Is Ibiza too VIP nowadays, has it lost it’s magic?

Ibiza definitely hasn’t lost its magic, not for us anyway. There’s lots of everything here, you can go get involved in the so called ‘VIP’ side of things if you want to but on the flip side there’s lost of great parties such as Wax Da Jam, The Zoo Project or Fuse where those sort of things don’t even come into the equation. It just depends on what you want to experience

It is fast becoming like that unfortunately. We miss the old glory days when Ibiza was more of a hippie thing, with real music lovers and party animals dancing on the dancefloors till the sunrise, rather than arrogant VIP sitting next to their tables with champagne and Smart Phones in their hands shooting stupid movies in search of some likes on their Facebook

I think Ibiza is what you make of it. It can be the most VIP experience or it can be the most underground and grimy. VIP has always been a part of Ibiza and it always will, as long as neither side in a venue is causing effecting the others enjoyment live and let live

Is Ibiza too VIP nowadays, has it lost it’s magic?

Yes it’s losing some magic. I will never turn my back on the island, but it’s pricing itself out the market and without the full eco-system being respected and allowed to continue to flourish, we will lose the young end of the market. No young end = no future. So Ibiza club owners need to back down from their position of power, reduce prices and make Ibiza clubbing more affordable to all. If the promoters then want to blame the price of the DJs, then fine. Get round a table with the agents and discuss what to do. I never believed the Croatia hype, but now I more than believe it, I feel it. I see it. It’s happening. No…actually it’s happened. Ibiza now has a genuine rival. It may not have the history or the historic venues, but the new generation don’t care about the past. They live in the now. And right now they ARE VOTING WITH THEIR FEET. And I now feel compelled to share my summer with another resort and join them

Ibiza has not lost it’s magic no way, go to any night be it Carl Cox, We Love, Circo Loco, Music On or Ants…these parties and many more still have line-ups, energy and atmosphere that you won’t get anywhere else in the world. Love it or hate it, the island’s clubs and beach bars are just catering for all people who come – and yes there are more VIPs,  but when you are in any of the clubs do you really notice them? For me personally I have been loving ‘Weiss – I Can’t Stop’, I think it’s featured for me regularly this summer, there are bigger tunes out there but they don’t need the press. Everything Weiss does is cool, I’d love to do a track with him one day

Club night of the summer

For me I loved ‘Ibiza Rocks House @ Pacha’ every Monday, they took the club back to fun, good music and some interesting flamboyant ideas (laser butt plug is one of them)…

Is Ibiza too VIP nowadays, has it lost it’s magic?

It’s a strange one. If you want to keep to the VIP then you can but there is still lots more going on than VIP (I try to keep away from that, lots of false people isn’t really my bag), you still have clubs like Ibiza Underground keeping it real. This Summer has been a bit strange as I think it was affected by the World Cup. It still has it’s Ibiza appeal but since you have the likes of Croatia becoming more popular because its not as expensive…it will be interesting to see what the future brings

Your favourite memory of Ibiza 2014

Meeting the love of my life, soppy I know but totally unexpected. It’s been a great journey this summer, one I will remember for a long time. I’ll squeeze another one in too, whatsapp’ing with Louie Vega was a bit surreal and then DJing the music in the background of an interview for a the Club Culture live from Mambo radio show on BFBS – we were both on (hoping I didn’t f**k up my mix haha). Has to be Watermat – ‘Bullit’. I’ve been doing the closing set every Saturday at Pacha and I finished my set with it on the first show back in May and it’s been my closing tune ever since…it leaves everyone leaving on a good vibe!

Club night of the summer

For me it has to be Pure Pacha because I had the honor and pleasure of playing every single week as resident. It was my dream club to play so it’s been an incredible experience playing alongside the likes of legends such as Kenny Dope & Louie Vega as well as DJs such as Kaskade, Oliver Heldens, Madeon, Don Diablo, Martin Solveig and Bob Sinclar. We’ve been very lucky to have a packed club every single week this summer and I’m already excited for next year!

Is Ibiza too VIP nowadays, has it lost it’s magic?

I don’t believe it’s lost its magic at all. The mystique and hedonistic values of the islands are still intact but maybe people don’t know what they’re looking for or are exploring the wrong places. I think the accusation has come to light simply because people worldwide are embracing electronic music more than ever on a commercial level which means big business and money to be made. This is reflected in the demand for VIP and the demand for a bigger ‘show’, so venues are delivering what people want which is being perceived as what Ibiza is about. For people who look at this negatively could say dance music is a victim of its own success but I certainly think it’s positive…the more people who love our music, the better

Your favourite memory of Ibiza 2014

So many to choose from including the incredible sunsets at Café Mambo! But, I think I’m going to say BBC Radio 1 weekend. It’s personally a special time for me simply because it holds so many amazing memories for me over the last four years. Not only that, it signals the height of the season and the amount of people that attended the parties proves that it is THE weekend to be at

The record you heard just too often

That has to be Oliver $ & Jimi Jules – ‘Pushing On’. I’m glad I heard it too often, it’s a great record and deserves to be played loud everywhere. I heard it in shops, take aways and taxis all over the island, not just in the clubs…it’s one of the tunes of the summer!

Your DJ of the summer

I think that can be nobody other than MK! This last 12 months has seen not just a resurgence of his career DJ wise but the demand for him has been like a tsunami of house goodness and he’s definitely riding the wave high…he’s everywhere and people love him and his music so every credit!

Tribal Sessions at Sankeys Ibiza for sure

Is Ibiza too VIP nowadays, has it lost it’s magic?

