs and will get quality music for a fraction of that door tax.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“My fave beach bar has to be Sa Trinxa when Jonathan is playing. Not telling my secret beach spot. One of my favourites bars is Lo Cura in Ibiza town.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“It’s always good to work and play hard.”

What is the best venue in Ibiza ?

“There are so many great venues that are very well publicised in Eivissa. But one that is more under the radar is The Underground @ San Rafael.”

What has been the maddest most surreal night you have ever survived?

special.”

Andy Daniels

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“My first club was Ku (now Privilege). I could not tell you who was playing (nobody really cared in those days) but whoever it was played Royal House  “Can U Party” and it changed my life forever.”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“I will be playing for Hed Kandi @ Es Paradis.”

What one track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“K Klass & Triple Dee ft Duke – So In Love – it’s our latest colab and a bit of a cheeky bootleg the feedback has been immense cant wait to drop it over there.

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“Sueno Latino – ‘Sueno Latino’.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Of course!!!! 50 euros is too expensive, 80 is just taking liberties.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Blue Marlin has the best food and cocktails hands down. Cala Salada beach is lovely, nice and quiet great to get away from it all for an afternoon.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“A bit of both, you have to balance things out right?”

What is the best club in Ibiza?

Space, although i have to be a little biased and say our parties at Es Paradis have been quite special.

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“I really can’t decide. South America is probably where it’s at now, but the parties in Lebanon, Dubai, Philippines, Croatia and  Holland are always incredible.”

Anna Wall

“I don’t want to sound cheesy (too late) but my heart did actually skip a little beat as I got off the plane…”

“I think the invasion of pop live artists is inevitable, it happened years ago with Bob Marley, Sting etc. and seeing now that all pop artists are having dance producers making their tunes for them, they’ll
have to perform them. Ibiza Rocks is fantastic, and a real breakthrough for the island, as far as doing big concerts I think it’s a great idea, it’a not a private little place anymore.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Favourite bar would have to be both Savanah’s and Mambo’s for the only reason, the sunset. They also have some great pre-parties where you get a taste of what’s to come later that night. My favourite beach well, there’s too many nice ones to choose, in England all we get is pebbles.”

I then walked forward to the edge of the balcony overlooking the pool and the stage and the rest of the club and thought “fuck me” this place is massive.”

Which DJ epitomises Ibiza for you?

“I’m going to have to say Jason Bye. He has been a DJ that I remember going to see on the terrace at Space and at Mambos  when I first got there. And his house music sets are just so different to what you would hear back home, not your usual tracks but ones that get you straight away. And believe it or not, he is still there now. He must be at least 55.”

What took you to Ibiza to work?

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Sadly, the club owners have been taking the piss out of the clubbers for a long time already. If they would charge normal prices, like 10-20 euros, the clubbers could go out to many parties and enjoy the variety on offer. But now, they are contrained to going out once or twice during their holiday. Also, drink prices of 15 euros don’t help either. I am happy however that some smaller, more alternative club nights have popped up that charge normal prices. Ibiza is not just about the obvious super star DJs, but the vibe of the island.”
