Nhan Solo

The founder of Mother Recordings bringing us that Feeling…

Interview by Ian Fleming

Tell us a bit about your upcoming release set to drop on your own imprint of Mother Recordings?

My next release is a solo project called the Feeling EP. I’m really super excited because of all the great feedback and support from artists like Tiga, Riva Starr, Groove Armada, Doorly, Crazy P that I respect and mean a lot to me. I feel quite honoured as a musician as well.

How long ago did you start producing?

I can’t really recall a specific moment, it all evolved gradually step by step. Actually I got into it from the DJ mixing side of things, using Samplitute to record my mixes and then moving on to Ableton Live. From there I worked my way into the details.

Was it something you took to with ease or has it been a long process to get to the level you’re at now?

In the beginning I considered producing music a hobby and like all things that are fun I can accomplish them with relative ease.  But to progress onto the next level one has to try out new things and hone the skills on a regular basis. I am still learning every day and love to dive into new territories – or to put it more simplistic: no pain, no gain. Hahaha.

What do you find the easiest thing about making your music – and also what is the hardest part?

I still find that the best tracks are created in a care free, easy flowing mood and over a short period of time, basically flawlessly made from one piece. If the workflow’s right, you can go deep very quickly and mold the essence of a track. On the other hand you can get stuck and to overcome the creative blocks is one of the hardest things.

If you could go back in time to when you had just started making music, what advice would you give yourself?

Never be afraid to ask for advice, preferably from a friend. It’s so much easier to learn from people than from books.

Over the years how has your studio evolved?

The current setup actually hasn’t changed a lot. I keep it simple by using a laptop, a keyboard, a bunch of software and plugins.

Are you someone who is very open to trying out new technology, or do you prefer to keep it to what is reliable and what your comfortable with?

I’m more of a straight shooter so for me it’s all about “never change a winning team”. In the end a dope track is a dope track, right – never mind if it’s digital or analog. As an artist I get my satisfaction from the reaction on the dancefloor. If the sparks fly and people celebrate the track.

Do you feel that is important to listen to music outside of all things house?

Yes, absolutely. I try to keep my eyes and ears open and to be aware of the constant changes. As a label manager it is very fascinating to observe how the music industry is changing – not only in the field of electronic music but as a whole affecting other genres such as Pop, Rock, Hip Hop and such. Personally I love to listen to radio while driving in my car.

Already you have had an impressive career in the music scene, what has been your number one highlight so far and why?

That one’s not easy to answer. Having had quite a few highlights and amazing experiences I don’t really want to rate them. So here are a few in no particular order: the founding of Mother Recordings, my singing to the Jackmode Agency or a quite recent one: travelling to Ecuador and playing at a festival to 10.000 people.

What is Mother Recordings currently doing and what do you have lined up in the future?

We are super proud of what we achieved as a team in such a short period of time. And we aim to maintain the level of quality and fun while producing and releasing our music…and we’re definitely not just another digital label. We continue to put out vinyl, even if it’s just to please the dinosaurs, hahaha…After releasing my “Feeling EP” in August there will be releases from some of our core artists Martin Waslewski, Dilby, Mat.Joe und Kevin Knapp. Let us surprise you.

Are there any upcoming artists out there that you have your eyes on and would tip to do big things in the coming year?

Martin Waslewski, Dilby and Superlover – these guys are super cool dudes and massively talented producers, full support!
