The boys are back in town! Massive new ‘Hot Sake’ album going down a treat

Interview by Dan Prince

Rob, Dylan welcome back to DMCWORD guys – where on planet earth are you today?

“Hi Dan, we are on Mars!! No really, we’re on Mars!! Cheaper property than London!!”

Right have to get this question out of the way straight away. My strangest moment of the summer was walking through London’s Hyde Park in August and thinking I saw you lot skipping with a load of people? Was I off my head?

“Errrrr that was Rob not me!! Yes Rob took one for the team and unfortunately you caught him skipping with the girls. Hahaha. Lol…”

Well, it has been ten years since your last studio album but boy has it been worth the wait! ‘Hot Sake’ – 18 tracks of diverse house music that you lot are calling a “musical roller coaster ride of your life;twists and turns, ups and downs, hands in the air, even spilled drinks down your front all done with a massive smile on your face”. How long has the new long player taken to create and were there any tracks you discarded in the end? It really is a beautiful piece of music…

“Well thanks for that Dan. It has been a long time coming. Not because we weren’t writing but mainly because the time just wasn’t right for us to release another LP until now. It’s great you love it as you do. There are always tracks that don’t make it. Not because of their quality or our love for them. Mainly because they just don’t sit in context with the rest of the music. We will however be giving away lots of music that isn’t on there as part of an overall attack on people musical perception!! So keep an ear open.”

So, 18 tracks…let’s get on it! Please give us a few words on your new musical babies…

Slow Motion

“A very slow cinematic rollercoaster ride.”

Everywhere I Look ft. Earth

Lovely to work with earth who we absolutely love. She has delivered a classic vocal in our minds.”

You Need More ft. Lorraine Cato

“Our favourite singer…been working with us for years. This track scratches our itch for funk!”

Outa Luck

“Our only pure house track on the album. This is us in clubs!!”

Falling Like Dominoes ft. Andrea Wilde

“Edgy, punk fuelled bass driven drummed up indified dance music…with apt wrists of acid and charleston.”

Nothing To Say ft. Neil Arthur

“An absolute legend wants to sing on one of our records…who are we to argue? Plus he’s bloody good and the vocal is fantastic. Disco.”

Go ft. Andrea Wilde

“The second track with Andrea who has a very strong style of her own. Great vocal on this and a bit off the beaten path.”

Never Let Down ft. Tom Gray

“The original and best version of this record…by far. Great vocal delivery from Tom.”

Ah Ah Ah ft. Amrit Rahi

“A concept track with another of our oldest friends and vocal compatriot Amrit. Simply ah ah ah.”

Politics of Love ft. Stevie Smith

“Different for yes. New ground and a future style Ballad. Also great to finally work with Steve.”

Feel Alright ft. Amrit Rahi

“Old record that stands time for us, 80’s influences and a nice long self indulgent jam at the end.”

Beach ft. Our Computer

“Hi energy camp house but the concept rules. A rusty female robot stood on the beach in contemplation!!!!”

Synchronicity ft. Helen Curl

“Slightly abbaesque 80’s Balearics disco. Lovely refined vocal from Helen curl.”

So Good ft. Amrit Rahi

“So good!!! Great sounding gretcsh guitar.”

For Your Love

“One of our favourite 60’s records covered completely differently with maverick vocalist flute Hollywood.”

Written In Yours Eyes ft. Stevie Smith

“The second record with Steve and another edgy ballad delivered beautifully by himself. Nod to the Chems!”

Go Slow ft. Amber Jolene

“Blues Cajun slide guitar house…absolutely stunning vocal by Amber Jolene. Beautiful.”

Fuzzy Dream ft. Amrit Rahi

“Believe it not thus started out as a fuzzy dream. Proper funk…lots of Steely Dan influences. Our perfect ending to an album.”

The album features some wonderful collaborations. Let’s kick off with Amrit Rahi who features on four of the tracks on ‘Hot Sake’ and who here at DMC we first encountered on your ‘In The Now’ long player back in 2001. A bit of a mystery figure, what can you tell us about this wonderful songstress and your connection?

“We have known Amrit for years and years. She used to backing sing for Corinne Bailey Rae. Her family are close to both of us and we’ve always worked together as a matter of course. She’ll always be involved on LPs with us one way or another. Always a pleasure to work with her.”

It was no surprise to us at all to finally see Stevie Smith feature on the album. You guys have wanted to work together for ever and a day!! A must for ‘Hot Sake’ huh?

“Yeah he’s a lovely man and a great singer who inspired both these records to happen.”

Lovely seeing Neil Arthur from Blancmange oozing class on ‘Nothing To Say’, some Rolling Stones influences in there…the 80s have a big influence on the album…?

“Def a nod to 80’s disco and a real pleasant surprise to find Neil Arthur wanting to do it. We were blown away by his vocal and his willingness to get involved in the project.”

One of the biggest talking points is of course ‘Never Let You Down’ featuring Tom Gray. The track has had many guises, Axwell’s ‘Feel The Pressure’ for one! Or two! We think this is the best version, you obviously agree?

“Absolutely. Nuff said!!”

A singer you would love to work with in the future…

“Jocelyn Brown, Gary Numan, Paolo Nutini! The list is endless!!”

Okay bullshit aside, everyone has one. Your favourite track on the album and why? I am all over ‘So Good’ living in Ibiza and all…

“So Good for me too…Rob’s is ‘Politics of Love’ and we both absolutely love ‘Outa Luck’, ‘Falling Like Dominoes’ and ‘Fuzzy Dream’. Tomorrow it might be different!!”

What was the biggest differences of opinion you had on the album?

“I know people find it hard to believe but there really weren’t any. We just get on with it and when were both happy it’s done!!”

Whenever I interview an artist who has just released a new album they usually say one of the hardest tasks on the project was coming up with the names! Can you provide us with any of the names that were binned straight away?!?!

“Well one album title was ‘Cats and Blogs’ amongst many others but Hot Sake was years old and we went back to it.”

Let’s rewind for a moment. The album has everything from punk, disco, psychedelic funk, indie, folk, blues, house, rock and chilled vibes all over it. Talk us through your musical influences you both had growing up…

Dylan…”Beatles, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, James Brown, Muddy Waters, Police, Augustus Pablo.”

Rob…”Nelly Hooper, DJ Premier, Hank Shockley, Quincy Jones, Lee Scratch etc. etc. etc.”

What are the big 3 tunes in your DJ box this weekend…

“The rework of ‘Feels So’, Josh Wink’s new single and a new DJ Sneak white label.”

Your record of the summer 2014?

“Carl Craig’s ‘Saved’ record.”

Rumours abound regarding a special Mutiny house party? Tell us more…

“It’s in the pipeline. We are starting new parties very soon. We will release the info to you very soon Dan!”

And finally, what are the next studio plans for you guys?

“Another album and a new project for vinyl and a give away only called ‘Ginger Biscuit’!! Watch this space. Also a new Mutiny track with Roland Clarke on the way!”
