Egg London gets set for take off. One of the stars of 2014 ready to rumble

Interview by Rob Chadwick

A big welcome to DMCWORLD at Christmas…how has your year been, what have been the highs and lows?

“Hi Rob! Well it was definitely the best year of my career. So many highs like the residency for Music On in Ibiza, Cocoricò residency, festivals such as Sonus, Electric Zoo, Kappa, ADE and WMC. There were two tours in North America and one in South America, and then also Ushuaia and DC10. I literally didn’t have any low moments. It was a year of growth, lots of work and many sacrifices for me, but an incredibly fantastic and exciting year.”

How have you evolved and how have your tastes changed since you first started producing?

My development has been slow musically I would say. I was born as an artist very underground but tracks like ‘Body Monster’ or like ‘This Like That’ made me known and therefore less dark. Right now I’m back to producing something underground and techno. I need it and I’m finishing the album. Every year music changes so it depends whether you want to follow the trend or stick to what you know, haha. A lot of artists will change their style in order to increase their chances of getting gigs, and will follow the trend, but for me it is better to create a new style that then becomes trendy.”

How hard has it been to stay on top and to stay in people’s minds since breaking through?

I think that you always remain in people’s minds when you are a good DJ. If you’re always playing good, exciting sets, then people will speak well of you and it’s hard if you’re a good DJ to fall down and be forgotten.”

What aspect of normal life suffers most as a result of you being a DJ?

Airports stress me out a lot! Now I have a son and I would like to spend more time with him and my family.”

How long do you spend looking for new music each week?

I devote time to research new music at least 4-5 hours every day.”

What’s the thing you are most proud of in your career so far?

“To hear people say that I am both a humble person and also a great DJ. I have played in many clubs and been on tour with many fantastic DJs. To be on tour with Marco Carola was great, and also playing with Carl Cox too. Lately I’ve been at the home of Danny Tenaglia in New York. We spent a few hours together and it was great to speak with him about music, soul, family and the future. Danny was and still is my hero!”

You play at EGG London soon. Do you like playing in London, and do gigs there feel more vital than anywhere else?

“I like to play at Egg as every time I have enjoyed it. London is one of my favorite cities in the world. Every weekend there are lots of very interesting parties in Europe and it’s definitely one of the cities where I prefer to play.”

And what’s your relationship with EGG like. How do you like the club?

“I really like the new terrace upstairs. The sound system is amazing and it always creates a good atmosphere. In the room below it is more techno orientated and keeping the vibe going until 10 in the morning. You can get your musical journey for hours and hours and that is important for a DJ. It’s a very cool club.”

What should people expect from you on the night?

I’m playing a lot of edits I made for me and only me. I’m playing a few things off my album to be released in 2015. I will play for three hours so I will try to be as dark as possible and lots of techno stuff.”

If you could own one record that no other DJ was allowed to play, what would it be and why?

It would have to be either one of three. Either ‘Octave One’ by Blackwater, which is something of a Detroit classic. Danny Tenaglia’s ‘Music Is The Answer’, because the message is an example of spiritual things and freedom. Or ‘The Man With the Red Face’ by Laurent Garnier, as for me it is the perfect techno track.”
