Marcos in Dub

Leading the charge for Spain! Exclusive interview

Interview by Ian Fleming

Having already featured on the likes of Tenampa, Snatch, Future Allianz and Monza Ibiza, it’s no exaggeration to say that Marcos in Dub is one of Spain’s best up-and-coming producers. His is a sound that’s as diverse as it comes in the house domain, and is likely to feature dark and dubby tones as it is warm or tech-infused flavours. With his latest track forming a part of the brilliant Tenampa Essentials release, we decided to quiz him. Here’s what he had to say for himself…

What was Spain like to grow up in for electronic music?

Since I was a child I was really close to music… I played guitar and listened to lots of hip-hop. It was in the middle of the 90s when I started to get into electronic music. And yeah, Spain was great!

You’re a resident at the Goa Electronic Parties. How has that experience been for you?

When working at these kind of parties you can see big artists playing and learn and share big things with them. Playing to a crowd of nearly 10000 people in a big room that feels like a club is an awesome experience. So it’s thanks to Goa that I can approach big names in the DJ booth. Some of them are now really good friends too.

How fundamental has the experience been to you as a DJ and your progression?

Since I was a child I listened to lots of styles, lots of rhythms. All of them are the mix that I’m now playing. At first it was the breaks rhythm and now 4×4, but always with groove and mind-blowing sounds in mind.

As a DJ, what’s been your most memorable gig over the years?

All the times I’m playing at Goa… this is my home and my crowd. Aquasella Festival was awesome too – I was playing after Paco Osuna early morning with the Picos de Europa in front of me – it was unbelievable! This past weekend in Electrobeach I was playing after Ida Engberg which was also great.

You’ve played alongside some huge artists in your time. Who’s influenced you the most?

Difficult question to be honest… I’ve learned something different from each and every one.

What was the last record you bought? Do you still collect records?

I buy music weekly, but in wav or mp3 format. I try to release on vinyl, and these are just the records I play now on vinyl.

Do you remember the first record you bought? Do you still have it and play it?

The first record I bought was ‘Jump Around’ from House of Pain, and I still love this album!

And what was the first piece of music you listened to today? A good or a bad one?

Now I’m in the studio cooking hot stuff… of course it’s gooood shit!

What’s your music collection like? Many cool pieces?

You can’t imagine the amount of music I listen to every day… all the time diggin’ and trying to collect lots of good things and compile it for the weekends. A part of my collection now is in a good hard disk, yeah!

And your studio? Are there many cool pieces of equipment there too or what do you make your music on?

I play and record on my machines, my percussions, my bass guitar. For so many years this was the only thing I wanted to do… sometimes I think it’s the only thing I know how to do.

Did you have a mentor with regards to your music? Or where did you pick up most of your influences?

I’m always sharing studio recordings or the DJ booth with lots of people. Constantly learning and sharing. I learn from the people around me, all the time.

So can you tell us a bit about how you started with production and how far you’ve come since you started?

I started with a computer and plugins. Step by step I’m closer to the machines and hardware effects and pedals. All the tools I’m working for make my own sound…away from libraries and presets.

What’s your take on the Tenampa label then?

All the tunes in this compilation are great tracks and I’m really happy releasing on this awesome label!

How would you describe your DJ and production styles then?

Nice electronic body music for the dancefloor.

Can you tell us a bit about the release, how it came about and what it means to you?

It’s a PLEASURE for an artist when your music is listened to across the ocean and the best label want it for a release. That’s all there is to it!

And finally, what are the 5 tracks that you are constantly pulling out of the bag of late?

Magit Cacoon – No Compromise | Upon You
Nicola Gala – Cadence (Marcos in Dub remix) | Vibe Me
Mirko_Flower – Fee (Alex_Costa_Remix) | Pron
Marcos in Dub – Luos Onhcet | Snatch
Specialivery – Marabunta | Tessier Ashpool
