Jordan Suckley

Huge triple album from the guys who put the balls into trance

Interview : Dan Prince

It began in Manchester, swiftly infected the north of England’s system and now, 14 years since those first blocks got rocked, it’s a electronic music name near-instant to the lips of any fast-lane-loving club kid. Advisory: Goodgreef puts the capital ‘T’ into ‘tough’, the Kick into ‘Kick Drum’ and the balls into trance!

Now, with a squad of their most trusted DJ master-blasters ready to turn the speaker cables a fierce shade of white, Goodgreef are straight-up stoked to deliver a mix-comp that’s gonna put summer 2014 into overdrive. Stepping up for the occasion, Messrs. Jordan Suckley, Craig Connelly & Photographer have clubbed together a 3-disc-strong mix-collection, featuring some of the toughest, most deadly current and upcoming trance music available to man, beast or DJ. DMCWORLD gets the world exclusive with the mighty man Suckley…

Hey Jordan welcome back to DMCWORLD, where on planet dance are you today?

“Hi Dan, I have just got back from a weekend playing at Exchange in LA and Slide in San Francisco!

A huge new Goodgreef ‘Future Trance’ album is about to explode, served up yourself, Craig Connelly and Photographer. You have brought us 19 storming tunes including three of your own productions, talk us through the mix and the tunes that JUST HAD to be in there this summer…

I was sent some exclusives from my DJ friends, searched through a massive list of promos and made one track especially for the compilation called “Jordan Suckley – Contaminated”. Also I have a lot of love for “John O’Callaghan – One Special Particle”, I had to include that beast!”

Goodgreef began in Manchester some 14 years ago, when did you first become aware of this British establishment?

“I went to see Eddie Halliwell play at the Ascension in 2003 I think it was, and ever since then I was hooked on their events!”

Whilst the likes of Passion, Sundissential and Slinky have fallen by the wayside, Goodgreef continues to fly the flag for a fierce night on the dancefloor. Why has it lasted the test of time?

“Because they have always kept their music policy fresh and have a great team running the events!”

What 1 song always reminds you of Goodgreef?

“Dejure – ‘Sanctuary’.”

A recent quote from a certain superstar DJ…“I believe true DJing is actually an art, but it’s a dying art, as everyone is pushing the sync button…it’s a real shame when you see a ‘DJ’ plug his laptop in and call this DJing. Music will always evolve but sometimes not in the best way.” What are your thoughts on that?

“I dont really worry too much about how other people DJ really, I just focus on myself and try to make sure I play an interesting set for people to enjoy! There are definitely fewer DJ’s who add scratching & FX to their sets these days, but its more interested the music anyway.”

You have been on the white isle a couple of times already this season, starring at the all new Gatecrasher and their Monday nighter. Gatecrasher’s fans were in uproar when they saw the club abandoning trance for house this season, thankfully sense prevailed and Crasher was introduced. How have the nights been, that’s some sound system eh?

“The club looks amazing and I have had great fun at the last few gigs, it’s definitely worth checking out if you go to Ibiza this summer!”

True or False : The reason you decided to become a DJ was decided after you watched the ‘Kevin & Perry Go Large’ Ibiza film…?

“Haha! True.”

What 1 song will always remind you of Ibiza?

“System F – Out Of The Blue.”

A new set of remixes of ‘HELP’ is out this week, talk us through these reworks and the artists behind them…

“We went with a Tech Trance remix from Xgenic, and Uplifting remix from Daniel Skyver & Techno remix from future Disciple! I am a fan of these 3 producers so it was great to have them on board for the remix on my label Damaged!”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning…

“In no particular order..

Jordan Suckley – Contaminated (orig mix) Damaged

Jordan Suckley – Elation (orig mix) CDR

Paul Oakenfold – Ibiza (Jordan Suckley remix)

Three Drives – Sunset on Ibiza (Atkinson remix)

Standerwick – Valyrian (Original Mix)

Sneijder & Bryan Kearney – Next Level (orig mix)

Idina Menzel – Let It Go [Armin van Buuren Remix])

Solis & Truby – Scorch (orig mix)

Darkboy – Atkinsane (Mark Sherry remix)

John Askew – Plush (orig mix)

A quote from Faithless’s Sister Bliss this week…”I think people will become bored with the stock crude generic sounds of EDM and the artists themselves may be somewhat musically bankrupt (David Guetta even admitted as such in a recent interview) as there is only so much touring you can do before it impacts on studio time and having space to think creatively.” Thoughts on that?

“Well it’s inevitable if one sound keeps getting rinsed over & over again that it will become saturated, which is what’s happening with some of the cheesy EDM! I think having issues producing when touring a lot is definitely something I am having to get used to at the moment as my weeks are being cut down with traveling and having mid week gigs etc! It takes a day or so to recover from a busy weekend and before you know it, you have to hit the road again! I’m not complaining as I love what I do, but its more about finding balance and putting time aside now to produce when I am not too tired etc. because you can’t force creativity!”

What is the record that…

…reminds you of your childhood?

“The Prodigy – Fire Starter.”

…always get you dancing?

“Just Techno in general!”

…reminds you of being broken hearted?

“No broken heart so no track for this one sorry.”

…you wish you would have made?

“Simon Patterson- Us (orig mix).”

In your opinion, is it possible for someone to make it as a DJ in 2014, without any production behind them?

“No I don’t think it’s possible anymore, it’s all about the music combined with being able to DJ well!”

Who is the last GREAT young DJ/producer you have spotted around the world?

“Sam Jones & Will Rees are both great DJs and producers from Wales!”

You always state that you love playing a wide variety of musical sets, from warm up sets of chunky progressive house all the way through to peak time trance extravaganzas. But, what type of dance music could you never play on the ones and twos…

“Justin Bieber classics…”

Away from dance music, who are some of the artists you are into at the moment?

“I don’t really listen to anything other than dance music really but I do like London Grammar, Disclosure and Duke Dumont.”

Not many people know this, but Jordan Suckley is really good at…

“Hiding Simon Patterson’s things so he thinks that he is losing the plot.”

The most embarrassing record in your collection at home?

“Scatman John- I’m A Scatman.”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“Remixes for Paul Oakenfold, Gareth Emery, Giuseppe Ottaviani, 4 new originals and collabs with Paul van Dyk and Simon Patterson.”
