Spaceship Cocoon lands in London town…

Interview by Dan Prince

Markus a massive welcome back to DMCWORLD…where on planet earth are you today?

“Dan, I am currently in my spaceship trying to contact to another world with the language that knows no prejudice. Music!”

What was the first piece of music you heard when you rolled out of bed this morning?

“Funnily enough it was “Forever Young” from Alphaville which was playing whilst I was showering!”

Dance music has indeed taken over the world and we constantly find our beloved super DJs in the strangest locations. Last Saturday you were spinning in Tunisia of all places…I got chased by a camel there once…never forget it. How was the African adventure for you?

“That was a real adventure. My records didn’t arrived at the airport and I had a seven hour ride from Tunis to Tozeur. It was my very first time in the desert and I was really nosy, but unfortunately due to some bad weather my open air gig had to be canceled. However, I had the opportunity to visit two other indoor parties and the chance to join Mirko Loco. The atmosphere was great and the people had a lot of fun. All in all: a good trip.”

Another wonderful destination you flew to this month was Columbia. How do the South American crowds react to your music compared to say a German dancefloor?

“It’s hard to compare it to Germany because I very rarely play at such large parties as this. But in Colombia this kind of music is even more fresh and the people are totally hot on it. It reminds me a bit of the good old rave times in Germany. It was incredible!”

What is coming out from you next studio wise?

“Before the end of March my next EP will be released on Reboot’s new label – Noon Records. I am delighted that Frank has managed to get a remix by DJ Sneak.”

What are the 5 big records in your box this weekend…

Father & Sons Production – What is Love – FAS 008

For me, a very strong EP. Minimal but assertive. Ideally for the beginning of a set on a large floor or as a ‘groover’ on a smaller floor.

– S.A.M. – Delaphine – 004

An absolute groove monster with a very slight melody. For me, an absolute killer. The kick is right there where I like them.

– Funk E – Into it EP – Raum Musik

From the label-head Dorian Paic who has been an eternal companion since I have been a DJ. Funky, trippy, straight and uneven, With a brutal atmosphere. For me one of the best label’s…

– Ens Zimmermann – White Treasure E.P. – Snork Enterprises

One of my favorite records of Jens Zimmermann. I love to use it as a tool for not so assertive songs. Here, too, high quality has emerged with meagre resources.

– Terry Francis – White Whidow/Hello Darling – Laus

After all the minimal things, here is a percussive tech-house orientated track. I am a big fan of Terry Francis and I like the split between house and techno. Sounds incredibly wicked.

2014 was a huge year for Cocoon – Sven’s 50th Birthday and the 15th Anniversary of events in Ibiza. First up – what did you get Sven for his birthday??!?

“The question should be : What Sven gave all his guests that day?!! It was an incredible evening with a wonderful welcome and a very nice concert by Nils Brahms. After that, a dinner was served and the party started. Definitely one of the best events of last year.”

What makes Cocoon at Amnesia so special?

“Cocoon was one of the first agencies who always make a huge effort organizing a major party for the island without going down the commercial music route. Even if the first parties didn’t fill the whole club, Sven believed in it and demonstrated his staying power. This passion can really be felt on a Cocoon night. The selection of the DJs has been done very carefully and the line-up doesn’t depend on any hype. Cocoon @ Amnesia is still the best and the most honest party series in Ibiza.”

Lovely answer. Next up for us Brits is March 28th and Building 6 at the O2. The press release on the event says of you…“Markus has built up a unique DJing style with finesse and good vibrations at the core of what he’s about.” – would you agree?

“Yes, all that sums it up pretty well. Wherein the drive is always the crowd. Most of the energy I draw is from the people on the dancefloor.”

3 bucket list adventures you wanna do in your lifetime…

A trip around the world with an old Mercedes 300 SL

To live as a Samurai for a period of one year and learn the martial art.

In any case, two children…!!

What was the last GREAT studio toy you bought yourself…

“I am a big fan of modular systems and I recently bought the Make noise “Echophone”…a very phat controllable module.”

Okay let’s rewind for a moment. The first time Sven noticed you was at your residency at The Helium Bar in Frankfurt in 2002. Did you know he was in the building?

“After Sven’s arrival, the Helium Bar owner told me that he was here. From that moment I was very excited, because I was very young! But I seemed to impress the former booker of Cocoon who was there too.”

It was your brother who first got you interested in DJing. As a kid you loved to assemble things such as videos, photos and even lego. Does your brother feel proud at what he has helped to bring to the world of music?

“Whenever I speak to him about it, he told me that he can’t remember! I think he didn’t understand that he was the trigger of my DJ career. But I can well imagine that in secret he is proud of it but won’t admit it. Big brothers huh!”

An up and coming producer to watch out for this summer…

“Chris Tietjen comes with some new productions, which I like very much. I am glad he has taken to producing so well. So, open up your eyes on purchasing vinyl people!”

And finally, 1 DJ gig in your diary in 2015 that you just cannot wait for…

“I can’t wait to be back in London at Building Six on 28th March!”

See you there…
