Jordy Dazz

Always ready for the main stage, the superstar enters the Vortex

Interview : Dan Prince

Jordy welcome back to DMCWORLD dude! Well you have done it again, got the planet dancing thanks to your music…this time round it’s the mighty ‘Vortex’ produced with Jimi Frew from Australia. Loved the debut on Hardwell’s show…talk us through the sound and history of the track…

“Thanks Dan! ‘Vortex’ is a very unique track to me, as the way how it came together is unlike anything I’ve done before. I met Jimi Frew online through a track I heard of him in a Tommy Trash Podcast. We connected and quickly had the idea to do a collab. The whole story about this is online right now, as we shot some footage about Frew and me meeting for the first time.”

Nice little World Cup Holland Samba top you are sporting their Jordy on Facebook. Your team is doing very well, can you win it?

“We can always win it! I’m not a huge sports-fan, but I love the World Cup. I try to follow it as much as possible. The Dutch team is (again) very strong, and I really believe if they keep their minds straight we can win the thing again finally. It’s great to see how everybody in our little country is involved. Streets are turning orange, Dutch flags everywhere, and everyone feels as one around the World Cup. It’s a big impulse for the economy as well! I watched the Holland v Mexico game backstage at Summer Festival with Showtek Music, Nicky Romero, Bassjackers, Oliver Heldens, Thomas Newson, Kill the Buzz, The Partysquad, TV Noise and a hell of a lot more! Check the winning goal here…”

How has the Ibiza season started for you?

“It started great! My first gig was at the Revealed Party at Ushuaia last week, which was my debut over there. It was also my first time visiting the place, and I fully understand what the buzz is all about. The crowd, location, atmosphere and crew were absolutely brilliant. I’ll be back in Ibiza a few more times later this summer, doing some shows together with Showtek. Can’t wait!”

There is obviously a huge split at the moment, half the DJs claiming Las Vegas is numero uno, the rest still see Ibiza as the best party place on the planet. What does Ibiza mean to you…that was some wedding location by the way!!!!

“Ibiza is a very special place. My first gig in Ibiza was a few years ago in the Privilege with Tiesto, which was both nerve wrecking and mind-blowing at the same time! Ever since I was a little Jordy, I’ve read and heard great stories about the white isle, and I guess a lot of them are true. As soon as you land on the island, the overall vibe is different than any other place. My buddy / tourmanager just got married over there a few weeks back, and we were all invited to join the happy couple on their special day. They rented a huge villa in Jésus where all our friends stayed, with a view to die for. I didn’t had time to check out the island before, but gladly found some time to do so now. Besides the party-minded people and nightlife, it has a lot of amazing spots, beaches and restaurants to check out.”

A big quote from Faithless’s Sister Bliss last week in an interview in DMCWORLD…” For some, the goldrush for EDM in the US could be seen as progressive – as it uplifts our industry as a whole, it’s an entry point into dance music, so that genres like techno and deep house and the proponents of those more underground scenes start to get a look in as it creates a space where EDM fans can start to dig a little deeper.” What are your thoughts on that?

“Yeah, I think it’s a great thing more “styles” than just bigroom / EDM are getting noticed. For me personally, living in Holland, it’s nothing new. I used to work in a recordstore more than 10 years ago, and already back then there were multiple genres and layers of dance music. From House to Tribal, Tech-Trance to Progressive (read: Global Underground), Hardcore and Hardstyle, Techno & Schranz. I just fell in love with the more electronic form of music in general, and eventually decided to take and focus on the road I’ve entered 2,5 years ago. I still listen to all sorts of dance-music, and I truly hope everyone that loves this type of music will decide to broaden their eyes and ears, if they haven’t done so already. You’ll be amazed!”

You have some very dedicated fans out there. You must have some who travel a loooong way to see you?

“Indeed, and I think you’re pointing to my facebook post the other day. This disabled girl in a wheelchair, travelled over 5 hours by bus (!!) to see me play in Germany. Those things are unreal to me, and will never become normal. That is true dedication, and absolutely fuels me to continue what I’m doing even more so.”

We were in the crowd at The Ministry of Sound in London a few weeks back – the best sound system in the world?

“The world is a big place, but MoS definitely has one of the most advanced and iconic sound systems on this planet, yes. I can’t stress enough how important a good sound system is for a club. Producers spend hours, days, weeks on perfecting music in the studio, with advanced monitor speakers, just to make sure every little detail sounds right. And you’ll definitely hear the difference if you’re in a club with a sick soundsystem!”

What is the 1 festival you are looking forward to this summer the most?

“Creamfields, XO Festival, DanceValley, Summer Festival…oh sorry, you said one?!!”

Most goosebums you have ever had at a festival?

“That probably was a few months ago in Turkey at Magic Break Festival. I guess that was my best gig so far, as I never felt so much energy from a crowd. Everyone was in a happy and good mood, and ready to go full force on partying. As soon as I started my intro and grabbed the mic, the room exploded, and it lasted till the very last second. Amazing!”

“A DJ has to have a piss every time before he goes on the decks, and if somebody tells me that’s not nerves they are full of shit.” – that was from an interview in the magazine last week. So, do you still get nervous before DJing?

“Not at every gig, but there’s always a decent amount of adrenaline in my blood right before I go on stage. It’s the best feeling, and gets me focussed. And yes, I always take a leak before going on stage as well. Nothing is worse than having to take a piss 10 minutes into your set, and then hold it for 1,5 hours.”

What is the record that…

…always reminds you of your childhood?

“All Phil Collins / Genesis.”

…reminds you of having your heart broken?

“Jewel – Foolish Games (as far as I can remember!).”

…will ALWAYS gets you dancing?

“A little Michael Jackson will get my groove on.”

…you wish you had made yourself?

“Justin Timberlake – ‘What Goes Around…Comes Around’ or Calvin Harris – ‘We Found Love3’.”

“I believe true DJing is actually an art, but it’s a dying art, as everyone is pushing the sync button…it’s a real shame when you see a ‘DJ’ plug his laptop in and call this DJing. Music will always evolve but sometimes not in the best way.” What are your thoughts on that?

“I’m 100% with the guy / girl who said that. I’ve been DJing since I was 15, and it’s definitely not only pressing a play. You want the crowd to have a good time, so it’s my job to give them what they want. However, I always stay in between lines I set myself. The music I play has to fit in a certain range I represent. And of course those lines change eventually over time. My interests change and I get inspired by music made from a certain perspective. You can hear the difference between music simply made for banging the crowd, or music coming from someone’s soul. If someone nails those two things into one, it’s a homerun. And that’s exactly what I always try to achieve myself.”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise…?

“As you may have noticed, there’s another collab coming up on Revealed Recordings soon, with Polish guy Fafaq called “Jumbo”. It’s featured exclusively on Hardwell’s new Revealed compilation album which is out now, and will have a full release later this summer. Besides that I’m working on a lot of new music; solo-releases and collabs. I’m already testing out some of them in my sets, and fine-tuning them as we speak.”