Well there are lots of clubs going down that route, but I just stay away from all that nonsense. The last two summers I spent a lot of time backstage at one of the big clubs here in ibiza. Then back in May I thought to myself dude, you stand back there, you can’t hear the music, you are by some stinky bins, it’s full of mosquitos eating you alive plus loads of people looking miserable and moody with a cod face because they have done too much coke…DO NOT waste your time there this summer. I can hand on heart say I have not once gone there, nor any other club VIP room, if I’m going out I’m gonna go out to hear the music and enjoy myself. I’m happy to say that Sankeys Ibiza who I work for don’t even have a VIP area…

Your favourite memory of Ibiza 2014

Well if it’s club related, it has to be finishing a Tribal Sessions set and playing ‘Devotion’ by Nomad and then club owner David Vincent getting up by the decks, stage diving and crowd surfing. Was such a great night and friendly atmosphere. If it’s none club related, it has to be being around the pool at my villa one morning and seeing loads and loads of people who I have never met turning up. They had been at Tribal Session and I had invited them all back…and all of them were getting on and having a great time. House music can bring people together,  I love this about what I do as much as the music

Hahah I can’t say because the guy who made it is a good friend of mine…and his career is taking off and it’s great to see. But I can’t hear that track anymore! Hahaha!! Your DJ of the summer

Well I’ve seen so many amazing performances this summer;  MR G (Live) at Tribal Sessions, Len Faki, Marcel Fenglar, Shlomi Aber, Sidney Charles have all done memorable sets for me. But I honestly, hand on heart, have to say one DJ that never gets any praise or mention in the press but is constantly great, KNOWS how to read a crowd and is a joy to play with, is Hector Couto. Some artists have press and PR behind them, but some have raw talent and no press and that carries them through. Hector Couto is a prime example

It is more expensive than ever before – 20€ a drink at the Hard Rock, 12€ for a bottle of water at Destino made me nearly swallow my tongue – and for sure, if you go to the clubs that cater to the mad VIP clientele then that is what you will find. Still, there are many places that aren’t run like that (albeit the smaller or more underground clubs and bars) and that’s generally where you’ll find me. Cream Ibiza! Still going strong after 20 years on the island. I really do love that club night, so much history and it’s always an honour to play there

Is Ibiza too VIP nowadays, has it lost it’s magic?

I really think it depends on where you go. There are places on the island that specifically cater for that kind of crowd, like Ocean Beach for example. But if you really want a dirty rave it’s never that difficult to find. I think most clubs are offering VIP services now but they tend to be kept up top away from the dance floor, where the real party is

Club night of the summer

The club night that went off for me was Together at Amnesia on a Tuesday – great atmosphere and great line ups every week

I think it is starting to go that way, the prices on drinks in clubs are way too much and more of ‘that’ kind of clubbing experience is offered to you more throughout the day. I don’t think it is loosing its magic but I can understand why people would think that it has changed. It is still a unreal place to be….

Impossible for me to choose one as I have been fortunate enough to play for many. Cocoon @ Amnesia, Together @ Amnesia, Carl Cox @ Space, we-love…@ Space and the mighty Paradise at DC10 have all been next level business

Is Ibiza too VIP nowadays, has it lost it’s magic?

I think the VIP thing is a load of nonsense to be honest. Not what I’m into at all but I don’t think the magic has left the island. I’ve been coming here every year since 1997/98 and I love it as much now as I did back then. The island is evolving for sure (some for the better, some for the worse) but I will still be in Amnesia at the Closing Party at about 10pm when it opened at 11pm the night before, more than likely off my knackers. If that isn’t magical, I’m not sure what is!

Your favourite memory of the summer

What just pips it for me is when I played at Carl Cox @ Space. I stayed at his villa and was treated amazingly for starters. My set went down incredibly well and then I got to step back and watch Carl do his thing for 5 hours. It’s something I have watched probably 100 times before but he only gets better. He is the king of kings, a fucking hero and one of the nicest geezers you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting. I’m living dreams left, right and centre at the moment

The record you heard just too often

I didn’t really hear anything too often as I was playing at a range of nights with a cross section of music. I will say that if I never hear another Deep House (speed garage in disguise!) record again, I wouldn’t be too upset!

DJ of the summer

Obviously it has to the original and massively best, Mr Carl Cox. He just gets better and better. Special mentions go to Maceo Plex too because he is uber talented in not just production but as a fine, fine DJ as well. He is also a great guy to boot. Also big ups to Richy Ahmed – top lad, top DJ, wicked tunes and an animal!!!!

The tune of summer

Patrick Topping – Forget: This track is truly a hit

Club night of the summer

I loved going to the ANTS party at Ushuaia this year. With a remarkable lineup at such an impressive venue, this party was massive

Is Ibiza too VIP nowadays, has it lost its magic?

I don’t think Ibiza has lost it’s magic. But yes, it has definitely become more VIP and commercialized over the years. It’s not as easy to explore and discover new music when venues are charging an arm and a leg in entry fees. But to me, despite these changes, it’s still magical in countless ways and remains to be the dream island for music-lovers around the world

Your favourite memory of Ibiza 2014

A friend took me to this random event in San Antonio at Kiosk. It turned out to be Richie Hawtin’s ENTER pre-party. His set was amazing and the crowd was going crazy. I ended up having the best afternoon of my summer. It was just another reminder that the best experiences in Ibiza are often unplanned

The record heard too often

An amazing track from last year, Ninetoes – Finder, which is one of my favorites. I was definitely guilty of playing it often

DJ of the summer

Marco Carola was amazing, as per usual. He creates a unique energy that is unparalleled, representing one of the best in underground music
