Nick Warren

Going all Back To Mine with the Broadbents at Pikes in Ibiza next Sunday

Interview by Dan Prince

Nick a massive welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

Hi Dan – lovely to hear from you. I am in the highlands of Scotland with some friends salmon fishing.

Oh how absolutely lovely. The first piece of music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed and sorting out your tackle?

Bon Iver “Holocene”

So then young man, an absolutely mouth watering party at Ibiza Rocks House @ Pikes next week with the infamous Broadbents taking care of us all. I understand you will be spinning an alternative Back To Mine set on the day, amazing news. It must have been fun trawling through your collection for the party…what can we expect from you on June 14th?

I can’t wait to be honest, it is rare for me to play the more eclectic side of my music collection, I will play some lovely Sunday afternoon vibes with a scattering of 70’s psychedelic and the occasional guilty pleasure.

You were one of the forefathers of the greatest DJ mix album series ever – Back To Mine. In our own words, “a phenomenal album without a banging track in sight where Nick Warren drops ambient tunes, breakbeats, dubby French disco and Italian porno soundtracks.”  So who were the artists that you grew up listening to that shaped your musical direction…?

Jean Michel Jarre, America,Yellow Magic Orchestra, Kraftwerk, Bowie and Emerald Web were all big in the Warren household.

Cast your mind back, can you recall the first ever time you ventured to Ibiza…the clubs, the DJs you witnessed, the records that would have been on your radar…

The first time I went was in the early nineties with Sasha, we were booked by Jose Padilla to play at one of his Moondance events, I won’t bore you with the “it was a life changing event” but it was very a special time.

Mark and Sarah Broadbent have been pivotal to the Sunday scene in Ibiza for years thanks to their We Love…night at Space with Darren Hughes. Sundays in Ibiza have always rocked, right? Especially with this dastardly duo in control…

I have known them all for a very long time, early days of Cream. They are great people and sailed the We Love…ship with style throughout the Space era. It is going to be so much fun to see them again. I had some extraordinary times in that club, Especially when Space was just the terrace in the daytime.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend…

Way Out West “Tuesday Maybe”
The new WOW album is almost done and this is in my opinion one of the highlights, coming some time later this year.

Noir “Explode” Olivier Giacomotto Remix
Another amazing Progressive house vocal  (Oops sorry i mean Deep House 😉 ) from the every consistent Noir

9Eekoo & Flowers and Sea Creatures “4th Bell”
I like the current trend of Shoegaze House, angst young men singing on house music.

Acid Rockers & George Thompson “We Called You”
Mysterious bootleg that is smashing it everywhere this year.

Nick Warren & Guy Mantzur “Sad Robot Ambient Remix”

A mix Guy and I have done and forthcoming on Bedrock this summer, a very Jon Hopkins influenced piece, and rather lovely.

You have a real love affair for South America, in our opinion outside Ibiza, there are no better clubbers when it comes to losing the plot. What do you love about the countries down there?

Argentina in particular has an incredible club crowd. They know how to dance, no jumping up and down with their hands in the air, just hip swinging groovy people with style.

Alongside Sasha, Diggers and Oaky, you were at the forefront of the Brit invasion trying to conquer North America in the early 90s. Fuck me Nick that took some time didn’t it? Did you ever really envisage that the dancefloor foundations you were laying would ever explode like it has in 2015. They are mad for it!

It has gone thought the roof hasn’t it! Which in itself has spawned some frankly questionable music, but the underground scene is incredibly good now and I seem to be going there a lot in 2015.

The best 3 club nights you’ve rocked this year…

Twilo, Cream, Pacha Buenos Aires, Womb – I know that’s 4 but I have to mention them all.

If I hadn’t have become a DJ I would have probably become a…

A terrible Bore !

The last GREAT live gig you went to?

Kid Wave, a great artist on Heavenly Records!

You have been traveling the glove for over 5 decades. Have you ever lost the love for it?

I still love every single moment of it, so many places and people and joy every second.

A film you love seeing over and over?

Shawshank Redemption, nuff said!

3 bucket list advents you wanna do in your lifetime?

Fish the rivers of Kola Peninsular, Take my Mrs Petra to Petra. Make a parachute jump.

The last amazing up and coming DJ you heard?

An Egyptian guy called Baher, very very talented  guy.

The best day or night you have ever had in Ibiza…

A boat trip to Formentera and Es Vedra with a bunch of friends followed by a dance round the pool back at the villa.

And finally. I used to party with you at The Thekla in Bristol. You were always the last man standing. Unbelievable stamina – and always that lovely smile on your face! Can we expect more of the same at Pikes in a couple of weeks…are we gonna rock it?

9I will be there with bells on, I take things a little easier these days but the smile will certainly be there. Lovely to talk to you Dan!
