Kydus

One of the UK’s most exciting producers right now

Interview by Iam Fleming

Kydus has positioned himself at the cutting edge of today’s rapidly evolving House and Techno scene. A forward thinking dancefloor sound, tracks with an unstoppable groove element, sometimes raw, always with an unquenchable energy. We check in…

How did you first become involved in electronic music? Is music something that has always been a part of your life or was it a late discovery?

Music has always been part of my life Ian and I have always had a passion for clubbing, Growing up in the city of Liverpool with such iconic night clubs such as Cream, Chibuku and Club 051 – plus events like Circus…well, it would be hard not to embrace and want to be involved in the scene.

How would you describe your sound in three words?

Chunky. Groovy. Consistent .

In the past you have worked alongside such artists as SecondCity and Yousef, can we expect any more collaborative projects for release in the near future?

Sure i have a new EP coming with SecondCity in the summer and myself and Yousef are planning the follow up to Jupiter Rising as soon as I am home as I am living in Ibiza for the summer.

Do you find it an easy process working with someone else in the studio or can it be testing at times?

I am pretty open minded in the studio, when I first went in with SecondCity in London I was amazed how well we actually worked together. We are so alike when it comes to what we want it was really easy and enjoyable, I had the same experience with Yousef – we have the same taste in music and are both Cubase heads so its easy working together.

You have recently released your take on Eric Prydz’s huge track ‘Generate’, how did this remix opportunity come around and can we expect anything more surrounding its release?

My management got approached from Eric’s camp/label, and asked if I would be interested in remixing Generate for them, little did they know that I am a huge Prydz fan and have been for the past 15 years. To get asked to remix an Eric Prydz track for any up and coming producers is something we only dream about and the fact now its happened and is in demand is something I am really proud of.

Do you find remixing an easy process now? What has been your favourite track to get your hands on so far?

I wouldn’t say its an easy process, I tend to just do my own thing with it. A remix is a remix Armand Van Helden will tell you that, I have just recently remixed a track by a London act called Felons ‘isla’ for Sony UK where I only used a small part of the vocal and built a solid Kydus groove to compliment it, this is dropping in a few weeks and has yet to be aired so listen out as its sounding rather cool.

Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided that producing/Djing electronic music was what you were meant to do?

For personal reasons my track ‘Free Spirit’ from last year meant so much to me and I know it touched so many hearts back home in Liverpool. The feeling I get from playing my own productions in a club or at a festival is just amazing, I feel this is what I was put on this planet to do & from a young age I’ve always wanted to be a DJ.

What one piece of studio equipment would you say defines your sound as an artist?

Cubase. Simple, I cannot live without it.

Apart from your collaborative releases what can we expect to hear from you and only you? Any EPs/Albums in the pipeline?

I am currently working on my first artist album for Circus Recordings and have various solo EPs coming throughout the summer including a rework of Free Spirit which will feature the amazingly talented Angel on vocals.

Where can we expect to see you play over the summer, you head to Ibiza for Do Not Sleep this weekend what are you most looking forward to about the gig?

I have based myself in Ibiza for the whole summer and have dates @ Cafe Mambo, Carl Cox Float Your Boat, Cream Float Your Boat and Do Not Sleep, alongside my Friday night residency @Sankeys. Do Not Sleep is going to be incredible I’ve never played at Vista Club so to be asked to play with Darius, Sante and Sidney is awesome.
